I am sure these cars are heavy old beasts, 2625lbs as standard, thats 1190KG, too much in my books.
I need to improve my power to weight ratio, i have stopped eating pies and now my car needs to do the same.
What can be removed to make it lighter apart from the spare tyre, i still want it to be useful not remove the rear seats.
is yours a TII or EGi??
TII try and find a convertible bonnet, rare as mammoth sh!t,
carpets? power steering pump?? :p de-cat and get rid of air pump? not much really if you arent willing to remove the rear seats,
not too clued up on EGis though, probably the same stuff,
regards
Patrick,
it\'s still all about pro\'s & cons thou or more specifically what do you want?
Sound deadening is a key weight you can in theory get rid of if you dont mind stripping & removing this result thou is more noisy car what are you prepared to loose in yer bid for less weight while staying "usable"?
Si
the gains from sound deadening removal are minimal. Did the full floorpan on the 323 and it probably weighed about 2-3Kg The reason it is removed is to aid the car preperation
big weight saving ideas
Windows weigh a lot as do the winders etc., remove all the glass bar the windscreen (its stuctural) and replace with fixed perspex.
Interior trim and seats - bin the lot and fit some bucket seats.
If you are going really extreme a pure drag or race car needs very little other than an engine, chassis and running gear. Lights, wiring looms, dash, heater, battery, power steering etc. etc. are all big gains.
wieght reduction is a good thing and i believe in it compleatly. i had every intention of doing it to my car BUT.. now i increased the power so it is a VERY fast car i am thinking of keeping it all in as it improve\'s the quality of the car. that is to say its still nice and warm and quite inside.
my advice is put the 13b-rew in with a single turbo.:rollin
Its not a turbo II, i need to still carry 4 peope in my car if i need to, basically its the main reason i didn\'t get a plain 2 seater.
The engine i have in it weighs about 100lbs more than the regular N/A rotary lump, i need to readdress the balance.
It puts out in standard form 165bhp, and 201lb-ft of torque, so its got some grunt, but i am planning to take it up the drag strip as well, so i need to give myself as much advantage as i can.
well theres no way you can strip 100lbs out the back of the car without going silly. I recomend removing the ****ed on lump from under the bonnet :rollin
It could be worse, i could have used a heavy ford V8 engine, but its cast and not too heavy.
When finished should have about 280lb-ft of tourqe with only 220bhp.
Even with the added weight it should propel it along nicely :D
Your biggest weight save will come from replacing the rear screen with a perspex item. (These are available from a few of the stateside and JDM tuning shops.)
Other than the glass and the bonnet (if its steel) you wont save much weight anywhere else on the car. You could go for lighter alloy wheels (compomotive are good) but they are expensive and will only gain you a few Kg\'s.
Mmmmm nice big ally block rover V8 c/w holley 4 barrel carb
more free flowing exhaust header and you got any easy 250+bhp
there\'s no substitute for cubes! plus the exhaust burble gives me goose bumps!
Thats what i have on mine, i was going to get some stage 2 heads, just a bit short of cash after the conversion, it will have to wait for another day.
Any idea on the perspex screens? How much do they cost?
So did you do the engine swap yourself? if so then what happened to the original engine? Post up a few photos of it for the mob:D
Good luck., michael.
I didn\'t do the swop myself, i bought the car with a V8 lump in it, but it was bodged, the Headgasket had gone and it was a 125bhp low comp range rover engine.
Due to the bits that needed doing i gave it to a mechanic who basically because the conversion was done so poorly originally had to rip out everything.
I bought a new V8 with carbs, cams etc...
And got him to put it all together and pur it in, but there have been loads of problems, like the wiring loom being completely cut to shreds, and engine mounts that were almost non existant, down pipes that were blowing (new ones need to be made).
The list goes on with this car, plus all the little touches, like making sure everything is neat and removing all the bits of junk that isn\'t needed.
Car should be back in a few weeks i hope, then i need to sort out the bonnet issue (see other post :D ) and i am good to go.
