for a road going fd running a single turbo conversion. which turbo would be best for retaining driveabilty ? im hoping for 500 bhp at the fly. my choices are t04, super t70, t78 or t88.
your feedback is appreciated
thankyou.
T88 is the biggest.....however, it has the biggest amount of turbo lag, but for the strip.....its awesome.
I\'m going t78, big turbo with a bit of lag aswell.....but i want 500fly hp also.
I think the big t04r\'s can get near 500 also.
Ross has a t88 on his drag car.......that ran a 11.2 1/4 with a crapped out clutch
Dan!!
I thought the HKS T51 KAI in Geoffs car was bigger, I could be wrong that ran 10.61 @ 130plus.
Try the R85 by KGPARTS, that produces approx 450 plus @ wheels at 15psi on normal fuel.
Run a Garrett GT 35/40.
Regards
Carl
Out of his list the t88 is the biggest :)
Dan!!
I\'m running a T88 on mine - Does take ages to spool, think mine starts to spool @ just over 3000rpm and reaches full boost around 5500rpm.
So if your caught with ur pants down in the wrong gear, then is like a slug crawling through treacle because of lag.
But once it does start to spool :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
as carl said get the gt35/40 mine starts boosting at about 2800 and then bosh doeasnt run out of puff at all

I think when Ross ran 11.3 it wasnt a T88, think it was a TA45 or simliar. Pretty big still tho :D Sure Ross will fill in the details.
GT35R will make it I would guess but it would need a decent port and some boost. Max\'s makes 370ish at the wheels at .95 bar but having said that Max\'s is a regular street port and is tuned very conservatively, both timing and fuel...
Buy a turbo that will suit your driving style and cars application - obvious statement but there are a lot of people buying big turbos for the sake of it with little idea of what the setup will really be like to live with on a daily basis. I\'m lucky in having been able to drive a number of different setups via RE:Worx, including Geffs T51 more than most. I\'d suggest any one looking for a new turbo tries and drives as many turbos as they can before making an informed choice. Bigger is certainly not always better, so try before u buy :)
HTH,
Rich
Ah sorry, i thought it was a t88 he had on....my mistake:)
The t88 is hooooooge tho:D
Dan!!
Turbo power table, granted not made for rotaries but just a guide.
I\'ve a Garrett GT35/40.
Drive it every day for work-motorway shortblasts and town driving.
At a safe boost controlled level of around 0.9bar, it pulls from the high 2000\'s for ever.( I think my Dyno was around 320 @ the wheel...so MAX\'s 370 @ the wheel kills me!!!)At the Fly is more!
Mega power, a la Geff n co. suits the record breakers...i\'m totally jealous of this..if only i had 2 FD\'s..........!!
:p
Pete
You want this for doing your rounds Pete?! :D
Rich,
Flames n fumes death may rear the Shipman debate!!:p
Pete
Hi Jamie,
As per the start of this thread that you wanted a driveable road car, listen to what Pete, Carl and what l am about to suggest then repeat after me --
GT35, GT35, GT35, GT35, GT35, GT35, GT35, or if not you could even try a GT35!.
Seriously these turn the Rotary into a very very faaaaaaaaaaaaaast tractable road car, making it a predictable pussy when you want it and then a Looney monster if you need it !!!! :D :D :D :D.
I still remember setting up my three stage boost gauge for the first time giving a Max of 1bar with a 35 fitted on a clean dry straight road with good Eagles on the back and l couldn\'t put the wheels down till l got to 4th !! :rollin :rollin :rollin
Please don\'t go fitting any of those T04 tractor turbo\'s when for the same money you can have an upto date Turbo that is ideal for Rotarys.
So while I am editing my wish list. Does the GT35 require major modification to fuel, cooling and exhaust systems to deliver Clive\'s promise? (The wish list is attached to a budget.)
Had always assumed single turbo RX\'s were less tractable for \'normal\' use but the more I read on here, the more the double plumbing seems to be an unnecessary complication which make s me wonder why Mazda adopted the route in the first place.
Not too much recent time with turbochargers and things have obviously come on a bit since the Janspeed Sierra Turbo I ran years ago. That was prone to "slug in treacle becomes speeding bullet" transitions. These were not always predictable, appropriate or welcome but endlessly entertaining or terrifying in roughly equal measure. (It was the obscene appetite for compressor blades and other components [like body shells] that put me off the turbo experience for such a long time.)
Turbo\'s have come on a long way since the early 90\'s.
A ball bearing turbo is now not out of the reach of most people,it was back then and a major expense for a car manufacturer.
That is why they are so good and work so well, ball bearing technology that helps them to spool so much earlier in the rpm range.

Carl
Lots of good turbos out there, depending on budget. Maybe also worth considering a turbo that may be easy or cheap to rebuild in the event of any issues. Different people have a different opinion on streetable, it\'s down to personal choice. If you can go along to some meets and bump a ride with some of the guy\'s that have single turbos and see what takes you fancy. Porting and tuning play as big a part in spoolup and outright power as does the choice of turbo.
I think the porting affects the car more when thinking of the term streetable mor ethan the turbo but that\'s me. As I said to each there own, but it may be worth numping a ride as I said and also searching around on what other people have posted on thios and other fourms and weighup all the options.

Well said Bri. To me the port and tune are the biggest dominators as far as streetability is concerned.
Hmmmm..... At the minute i have a T88, from what i\'ve read would it be worth switching this for the GT35 that everyone is raving about????
Hi-Jack over :D
Big boy eh?
Depends on your aims. What you have now will give you massive power with the right ancillaries, at the expense of spool up being moderately high in the rev range, I\'m guessing full boost around 5k revs? Not worked on one yet.
If you think yours drives fine as is, leave it. If you\'d like more power lower down the rev range, and run less than one bar, then consider going smaller.
What you have now has huge potential, if you want to raise your game and run fairly high boost, like well over 1 bar.

Hi Max
Once i got past the problems with "the clutch that is twin plated" it is fairly driveable. Starts spooling at just over 3000 rpm\'s and reaches max at about 5000ish rpm\'s
You do get a massive kick from it though :D :D :D
What i do like about it is, with the boost not coming on till 3000ish rpm, with a careful selection of gears, you can "pootle" around town without an unexpected "kick" from the turbo!
But put your foot down and off you go:D
But do think i will have to get more work done to try and get a few more little ponies out of it without turning the boost up over 1 bar. Need to be ready for RS II. Hoping to try and get around 400 - 450ish at the wheels if that is attainable.

that power is easily attainable with that turbo
& the rest.
wow, thanks for the huge reply. looks like i\'ll be going down the gt35 route. where is best to get the gt35 kit from ?
Clive supplies them at Shy auto.See above banner.
Regards
Carl
RE:Worx (banner up top too) supplies them also and we\'ve probably fitted more than most too. In fact this last week we\'ve fitted a T04E, a T04R - and are fitting a GT35/40 tomorrow as it happens, following by setup and tuning on the dyno of course ;-)
