Title: What is this pipe? Loud sucking noise?
Post by: M@r]{ on February 20, 2005, 01:41:49 PM
When the car starts to boost up I get this very loud sucking noise from the drives side of the engine bay, also only able to boost upto about 0.4 bar.  It wasnt like this before.  So im thinking a pipe has come off somewhere.  Having a look I found two pipes that just vent off to air.  Picture attached:  Any ideas?  I thought it was the first one and put a bung in it, but it didnt make  difference.  I also have a hoprrible thought it my be the dump valve sticking open?  Any thoughts on that?

Hi Mark.

The pipe you are showing was where the air pump was connected
the other one being open will just make it Psssshhhh as you change gear.

So if the car has been running around like this then the most common fault for the noise  you are describeing would be that the big plastic pipe under the air pump pipe has lifted and pulled off the manifold.

so should the be blocked off or anything?  I just dont remember the one in the first two pictures being like that, wondered if a bung had come out?

So would this affect the boost not coming up?

Yes it should be blanked ( the rubber pipe) normaly when the air pump is removed that pipe is disconected behind the manifold with an aloy plate, but perhaps someone just bunged yours off

( block it off and see what you get)

Hope this helps

I  did block it off but it made no difference to my problem.  I took it off as it obviously wasnt the cause and I was worried it may cause damage if it wasnt supposed to be blocked

Try checking the large pipe from the turbo to the air cleaner (circled below). the clip looks to have pulled off.
