Title: Octane booster
Post by: Steve Burnett on February 16, 2005, 07:37:51 PM
Anyone used this stuff?? It says it can up the RON rating by 4. That would give about 101 with optimax.

Millers Oils CVL Turbo
CVL turbo will increase the octane of commercially available pump fuel by up to 4 RON (40 octane points). Independent tests have shown that a combination of CVL Turbo and Shell Optimax will give a Research Octane Number (RON) of between 101 and 102 octane. CVL Turbo provides flame front control to prevent detonation and is suited to all turbo and non-turbo engines where maximum performance is demanded. It will appeal to track day enthusiasts, rally competitors and other forms of competitive motoring where the additional octane is demanded. CVL Turbo is suitable for occasional use in vehicles fitted with catalytic converters and is compatible with nitrous injection systems. Use Millers Octane Plus for continuous use in catalyst equipped vehicles.

I have used it on a track day purely for extra safety, but other than that I wouldn\'t  bother with it. No improvement in power (fairly obvious) and not much noticable difference in knock readings.

most people use nitrous formula, available from shyauto as well as other places

Or alternativly, you could buy some toluene from a chemical supplier, as that is the main ingredient. Works out a hell of a lot cheaper that way.

Thanks for the plug Gerry but we stopped selling NF because we couldnt get the stuff most of the time .

We always knew when stocks were running low because the other NF dealers would contact us !!.
I even tried to get it direct from Aus due to the supply problems but it turned out that the guy bringing it over here is a relative so l got nowhere.

It may be of interest to you all though that l sent a bottle to be analysed by 76 motor oils before the above and they reported back that there was no way this chemical raised the octane level in any way that could be deemed significant and saw nothing in N/F to raise the octane to anything like the levels claimed !

As they said they are one of the oldest specialist performance fuel / oil producers in the USA and have never produced an additive because they know you need a significant amount of additive volume to raise octane levels, hence Cool Blue etc only comes in 25 litre drums.

The punch line was "We have never ever seen an additive in ANY little bottle to make us remotely excited"

Sorry Guys, yes l know it makes nice pops n bangs when its in your car but it doesn\'t mean its offering the protection that a good lump of race fuel in your tank can give when the boost is on.

p.s. if you just want pops n stuff berkisking is right.:D

Hope this helps

There are people who swear that its the best thing since sliced bread, and others who think its useless tat.......you will have to make up your own mind on the issue....

But if i were you, i would save my money and just run the car on a good quality pump fuel ( optimax, super etc ) for road use, and race fuel for really hard driving.

bear in mind the benefits of race fuel will be minimal unless your car is set up to run on the stuff. although it will help prevent  pinking ( detonation, pre-ignition whatever you want to call it..)

But thats just my opinion.
