Uhmmm, I guess you could maybe just check the normal stuff like exhaust manifold leaking? or possible oil leaking onto hot stuff and creating smell. There are heaps and heaps of rubber hoses under the engine bay?? possible one of those that is directly involved in emissions may be perished and leaking fumes?
What doe sit smell like? (silly question I know, sorry?)
good luck and DONT GAS YOURSELF!!!

Apparently there is a charcoal filter canister which can fill up with fuel, apart from this I was coming round to the thought that it is maybe the cat, I am going to get it checked out, anyone know were the charcoal canister is.

Are you getting any \'popping\' noises from area under and just infront of the gearbox? If you have a pre 96 Rex its pretty common for the lower manifold gasket seal to go causing escaping fumes to enter the \'cockpit\'.  The give away is an intermitent popping - especially when warming up the vehicle.  The CAT is the most likely other cause, once you have ruled out any dodgy hoses of course.

lack of cat (straight pipe) will also cause strong fuel smells
