Title: Driveability of single turbo?
Post by: quartermain on March 05, 2005, 10:39:24 PM
I understand that the idea of sequential turbos is to get low lag and reasonable boost, as one turbo is smaller than the other, right?

So does this mean that a single turbo conversion is laggy? I used to have an R32 Skyline which had the ceramic turbos converted to steel, and the lag was a pain. Trying to nip into a gap at a roundabout was positively dangerous!

The FD turbos are both the same size...

A single will have more lag than the little twins do, but it varies tremendously dependant on the turbo and tuning.

If you are thinking of shopping for a single then hitch a ride in a couple of single turbo FDs to get an idea as to whether its for you or not....

I can only speak as l find, but when l had my engine with just mild porting fitted, with a GT35/40  attached l literally had NO lag what so ever as l had full boost every time l went near the throttle !.

I have often said they the car was nicer that any twin Turbo RX-7 than l had ever driven and very very predictable with none of the "be careful of the second turbo in the wet stuff" and l had 400 plus HP at only 0.9 Bar!

However the above was only because of the Turbo/ Porting and mapping that l had with that particular engine.

If you want no lag and a very drivable street car all you have to do is match your engines configuration carefully or as Rich says you will have lag, all comes down to what you want from your car and the use you wish to put it to.

Hope this helps.
