Title: Induction Kit Help
Post by: Rich Cheung on February 05, 2005, 02:45:25 PM
Just in the process of fitting an Apexi Power Intake but having a few probs so hope you guys can help (see attached pics).

1. Are they fitted the right way around. When I close the bonnet it is pressing against the top filter.

2. I have a pipe (top filter) with nothing going to it. Is this correct. The jap diagrams show I should attach it to one of the pipes but all pipes are attached to the filters already.

3. I have a bracket and metel pipe left over. Any ideas where these should go ?

4. Took car for a quick spin and its making a screeching noice (could be mooing but not sure).

Any help greatly appreciated.

Difficult to see from your pics, and I am not expert, but on the std air box, there are 2 smaller diameter hoses (standing facing the car, they are on the left hand side at the rear of the air box), with valves in line, which Mazda term the charge relief valve and the air bypass valve.

Your pic would suggest one of those hoses is not attached. You have one of them, going to the lower of the intakes - where is the 2nd pipe? I\'d hazard a guess that the 2nd pipe should be attached to the spare opening on the highest intake filter.

Hi Rich

I have these filters and a quick observation is that the three pipes on the top filter on mine all have pipes going into them, the bottom filter has no pipes going into it.

The bottom filter pipe isblocked on my set up.

The bracket on mine work as follows, the two filters bracket togeather and then another bracket atatche\'s them to the car.

I am sure I have a pic, I cant go and take one now as I have removed the filters as I am puting them under the drivers light for more cold air:)

Hope that helps.

Cheers

One of the pipes is not used-can use a rubber endbit with small jubilee clip from original air box.
the screetching noise is because the cylindrical metal piece should be in one of the rubber hoses-I know cos when i had these filters, i removed it to see if more suction noise..but it screetched-put it back in!

Thanks for all your help guys.

Pete Smith - Your setup seems to different to mine. By that I mean on mine the filter facing straight forward is on the bottom intake and the one at 45 degrees is on top. Yours is the other way around. Does this make a difference ?? From the bad Jap instructions diagram I have it shows the 45 degree angled filter going to the top intake.

On my top filter I have now fitted the bung left over from the original filter into the pipe with nothing going into it.
Also I have put the metal restrictor bung into the top pipe of the 45 degree angle filter (required hammering in) and fitted the rubber hose pipe back on. These seems to have stopped the mooing / whining noise.

Apart from the 2nd bracket not fitting all seems well.
From what I\'ve said please let me know if I\'ve made a complete balls up as I don\'t want to kill the car.

Many thanks,
Rich

Hi Rich,
That seems fine to me!-your Apexi kit is probably a newer version.
what\'s next on the shopping list then??!:evillaugh

Thats good. Your probably right, least I can sleep sounder now.
Next purchase is an Apexi ECU and Commander. I\'m in on the group buy thats happening at the moment.

After that possibly some body mods, was thinking of a new bonnet but I\'ll see how funds go.

Your engine bay looks fantastic. Where did you get the stainless steel intakes from and are they expensive ??

rich, do i need to hammer the metal restrictor into the pipe? it didn\'t seem like it would fit to me (i can\'t check properly now as i\'ve fitted it without the restrictor).

i\'m also having problems fixing the filters to the car. i\'ve put one brace on the lower filter and bolted that to the car. there are two other braces: one to hold the filters together and one to fix the angled filter to the car (the one showed in the pic earlier in this thread, rich\'s pic 2). at the moment i can\'t see a way to fit these using the existing airbox fixing points, does anyone have any pics of these fixings? would be much appreciated.

i\'ve attached a pic showing the approx position of the braces (green) and where i think the metal restrictor goes (red arrow), does all seem ok?

MSC125 - Your kit looks the same as mine.

1. Yes I hammered the metal restrictor bung into the metal pipe you indicate with the red arrow. It stopped the mooing sound I was getting when accelerating.

2. The blanking bung you\'ve put on the lower filter I put on the top filter.

3. The pipe you\'ve fitted on the left side of the top filter I put on the bottom filter instead...but...

When I went to Pips at WGT for some other work he removed the pipe from the bottom filter and left it to vent to the atmosphere.

I can only presume this is right as a rotary expert did it.

Also I agree you cant fit the last bracket to the top filter on the right of your pic as the bonnet wont shut. I didn\'t bother with it but instead pulled the rubber piping down that touches on the bottom filter and tie rapped it a few mm further down. TBH the heat has still maganed to metal some of the plastic on the bottom filter but its not bad.

Good luck with it chap.

Rich :)

Nope :)

Pete, yours is the Power intake kit that comes as part of the Apexi GT-spec intercooler kit - it uses replacement (hard) piping to fit the stock turbos with the GT-spec front mount in place; Rich has the normal (intended for use with stock intercooler) Power intake kit which retains flexible piping...

Pete - If you don\'t mind me asking roughly how much did it cost to go single and did all go smoothly ?
What sort of figures are you running now ?

Rich :)

Post by: PETE SMITH on May 18, 2005, 10:13:03 AM
Hi Rich,
It\'s difficult to quote an exact figure as going single involves quite a few other bits n bobs as alterations.
The actual GT35R turbo kit-approx £2500 + labour
Then sundries that can occur at the same time or after fitting:
Upgraded plugs/leads, turbo beanie, exhaust wrap, boost controller, upgraded clutch as more power may make the current one slip!!

My last Dyno was around 380/390 fwhp ie the usual quoted output of a car--Though i\'ve had it ported since-just street mind as regularly driven!

Problems since single
-a few oil leaks-sorted
-warped flange between comp and downpipe-sorted with V-band
-knocking pipe under footwell-to be sorted with engine brace.

Nothing major-i expect niggly problems when you make changes!

Once a single\'s in your thoughts, you\'re gonna succumb to it in the end...unless you sell your Rexy!
Pete:)

Cheers Pete Thanks for the info.
For the moment I\'m quiet happy with the twins as their putting out some decent power. If I do get the single bug big style I\'d probably look to sell and buy one thats already done.

Hi Guys,

Sorry to drag this one back up (thought it better than start a fresh one ;) )

I have the same kit and also seem to have a cow under the bonnet!  I have fitted the bung into the pipe right next to the air pump (not the air pump pipe itself!)

I\'ve fitted an Apexi kit last week and also have some bovine-based noises.

Am I right in thinking that the air-pump pipe can be disconnected from the filter and the filter capped/blocked to remove this noise? Is there any problems with doing this?

Cheers, Chris

Not sure if this helps you but I have my airpump still plummed in with the feed to the filters cause I still have both of my cats in place.

Post by: rotis23 on January 09, 2006, 10:36:39 PM
Yeah - I also still have both cats. I was talking about disconnecting the air pipe to the filter (rom the air-pump) to stop the mooing - not sure if that\'s the preferred solution.

Ah, ok I see - I wasn\'t even sure what was causing it!  I thought i may have the metal insert in the wrong pipe!

Mmmmm, so there is nothing we can do about the noise then?

If i remember correctly, there were 2 bungs..that is metal cylinders with central holes....that needed correct pipe insertion..please don\'t ask me which pipes they went in at this time of night!!
I\'m sure i posted a very old thread on this..i guess it needs a search by someone!

What are these metal inserts then? Do you have a photot Ricco? Did it/they come with the kit?

Is the other option disconnecting the air-pump to the cat?
Title: Induction Kit Help
Post by: Ricco_04 on January 10, 2006, 05:06:47 PM
I had just the 1 metal insert/bung which is made of aluminium with a small hole through it (i guess its just like a restrictor.)

I have the newer version of the kit - 2 aliminium hardpipe\'s,  the 2 cones, 2 gaskets (where the filters couple up to the hardpipe\'s couples) 2 brackets to mount the filters to the car and all bolts, washers and nuts.

I have put the metal insert into the pipe next to the air-pump (im not sure if this is correct?)  On the picture you have the filler cap then the air pump pipe and then the next pipe is the one whereI have put the bung.  Here is the pic again just in case :

I dont have a photo of the insert but it is a piece of silver aliminium about 2 1/2cm long by 2cm diameter with a small hole through the length.

i like cows, but only when theyre in connection to steak  :flamed , NOT when theyre in my bay! i have the same problem with my Blitz SUS kit!!!! so i basically need to either fabricate something to restrict the increased air intake for the air pump! right, ok, down to flipping Pirtec i guess to see what i can put in-line to cure my madcowness!!!! :Grrr

hi bob, fancy meeting you here!   :wave  so ur air pump just stopped? at a guess, maybe it was getting too much air and gave up the ghost??

did you see in the "meets" section theres a meet in brissle later this month. you up for it???

gonna see about new sparks tomorrow as soon as i figure out what ones i need again!

cheers

Do you not need the airpump to protect your cat\'s untill they are warm or something (i probably sound a bit stupid there :Giggle  )  or is it there purley just to dilute emissions?

But why should you have to disconnect it - the kit is designed so that it incorporates the air pump - there are loads of these kits fitted and only a few with mad cow desease so surely we have something wrong?

I\'m not going to disconnect the air-pump from the exhaust - just the air-pump pipe from the apexi filter. I guess it really needs one of those restrictors that you have in the other pipe (wrongly?) but I don\'t have one.

They closed the smellophane factory?! Dam this cruel world!
Title: Induction Kit Help
Post by: Efini82 on January 11, 2006, 04:35:51 PM
but if you disconnect the pipe altogether wont the air pump get even more air!? cant blank it off cuz it wont get the air that it needs to send to the cat (meeeow)

ive found an adaptor and stuck that down the pipe to see if that makes any difference in a sec.

closing celophane was a bad thing really as sh*tloads of people lost their jobs, but hey ho, life needs to go on!  btw, im not from here either. family moved her to be clsoer to family. born in croydon!

Was talking about blanking [now unconnected] air filter pipe rather [now unfiltered] air pump pipe - don\'t know what affect this will have - maybe someone with prior knowledge can tell us?
Title: Induction Kit Help
Post by: PETE SMITH on January 11, 2006, 11:38:02 PM
If you\'re blanking the air-pump, then consider removing it plus the standard cat and replacing the latter with a high-flow cat if you stick to twin-turbo setup.
Will remove this cow-issue!!-thought the only down-side is probable change in idle revs.
This is where modification escalates!-i.e. Having an Apexi power FC Commander, makes this alteration easier.
Oh, i\'m not a real expert, just talking from chronic FD ownership! :Talking1

Have you blanked/blocked the now unconnected pipe as I\'m guessing you\'ll have unfiltered air entering the intake?
Title: Induction Kit Help
Post by: Rich Cheung on January 13, 2006, 01:59:26 PM
I put the metal restrictor bung into the same pipe Ricco 04 did and this stopped the mooing. It was a very tight fit and had to be hammered home.

Also on the bottom filter (one nearest headlight) I connected both the larger and smaller pipes. When I went to WGT for Apexi and decat fitting he disconnected the smaller pipe leaving it open to the atmosphere.
I don\'t know why but I\'ve not had any probs in 6K miles. I\'ll try and take a photo this weekend to show what I mean.
