Title: FEED wide arch kit now on : big thanks to all those involved.
Post by: chrisBoid on February 19, 2005, 02:11:07 PM
After months of project managing, the FEED wide arch kit is now on with nice new Volk wheels.

Big thanks to Supreme Autocraft of Bletchley (01908 271601) for fitting the kit and doing an excellent job - thanks to AndyP for recommending them.

Thanks to Shin at Prospec (http://www.prospec-ms.co.uk/) for sourcing the Volks.

Thanks to Geff at RE:Worx (http://www.reworx.com/) for sourcing the FEED wide arch kit.

Edit : forgot to mention that I got the tyres from //www.mytyres.co.uk and used the club discount - ta Si!

And last but not least, thanks to all you club members out there who\'ve had to put up with me going on about offsets and the like for the past 3 months!

Here\'s a pic to keep you all happy, with plenty more (with a bigger resolution) in the members section (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10324).

See you all soon.

Chris.

Wow. :cool

Chris, that looks stunning and the wheels are a perfect choice - your old ones are beautiful wheels but would have looked a little dainty with the widebody, even if the offsets had been right.

Looking forward to seeing it at one of the shows soon.  Would also be curious to get the details of your bodyshop - looks like they\'ve done a great job on that so might be handy to keep hold of if they aren\'t too far away.

Looks stunning!! Can\'t wait to see it at some of the shows later this year, have you thought about lowering it a little?

Looks like Feed do a good fit too, did they bead the rear arches to the rear or blend them - I can\'t see from ya pic (and I still have to renew my membership - naughty me).

I have my new kit and bits in a huge box in the hall, just waiting for the bodyshop to get a space for me. Then I can post up some pics of mine too!!

Lemme know if you\'d like a FEED sticker set for the car ;) :wave

Ben : e-mail sent.
Unfortunately I can\'t lower it as my drive is too steep :(  I have to get the rear inner arch lining "massaged" as the 265mm tyres are rubbing when I go over a bump (shoddy UK roads!).
The kit wasn\'t as easy to fit as I thought it\'d be, they had to do a lot of fiddling, but they resprayed my bonnet (the previous attempt by someone else was a bit off) and improved the bonnet shut lines.
One piece which I\'m not happy with is that you can stil see the original rear arch peeking out from the wide arch - I\'m not sure what to do about this.
Not sure what you mean by bead - the rear arches aren\'t blended, I like the bolted on look.

What new kit are you getting for yours?

I was going to ask about this.  Thought the rear arch would have had to have been cut away to allow the wider tyres to be accomodated.

Looks good though.

Thanks for the email m8 I\'ll do you a visual tonight hopefully!:D

Beading is when you have a small line of filler to perfectly join the two parts so you have no gaps.

I\'m pretty sure the original arch would either be heavly rolled/flarred or just removed to let the new wider arches sit over the top. I\'ll check my Feed catalouge and Hyper revs when I get back for some pics. Pretty sure it\'s cut away though myself.

My new kit is the Kazama wide-body kit. Looks loverly when I lay it all out in the lounge in the shape of my car and sit in the middle making engine noises!!:rollin ;)

Does that have front wings Ben?  I could be interested in youre flared ones if it does as my wings are battered on the underside.

Lee : the original rear arches have not been cut at all, there was no need to with my standard suspension, although with what Ben is saying and what I thought they\'d have done anyway was to cut it away enough so it couldn\'t be seen :( Looks like I\'ll be planning a trip back there...

I\'m going to investigate the rubbing this week and see if I can\'t improvise something, you drift boys must be good at this kind of thing - any tips?

Ben : ooo Kazama - that\'s going to look great :)

You could always get a heat gun and wrap a towl around a strong pole then do some custom arches yourself lol!! I\'ve seen them do this over in Japan as a quick fix although you risk cracking the paint on the original arches.

Your best bet is to go back to the bodyshop and tell them to trim back the arch up inside the Feed ones then roll the cut lip back onto itself so you have a nice smooth surface to be re-sprayed. Then you\'ll have no rubbing!!

--
Hi Lee yep I\'ll be selling the custom front fenders too, they should go for good money being one-offs and made out of metal aswell - which is very unusual due to the time and effort requirded to get such an awkward shape . Currently accomadating 18 x 9 +18 offset BTW. The Rear fenders will be going too which have been rolled and pulled out too

Will be selling the Auto-Exe rear wing, R-Magic side skirts, and rear bumper too! All been re-sprayed too.

I\'ll put this lot in the for sale section once I take pics of it all - please PM me if interested. Sorry again Chris for the hi-jacking!!;)

Post by: chrisBoid on February 21, 2005, 02:10:09 PM
Just to make clear, the rubbing is occuring on the inner wheel arch _lining_ , not on the bodywork.

I think I\'m going to take it back and get them to: -

1) trim the original arch so it can\'t be seen.
2) join the 2 arches so it\'s smooth.
3) massage the inner arch lining to stop the rubbing.

Ben : what rear wing are you going for?  I just realised, it\'ll look awesome in black!

Ben:

You got MSN yet?  Dont want to keep hi-jacking the thread.  How can you sell the rear arch?  Its one massive piece joining into the roof?  I may be interested in front wings / rear bumper depending on price and stuff.

Chris:

Im surprised you are not getting arch rub.  The whole idea of wide arch is bigger wheels that wouldnt of gone in the standard arches so they need to be cut away lol.  It may just be your suspension, but standard has lots of roll which usually makes things worse.  I will PM you something in a bit.  Rubbing on inner trim, a lot of the drift guys just remove it.  Im not sure thats a good idea for airflow though.  It probably only rubs on lots of lock so may not be a problem.  Just got to be carefull as I dont know if theres any wires behind the liner.  There is on the 200Sx which people have gone thourgh before with tyre rub.
Title: FEED wide arch kit now on : big thanks to all those involved.
Post by: Initial-D on February 21, 2005, 02:43:09 PM
Out of interest regarding the inner trim, on my front arches I had the inner trim cut back to stop the rubbing with the car being lowered. I had some under seal type stuff put under there to protect from stones etc.. Being at the front I was told to be careful in very wet weather in case of water getting into the electronics - but as yet I\'ve had no issues. I imagine once the back arches are done I\'ll have to pull out or trim back the inner trim too.

I think you should have the arches cut back as said and also have the lining trimmed first to see how it behaves before pulling it all out.

I don\'t think you should blend the rear arches tho as I really like the definitive body line between the Feed arches and car body. It\'s as Feed have it on all there race cars too.

Lee, I\'m just getting Msn now what\'s ya name? (PM it to me thanks).:wave

I\'ve got a C-West, Carbon Fiber 3D GTII wing with black struts about 1500-1600 mm in size! Huge!! Saw it on the Feast FD track car and thought \'I gotta get me one of thse\'!!;)

Initial-D, have a closer look at the picture.....that\'s a Type II-R front not a Type II. The differences are subtle but they\'re there. The Type II-R is extremely hard to get hold of, it\'s even got the genuine FEED sidelights which cost $$$! Chris, you got yourself a cracker there, looks absolutely incredible!
Title: FEED wide arch kit now on : big thanks to all those involved.
Post by: chrisBoid on February 21, 2005, 03:17:18 PM
Lee : I see what you\'re saying now, I\'ll have a closer look and try giving the car a bounce to see if that\'s the problem, it\'s the rear arch by the way.

Shame I can\'t set my suspension a bit harsher until it gets sorted.

Post by: Initial-D on February 21, 2005, 03:23:20 PM
Thanks Millspeed for the info - I was aware of that hence why I listed mine as a Type II and not the revised version.

Yup the sidelight covers are pretty pricey as are the Feed HID kits!

Add some Feed coilovers onto your car next Chris!!

I\'m going to have to take it back to the body shop to get the rear arches looked at.  Which probably means pulling them off, cutting back and making good the existing arches then putting the new arhes back on.  Cha-ching.  Sigh.

I think you have argument for them to do it for free as it should of been completed in the first place. If they kick up a fuss they should at least go 50/50 with you as a sign of understanding to your situation.

i know on my RE-A kit the rear liners were refitted even though the full wings were replaced, you can  put your hand between them! guess it was more to keep any crap out of the arches

Its not the liner its the arch  (I think lol).

You had a chance to have a look yet Chris and see?

When I ran 9 +20\'s with 255\'s I kept smacking the arch.  Was almsot undriveable but was cool hit bumps on the motorway and seeing plumes of tyre smoke pouring off the rims :rollin

Hey Ben, great work,

I prefer the second one, it\'s a bit more subtle :)
I quite like the FEED double stripe: -

But in colour(s) that go well with blue (silver/white and something?).

Makes me think I should try and get sponsorship :)

Lee : sorry, I haven\'t had a chance yet (haven\'t been home), will get a chance this evening though.

I have verified that the rubbing is occurring on the old rear arches, wiping my finger across them revealed black rubber - I\'m suprised the stock suspension has that much give in it!

Took the car back to Supreme who are going to sort it the best they can.  This means taking the wheel off and cutting away as much of the original arch as possible and cleaning it up - all without removing the wide arches which are bonded on which makes removing them rather difficult.

It shouldn\'t all be _too_ expensive, and I\'m confident in their ability.
Title: FEED wide arch kit now on : big thanks to all those involved.
Post by: J4P RX on February 22, 2005, 07:13:57 PM
Ahh cool I was sure that would be it :)

At least you can get it sorted.  Pain its all on and bonded now but with the wheel off from underenath hopefully they can get enough out the way.

Heres a pic for you Chris of a RE Amemiya rear arch job, if you look to the top right of the pic you can see where they got a large carnivorous animal to nibble the original arch away to make enough clearance for the larger rims.. Lol:rollin

Hopefully you can sorta make out the amount cut back to right up inside the arch.

Glad to hear your getting the arches re-done I\'m sure it\'ll be fine removing the excess original arch with the wheel off. Then you can go over bumps and corner faster too!

So what other colous do ya like with the blue I\'m thinking Gold! The Feed car was my basis for the Feed stickers as it lkooks really cool - theres another one too which promotes their Spec R oil, I\'ll have to do one with that on too at some point!:cool

Good pics of under arch shenanigans Ben, metal scuff plates are a great idea.

Regarding colours to match blue, I\'ve thought about this quite a lot and can\'t come up with much (too much time playing Need for Speed Underground :o ).  I think white and gunmetal grey (to match wheels).  Gold with blue reminds me to much of a Subaru.

I\'m not quite convinced on vinyls, I certainly like the plain look at the moment, which allows me to enjoy the new lines of the car :)

Russ : if you\'re giving C-West credit for the lights then you have to include Mazdaspeed for the rear wing :)

FEED / RE-A / MazdaSpeed / C-West

I like to think I\'ve pulled all the best bits from each range :)

One day it wil be lowered like that, with metal scuff plates installed under the arches!

Don\'t forget, your car was one of the ones that gave me the inspiration.

Hi Ross, with a casual glance they are similar, but I prefer the FEED one, it fits in with the lines of the original car more and doesn\'t make the rear of the car any bigger.

Quite a few of the wide arch kits are similar in appearance and usally remove the brake duct section for better cooling.

I still love the big wide body kits from Kazama, Boarder and the RE Amemiya 95 wide kit, although they do add alot to the shape of the FD making it more of a JGTC car than street car.
Title: FEED wide arch kit now on : big thanks to all those involved.
Post by: rextreme on February 24, 2005, 08:53:15 AM
Wide is cool.

The RE-A one has the screw holes in the rear which arent so cool.

I like the Feed one better as the carbon skirts are cool.
But I also like how low the skirts are on mine. LOW

I think the only copy job is the new r-magic one.
A total RE-A rip off.

The others like Kazama make the car look very square which kind of defeats the purpose of the rx7 look IMO.

My rear arches are just trimmed. I run under size rubber and keep the car about 100mm of the deck so theres no problems even with 30mm spacers.

Chris, even though your getting pressure to do stuff.
Do it later. It still looks better than most others I have seen anyway.

I get comments for my sub standard paintjob, but you only notice it when your 2 inches from the car.
I get many more for the WOW factor.

You will notice you get even more attention now.

Enjoy it ...
Russ.

I wish,.. low and deck hugging.

I wish I could run my car that low Russ and never have to worry about scraping! I guess if it\'s just for show hydraulics or airbag suspension is one answer.

Quite true in what you say about doing it your way, at the end of the day it\'s what makes you happy.

I love the Kazama kit so I bought one.:D

I thought my photochop was obvious.

I dont run it this low.
I could go lower
I have about 1 inch left on my HKS coilovers.
But every morning i just touch my driveway.

I bolted big metal plates on my parents driveway.
It works.

ID : OOOh Kazama....

Type 1 or II???

Your not going to do the spider thing are you...I hope not.
I really like how low the front bar looks.
the squareish makes the 7 look almost GTRish
I have seen a few in the Jap mags recently. quite nice.
Should cover your wheels nicely.

I got the type I with JGTC style front fenders (main reason I got it - love those cars) along with a huge 3D GT C-West type II wing. No spider theme!! Gonna do some gold and white/chrome vinlys up the sides and stuff for the shows over the summer too, keeping it all black aswell. I think I may need spacers though as it\'s an extra 30mm on the fronts and 35mm on the rear.

I knew it was a Photshop lol!! Just wished I could actually go that low and still drive the car on British roads!:D

Good idea with the drive way too.;)

Pete at Supreme Autocraft pulled out all the stops and fixed the arch/wheel rubbing problem in double quick time :)  It was no mean feat as he did it all without removing the new bonded on kit.

Now all I need is some good weather to see how it handles.

Hehe, lots of people say that, that\'s how it came over from Japan, I assume it is standard suspension.

I suppose suspension height is practicality Versus a "slightly" meaner stance.
In the case of your car Chris, i wouldn\'t risk any major lowering as the car looks A+ as it is!!-think of steep driveways and nasty speed humps

Wow you sure had that done quick!!

Looks much better now without the inner arch showing - top job!!:D Did you have the original splash guards re-fitted or some made to measure??
Title: FEED wide arch kit now on : big thanks to all those involved.
Post by: chrisBoid on March 01, 2005, 09:30:41 AM
Yep, double quick time :)

They are the original guards, it\'s all a nice neat job.

I am thinking that the rear arch well is a bit too big, now the inner arch has gone, the gap has increased.  But I really don\'t think I could lower it because of my steep drive :(

I may try and stiffen it up a bit though.  Ideally I want ride height adjustable suspension at the push of a button, like edfc but for ride height - I don\'t think that kind of suspension exists though - outside of costly air suspension.

I\'ve been advised against height adjustable air/hydrualic suspension as it\'s no good for handling.

Best to stick to coilovers with ride adjustment like Teins/Aragosta/Apexi at least £900 tho!!

With all this talk of going too low - has anyone fitted metal sheet to the underside of the car for speed bumps?

Is this a lunatic idea - or could you get light metal to attach and protect the bottom much like race cars have.

Presumably it would be great for airflow, and if you hit one of those evil speed bumps that clear the front end, but smack the middle of the underside, you\'d be protected?

Just a quick note to say how pleased I am with the great level of after care service and friendly nature of the team at Supreme Autocraft.  I noticed a few small areas of imperfections, dropped in this morning and they had them all sorted in 10 minutes :)

Chris, your car\'s looking awesome!!!!

I remember it well when I first bought it. It\'s great to see it went to a home that thoroughly deserved it. You\'ve improved it further with excellent taste too  :cool

Having seen the FEED vinyls on cars here in Japan, I have to say - I like them a lot. Would recommend getting a set, it\'ll show off the curves better!

The previous owner of your car in Japan clearly loved his FD before selling it. I\'m sure he\'d be proud to see how the car\'s progressed 2 years on!

Miguel : I\'ve seen the vinyls available from the FEED site but they are all small ones; I assume you are talking about the ones that run the length of the car?  Do you have a picture?
P.S.  I\'d prefer it if FEED sponsored me though!

The only picture I have is one of the FEED demo car at the recent all Japan RX-7 meet, after it had been in an unfortunate accident with another RX-7 on the track. Shame, as it was a seriously quick RX-7. Maybe the quickest car there, in street trim.

Did see a black one there with the FEED stripes which looked awesome, whilst intact. I really like the FEED wide arch kit and stripes.

If I had your RX-7 I\'d definitely put them on, they\'re well matched to the kit and help define the curves of the car better, in a classy way.

Hi Juriën

I think they\'re Advan wheels, have a look at this site: http://www.yokohamatire.jp/yrc/Japan/wheel/

As I am writing here, I am uploading the pictures and details of the gold FD3S.
Might not have time to correctly order them and put the captions on, but I will do that when I get back later tonight... You\'ll be able to take a look anyways!

I think they are the new ADVAN RS,
I dont think you can get them commercially yet.

But Feed cars do all the advan promotions so they get special stock.

ie. newT6, newT7(released) and newRS

Aaaarghhhh, drooooool - thanks!

Would love a dedicated track set.

Out of interest, I am looking at the FEED FD above, do they run a v-mount setup because I can\'t see a big front mount?
Title: FEED wide arch kit now on : big thanks to all those involved.

The Feed Spirits FD runs a large front mount setup with ADVAN RS wheels (F9J-19 +22 ~ R10J-19 +25) the Feed Advan car also runs a large FMIC but I don\'t have the wheel specs for it, look to be 18"s.

Thanks for the pics Rextreme I spent ages scanning the double page ads from Option2 and photoshopping the creases out lol!

The RX7 Magazine I have with feature on both FEED cars shows they also run a 30mm spacer on the rear of their cars.!

Last year they were recommending 18X10 +18 with a 30mm rear spacer at auto salon with 255x40x18 all round for track use on the time attack car. They also run a litle undersize tire for almost no sidewall flex. Feed Time attack car is 460ps soo not huge but decent power.
just a HKS GT3540 turbo with a FMIC, I dont think Vmount is be all and end all. but is very nice setup. Conventional setup doesnt give that bad performance when you run a radiator behind it thats about 3" thick!! They are well setup.

Feed spirits car with 19" rims has a boost up standard twin setup. 380hp
both run PFC.

.. no worries about pics. they have always been there, should have posted sooner, they are nice .

It does make me wonder what the optimal tyre/wheel setup is for the FD, I guess it\'s down to your power output and suspension/geometry settings plus anything else that makes a difference eh!

What issue RX-7 mag has that feature btw 2005 No25?

I should be replacing my suspension soon with a proper setup on some hard springs, then just need to upgrade the swaybar mounts - will leave the standard sway bars as I think the springs will be more than strong enough to stop roll. I like the idea of running smaller tires for reducing tire flex, I\'m running 275x40x18 on my 18x10s so I may try the 255x40x18 as its cheaper too lol! ;) You know what the fronts should be on 18x9s 235x40x18, 215x35x18 perhaps as Feeds are 20 smaller?

I think you\'d be better off with decent sway bars and the springs set not quite so hard (on the presumption that the car will be used predominantly on the road rather than being built for the track). This way you will retain better road manner but atill wont have a roll problem when cornering rather than if you just use the spring rate on their own for roll resistance. You may get bored (tired) of really hard springs on the road.

I would be inclined to speak to a chassis expert before randomly selecting spring rates/coilovers/tyres etc. Could save you a lot of cash and get you the car setup the way you want a lot quicker with much less trial and error. Its a complicated business! James\' recommended the guys that did his car I think, there are sure to be numerous people that could \'do a job\' on your FD and completely transform it...

If you put on springs that are too hard, the car may start jumping over bumps and give you less control at speed as well as loss in traction out of corners. A decent pair of thicker anti roll bars will virtually elliminate body roll on an FD3S.

Suspension tuning is an art that takes many years of experience, it\'s not a trial and error thing that you can find optimal settings for just by luck, IMHO.

As a rule of thumb, buy the best suspension coilovers you can afford from a specialist manufacturer who only makes suspension.

Aragosta or Ohlins are the best off the shelf. You can also get a set of hand built Bilstein coilovers that are better than Ohlins or Aragosta.. through Nishiki, where I had mine built....Not cheap, but worth every penny.

Post by: Initial-D on July 31, 2005, 06:30:45 PM
I\'m basically setting the car up in the same manner as the RE Amemiya touge car with the intention of using it for track days too, the fact I\'m only gonna run the car hard on the track makes me opt for a more track orientated setup. As long as the suspension has enough stroke for road usage I don\'t mind my teeth chattering!

Thanks for the info though Rich! I\'ll try the springs that come with coilovers before going full steam ahead with all the tweaking, otherwise I find you never feel the benefit from what you had before. Theres a motorsport garage down the road from me who can help me with all the setting work as they prep rally and formula cars.

Going for some Zeal coilovers BTW. If I upgrade the roll bars too what are the recomendations? Auto-exe look good with twice the thickness or maybe the racing beat ones? Not too bad price-wise if possible!

Miguel have you changed the front roll bar mount too or just the bars? What spring rates are you running? I\'m looking at 16 F and 18 R.

Yes ben,
Rx7 Mag no25.
Has the New Panspeed car on the cover.

I have been in Miguels car and it handles superbly for its road/track setup.
I dont think you would need much more. you can really work on your driving ability with a car setup like that.

I wouldnt go too skinny on tyres. depends on the brand too. some 255 are a few mm wider than others.

I think the expense of 18" wheels for track use are bit of overkill although looks are different.  17" rims on the track with S-tyres do the job. Not that many FD\'s run 18" rims in Japan.

Suspension tuning is personal also.
Pan speed run 255x40x17 AO48 ADVAN on light 17x9.5 rays CE28
Ohlins suspension with F16kg and R18kg springs
Seems to be a very good setup but the car is mega low.

Amemiya New Time attack car. yellow with porsche front.
only 17" enkei 17x9 front and 17x10rear same tyres
Quatum RE-A sus with 16kg f and 18kg rear spring rates.

You get a bit of ride with the 17 over the 18

Feed cars are 18kg front and rear and run 18" for display
Track in japan usually means 17" rims on the old FD.

Food for thought.

Post by: Initial-D on August 01, 2005, 02:02:16 PM
Yeah that was my basis only I\'d be on 18"s instead of 17"s!
I really wanted to have hard suspension so I can run the car low without risk of scraping on hard corners (my kit wouldn\'t like that)!

As said previously I wanted 16kg F and 18kg R on low sitting coilovers on 18"s with possibly slightly smaller S tires 225 F and 265 R to reduce wall flex. I wasn\'t sure what to do about the roll bars tho... replace them with harder ones, get a RE:A reinforcement bar to replace the standard front roll bar mount and keep standard roll bars? Do you know what Miguels setup is in that department?
