Title: Dodgy engine rebuild?
Post by: Ricco_04 on February 08, 2005, 01:49:42 PM
Is it possible for an engine to be rebuilt and to have a low compression?

Reason for asking is Mazda recon my engine is low on compression but could be fine for another 30,000 miles. Either way they have scared me!

Not sure on this one, however if in doubt take it to a specialist to check over dont take Mazda\'s word for it .

Sorry to dissapoint you Si but Hurey didnt do the rebuild!!!

The fighres I was quoted are :

Primary Rotor
5.4
5.6
4.7

Secondary Rotor
6.1
6.5
6.2

As you can guess, I have been very reluctant to drive the car.  I use it as my every day car too but have been getting lifts to work - Neally afford the rebuild in fuel money saved!!! :D :D

Hi,
I am running fine at slightly lower figures than yours. Affects are decrease in low end tourque, but neglible loss at peak power. Suspected cause for my low compression figures are weak/saggy apex seal springs. Rebuild 12000 miles ago.
Average readings of 5 bar on all faces.

Hi John,

You seem to have the same deal - you have made it a little bit of a less worry for me (thanks!!) I took it on a ride out the other day, did 60 miles and loved every bit of it!!

Just as a query ; while the readings are low and engines may last so many more miles will there be increased emmisions and increased fuel consumption (harder to pass mot and hit the wallet even harder!) ?

Its really annoying cause I bought this car mainly on the strength of the engine being rebuilt 25k odd miles ago!

Hi,
Unfortunately you will experiance increased immisions and fuel consumption, to a certain extent depending on whether the engine is modified in any way, but... if you have a standalone ecu(apexi/Microtech etc) you will have the option to lower your fuelling at idle and over the test rpm. This will increase hydro carbons, but will decrease co2 which is being tested. I would suggest one of the specialist have a look at the car, to gain their opinion. Where are you by the way?

Im in Worcestershire (about 60 or so miles from Pip.) I will have to go pay him a visit as soon as!!

I did want to get some electronics in there but really dont know anything about them (just berig honest!!) I know that the best option is for the Apex-I Power FC but that amounts to the sum total of my knowledge!! (anyone know how much they are and how much it costs to get them up and running?)

I really must thank you - Im feeling so much better about the mota now!

Thanks for the link John.

So what do yo recon - shall I carry on driving around as normal and not worry? I did ask WGT about it and they said that "its living on borrowed time" so if it does let go then its gonna be even more for the rebuild?

Drive it / don\'t drive it - I (as ever!!) am confused!!! LOL!
