Title: Will an Interooler work well in this position???
Post by: antnicuk on March 10, 2005, 10:37:22 PM
I am just starting my new project and have bought a monster intercooler.    I was wondering what your opinions are on fitting it flat in the bottom of the engine bay, at right angles with the bottom of the Rad,   opposite to a traditional V mount i spose.   So it would basically be where the under tray is and i would obviously not use an under tray.

Any ideas, as i have been told this will work and i have seen an oil cooler fitted like this on another car.

Regards

Tony

Hi Tony,
By laying it flat you will need some sort of undertray fabricated to direct air up through it and you may even need to block the air going through the mouth of the car to make it efficient.

But l think the bigger problem will be getting the intercooler high enough in the bay to make the ducting required.

If the intercooler is too tall how about getting it cut to reduce the height , l can help here if required.

Hope this helps

Disclaimer ... I\'m no expert this is just my idea\'s/ramblings for discussion :D

I think you would struggle for air flow, to minimise lift you want to try and limit the amount of air that can flow under the car so getting air in from under the car isn\'t going to be a viable option on a modern and well designed from an aerodynamics point of view car.

Or do you mean feed the air from the front of the car and have it vent underneath ? I can see that working but turning the air through 90 degree\'s can\'t be that efficient, I\'d also be worried about the nose lifting due to more air flowing under the car than before (although a lot of the air from the rad if you have a standard bonnet will vent through the bottom of the bay)

Without spending 1000\'s on research the only way to work this one out is to try it and see what happens... but then it might be better to go with a known method to start

The oil cooler for your 4 rotor is flat on the floor of the engine bay Carl?

Hi Rich,
Yes it is,it is kind of like an upside "V" mount but using a large oil cooler instead, and with the ducting the cooling will be no problem.

Hi,
Carl,  i didnt want to disclose your secrets,   does that mean you think it will work?

We have put the radiator in that position in the tripple rotor FD and it seems to be working fine,  although the rad is 1" thick and my i/c is 4" thick.

Clive,
the intercooler will fit height wise but i am worried about blocking all the air flow to rad,  i did this in my FD and in the summer the fans were on a hell of a lot,  it didnt over heat but i think the fans struggled.

I can sort out the plumbing either way, i just thought if it works my rad will have access to direct cool air.

Ahh, I see - an inverted v-mount, I was thinking along a different line - r u using under tray and ducting? Dont see why having the rad at the \'top\' instead of the I/C would make a diff? Should work good Ant? Do it and find out :)

Whats happening with your v-mount kit Carl? Done?

Hi Rich,
I have no need for the undertray the way that it is setup.
The "V" mount that I have developed has been up and running for a long time now.The differences between that and a front mount are very noticeable with a coolant temp drop and inlet\'s too.

So it the cooler shielded from the road some how? I\'m missing this bit!

Got any detailed info about the v-mount? what have u compared it to coolant and AT-wise? any pics? are you selling them yet? £\'s? We have one in the workshop for fitting at the moment, it was made in the UK, dunno who\'s it is though.
