Hi, is someone ever install an t5 cosworth gearbox in fc3 and how well its perform with the rotary?. Bye ian d
just wondered why the t2 box isnt your first choice??
It\'s a good question!,nothing is wrong with TII box.
The gearing is too long in 1st-2nd and not matching to the high reving bridge port 13B, T5 is a close-ratio.
i thought most close ratios were hight first. im sure your one of these blokes that knows the gear ratios for both boxs but i from my experiance fist and second on the t2 are quite low.
TII\'s ratio = 3.483/1st gear@6500rpm
2.015/2nd
T5\'s " = 2.95/1st
1.94/2nd
It\'s means that TII\'s gearing drop approx 3,000 rpm while T5 go approx 2,000 rpm.
Rotary\'s power band at its peak about 7500-9000rpm.
:rollin i knew you would have that.lol
you said the gearing is too long on the t2 box. meaning high. the ratios show that the t2 box has lower gearing than the t5 box.
are you saying the rpm drop from 1st to 2nd is the important bit here?
just thinking allowed, wouldnt a quick accelerating first and second be better than a slow acc 1st with close ratio second be better anyway?
would the 1000rpm less make enough difference to bother making the t5 fit?
i have a pretty quick ported motor. first is usless anyway, and its nice to have gearing so you can hold on to the revs long enough to focus on the road before the next change:rollin
Yours must be a turbo car,I have an early 80\'s n/a13b with bridge port engine out of T.W.R blue and white race car, which was won Spa 24hrs in 1981 or 82.
I bought it way back about 1992 and morfied it to fit into 1986 FC and used it for hillclimb/sprints.
My car\'s weight is about 1100kg and it\'s not light ,I have tried to take off about 4500-5500rpm in 2nd gear, but it was dropping rev and burning the clutch ,so using 1st gear was good, just to be on the safe side. Very diffcult to explained about it in race cond.
The Ford cosworth is using T5 box with 4.1 diff which is the same as Fc\'s diff.
Answer u ques is :- 1) Yes,it is important not to lose time due to changing gear. 2) it make a difference because it is cheap to buy T5 than purchase Quaife c/r gear set.
ah cool, a racing car.
sorry for not being able to answer your question, will it fit.whats it like.
about three months ago i could of been more help as my neighbour had a t5 in his shed and i had a engine in mine.
never even heard of anybody doing the swap. i know a gearbox man. maybe using gears from different models could be a cheap way out.
interesting to learn about the engine you have in your car. I wonder if that car is the same one that Carl recently built an engine for to replace one removed from it at TWR.
But I seem to recall that theres a SPA winning rx7 sat in the show room of a belgian Mazda dealer. ( I think they won more than one)

just for curiousity i had a look at the rev drop. these are change at 5000. and not 100%
1st-2nd 1800rpm
2nd-3rd 1300
3-4and5th about 1100
Hi,
No, the engine from ex- t.w.r race car is belonged to an ex-mazda dealer.
Here is few details about the car ,Blue and white, muti=spoke 7x 15 with re71r bridgestone tyres,blue/green/red potil light for night racing, large ally/ glassfilbe fuel tank, fullequip of MSD elec at footwall at passage side, mody rear suspension and Jack knight close ratio gear box.
Engine details is:-Front plate="T" casting,interm="3B" casting,Rear="R5" casting with all equal size bridge ports
Rotor Housings is:- Capail letter MAZDA logo with blue background and exhaust\'s no sleeve,no side split pins with blocking screws and casting 13B at the top.( good con for it\'s age)
Rotor:- with snap ring,3mm carbon apex with soild corner seal.
Interm plate is the one which I have modified ,which is drilled and tapped to match 6 port middle mount
