Title: Turbo help needed!!
Post by: Jono FD3 on March 13, 2005, 02:24:05 PM
Just got my new toy: Standard 1993 FD3 :cool
But as I\'m new to this Twin Turbo thing I\'m lost!!!

The car runs fine, no missfire, hesitations, etc. but for some reason the second Turbo seems to be intermitant   I took it for a spin the other day and decided to give it a little squirt, and it picked up nicely, 0.4bar ish. went round a roundabout and did the same again 0.4 bar and then the second blower kicked in 0.8bar ish and everything went blury :D Felt like a differant car!

The car has been stood for a few months and the previous owner was a fairy and didn\'t know the turbos were ther, so could it be down to lack of use and componants freeing up, or could it be terminal:confused: :reallymad

Thanks for the help,
Jono

Hi Jono, not sure what you mean by blury:confused: . Are you saying the second turbo is not kicking in. When\'s the last time it was serviced or even looked at by a Rotary expert. Could be a problem with pipes coming loose or even coming off. They come with abit of a rats nest around the turbo\'s.
Try having a look yourself if you are confident enough, could be worth a look. If your still not sure take it along too a Rotary expert in your area, they maybe able too help you out....good luck with the turbos Jono cheers Leigh.

If you feel you are a confident mechanic try this.

What I ment by going blury is, the second turbo kicked in and it took of like a rocket! could it be the actuator freeing up now its actualy getting used?
Cheers for the help guys,

Sounds like the second turbo working properly to me??? When it comes on with WOT, then you will move very quickly. Have you run a boost test, using a boost gauge?

Forgot to add.

Be careful when running a boost test. In 3rd gear at Wide open throttle you could max out at 100MPH, which would of course be slightly over the speed limit. Also it helps if someone else is looking at the gauge when you do it.

Boost pressure is about 0.4bar on the first Turbo and about 0.8bar WHEN the second kicks in!!
And yea I agree with the test in third being a little over the speed limit so I tried in other gears just to be sure the test was done properly ;)
Could it just be a system freeing up?

Sounds like it\'s the first turbo that\'s the problem here...

Any strange noises? Might have a vac leak in the first part of the circuit!

second turbo will not come on line properly unless primary one has achieved sufficient boost.

Cheers for the help & sujestions people, but I think I\'ve sorted it!

I was looking around the intercooler and found that the jubilee clips were loose on the top hose. looks like the previous owner has had the intercooler out to do something & hasn\'t put it back properly!!

Does this sound like the sorce of my problems?
Havent driven it since I titend things up!

Cheers,

Hey Jono,

It does sound like the intermittent problem could be caused by the intercooler hoses.  A more common problem is the actuators, solenoids and vacuum hoses getting old, sticking and persishing.

You should see 0.8 bar on the 1st and second turbos with a slight drop in between as the 2nd one comes on line.

As mentioned earlier, if the primary turbo isn\'t making enough boost the 2nd will never get spooled up (due to the way the vacuum hoses trigger it).

If the i/c pipes aren;t the problem then the easy solution is to take it for a trip to a specialist as it\'ll save you a lot of time!
