Ok I have finally got all my bits together for my FD RX7
I need to change the flywheel on my rebuilt Engine with a lightened one.
The Flywheel nut what size is it?
And what is the best method of removing the nut?
(the engine is out of the car at the mo)
You will need a 54mm socket. So far I\'ve managed to get them off using a 3ft breaker bar with a big piece of scaffolding on top, but the thing flexes like mad. Best with an impact air wrench really. But if it is a new block then it should come off fairly ok. You will also need to lock the flywheel somehow.
Good luck,
Paul:)
Cheers Paul
Would something like this do?

Or would you recommend somewhere else to buy it?
When i removed mine, we did exactly as Paul said and to lock the flywheel i got a piece of wood underneath it so the flywheel teeth cut in to it and then got two mates to put weight on and hold the engine down into the wood as i bounced on the bar until it finally gave way.
tools required
54mm socket and powerbar (see good tool stockist)
scafolding pole (see nearest building site)
two mates (see your local pub)
;)
Thanks guys.
Still trying to look for a socket supplier on the net to buy the 54mm socket, the last one I found I couldnt buy on line.
Seems the 54mm is rare as Hens teeth!!
Any links to where I can buy this socket is much appreciated?
Or if anyone wants to sell me theres or rent it to me Im open to offers :)
I\'ve used a 56mm socket in the past, because of the large diameter 2mm (1mm eitherside) didn\'t seem to matter too much and worked fine, well for me anyway. 56mm is more common as that is the size of a ford transit van hub nut ;)
Paul
cool I found a place that does both, 54mm costs £27 and the 56 costs £11.50. Hmm I think I go for the 56mm lol seeing as im only goin to use it once. I think 1mm either side aint going to make much diff
cheers Paul
Ok I had one attempt taking off the nut this weekend no success.
This was probably due to my mate being too light, I had him stand on the block whilst I was pulling on the breaker bar, I ended up lifting him and the engine up haha.
This week I will be employing two big mates to stand on the engine (one is over 20 stone!!!), will get a scaffolding pole onto the breaker bar for more leverage.
Quick question boys, it is anti clockwise to get that nut off?
