Title: Compression test...
Post by: Efini_Llew on February 27, 2005, 12:30:32 AM
Does anyone know where the best place nearest to Leicester is to get a compression test done? Also, how much will it cost?

Cheers:)

hi mate. Your unfriendly mazda garage is probably the nearest and certainly not the best!! and they will rob you of around 90 quid to get one done. If you dont fancy a trip along to pip in the  manchester area which is probably your local rx specialist then i would recommend Graham Goode Racing as they are around the leicester area, the number is 01162440080.

I know Hurley Engineering are not favoured by some of the membership but a compression test I can\'t see a problem in asking them for a price.

They are only in Coventry - must be the nearest \'specialist\' to you.

let us know how you get on with them i did see a FD parked outside GGR a couple of months back so i presume they\'re not totally rotory newbies.....(http://smilies.jeeptalk.org/contrib/edoom/biggrinbounce2.gif)

Yeah I will do - the car has done around 45k (miles!), and I\'m not sure whether its had a rebuild or not (so I\'ll assume not!)... It drove very nicely and seemed perfect!

What kind of readings would you expect?

Defo recommend NOT going to Hurley. Already had a bad experience there but needed a compression test as was thinking of selling the RX so I took it there for what I thought would be a \'routine operation\'.

Got the results and was told the engine was \'tired, but would be fine for a while\'. The buyer pulled out after seeing the results and when I had decided to keep the RX, I showed Pip (WGT - superb!) the test results. To cut it short, Hurley\'s were a load of rubbish and I will not go back there for anything.

Just my experience & opinion.

I would definitely aim for results higher than mine matey! As i have a depressing 0.0 bar in both rotors. I am lead to believe that a newish engine would have a stong reading of around 7.0bar or high 6\'s at least, but anything over about 5bar is still hanging in there. I think that you get 3 readings per rotor (as an average i think, could be wrong- most of the time i am!!!) and you are looking for them to be very similar i.e 5.6 5.7 5.8. if you get readings like 6.5 6.4 5.2 then there is something up. Some technical bods will probably help you out more than me. Anyway fingers crossed.
