I really like the mazda rx7\'s and my dad has got an impreza sti type r which I will be having when the time comes, I want to sell this and by a rex for about 6k which means it will probably an import around 94 reg.
Anyone been in the same situation in which they hav the funds to buy one? had any problems with running the car or insurance etc, anything will help. thanks in advance
I had a 2nd Gen RX7 as my second car, before that i had an X reg 999cc orange which was the worst car ive ever driven.
I would strongly discourage having a 3rd gen rx7 as your first car, not because of lack of driving skill etc, but because of the temptation to drive too fast, and rx7s are not forgiving cars in any weather, i managed to put my 2nd gen rex into a wall showing off, and that really brought my driving down to earth, although its hardly the kind of experience youd want with your first pride and joy, its much better to gain some experience with a car thats less cherished than an rx7 would be.
Just my opinion though:cool
yea its understandable. The subaru would probably be better for me as it is 4wd. i might keep the scoob for about 6 months n get used to it all then might switch to 3rd gen rx7. thanks mate
well worth the wait m8, i got a bit of rear wheel practice in my mr2 turbo but the rex is a beast compared to that. :bandit
I got my rex when i was 20 and i think that was a bit too early, even though i had a lot of driving experience (i used to do 70k a yr). You need to really ground yourself not to show off and do something stupid.
Save that for when your own!:D minus the stupid bit that is....
wouldn\'t the insurance be more than the car lol :)
never mind all that i hope you have s small countries budget for runnign costs & insurance. How old are you if i may pry? i Had relatively cr4p car for the first couple of years (nice little 205) then went for a UK scooby which while i\'d been saving for a couple of years & had a good budget for buying i didnt really realise how expensive performance cars (OK & the inevitable modding) were

Either way on a type R scooby in grp 20 yer guna be in for a large portion of bung hole selling to fund it. Fair play if you can afford all that & good luck to you, the type R will be a bit better of an education in RWD future ownership as at least you have adjustable diff so more power going to rear wheels. Great cars IMO so as i say if you can afford it then enjoy.
Basically try & get as good an idea as possible about how much it\'s going to cost if you can afford a couple of k insurance, a few k for servicing & what a good £1 every 5 miles or so for fuel & well party time

Si
Yea its beginnin to sound like im better off with the scooby type R which i am either gonna hav to pay 2k for the insurance or drive 3rd party (not best option).
Im feeling at an advatage to most people as all i have to do is save up for insurance on the car instead of having to buy a car aswell so it may be possible.
Im 16 now and just a few months away from 17 and have not stopped talkin about a first car since i was 12! Family says im driving them crazy :reallymad
thanks for the helpful responces so far!
i doubt anyone would insure at 17 m8, if they did you would have to go fully comp.
& good luck with 2k on the type R i was paying £1500 on a standard UK un at 24 with 2 years NCB (http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/contrib/blackeye/Eyecrazy.gif)
Si
17 and can get insurance for 2k on a scooby thats brilliant mate, just be carefull even though the cars 4wd doesnt mean its impossible to make a mistake ;)
well its gonna be my dad with me as 2nd driver. we live in a fairly good area so its fairly good!
I have driven proffesionally for the last 25 years and would strongly suggest that the rex is not a first car. Although it is by far the most enjoyable vehicle to drive, bar NONE it is also the most difficult, and i\'m sure a lot of people on this forum will admit to writing off their first car, including me, and that was only a moggy thou.
yeah wouldn\'t really advise it either but if the chap or chapess can afford it & has serious self restraint then good luck to them.
On the insurance front thou (Si feels old

cause he\'s going into dad mode now) i would consider the doing on dads insurance thing as being only a good short term measure. I recall talk of them trying to clamp down on this & personally i think earning NCB is invaluable i know a few folks who did this with their first cars & now still haven\'t got a chance of getting, at least affordable, insurance on a performance car. Anyway that\'s all fiscal stuff really so that\'s for you to decide what works best for you.
Good luck & most importantly stay safe!!
Si ( i remember when i was a boy.........

lmao)
LoL, I\'ve got a 3rd Gen as a first car :D:D:D And I\'m only 19 :D:D
And I only pay £1280 a year on insurance :D:D:D
It is probably not what you want to hear but personally I wouldn\'t get either performance car as my 1st car.
You\'d be best off getting a lowered powered car and insuring it under your own name.
1. You will build up your NCB (provided you don\'t have to claim) until such time as your not getting raped too much by the insurance company.
2. You will be getting valuable driving experience in probably a safer car.
I know if I had either an RX or Scooby as my 1st car it would have ended in tears.
Weve all had prangs. I\'ve written off 3 cars (all bangers) all before I hit 20 and I was gutted each and every time.
Gradually progressing to more powerful cars has certainly made me have a lot more respect for them and not be tempted to race when its not safe. If I\'d had either car at 17 I probably wouldn\'t have seen 18.
Sorry for putting the dampers. Good luck with your future car ownership and drive safely.
Rich :)
I know everyone always promotes the sensible decision, driving under your dads insurance is a bit dodgy and not looked on too favourably by the insurance company come claim time, no build up of NCB, and the dangers of no driving experience etc etc ........
that said but if you were 17 and had a way of driving a high powered sports car, not having to drive a sh*tbox and being the envy of all your mates. Wouldn\'t you do it ?!
I agree with Rich.
I think the insurance companies have it right regarding young drivers [wait for the flame]. I\'m speaking not only from my own experience as a young driver [many years ago] but that of my son\'s first few years of driving.
No matter how \'sensible\' you think you\'ll be you can\'t just get into any car like this and begin to comprehend what is happening between your engine, your tyres and the road.
I don\'t think any insurer with touch you and as a parent I wouldn\'t risk my NCB by putting my son on my policy. I\'m also very suprised your family are supprting you.
Not what you want to hear but I would hate to read that you had a bad accident in an RX and I hadn\'t put my point of view.
John
Just like to say i have just brought a 3rd gen i love it, yeah it drinks like a fish, and you do have to respect it in the wet. But the sheer driving experience and joy you get out of it are unbelievable. will say though you are very young and temptation to showing off is high, just remember as well as being a very powerful car it is also one of the mostsexy looking cars ever made so show it off not show off!
thanks alot si. I was thinking of haveing another real crappy car with group 1 insurance and insuring that and only taking it now and again and building my ncb on that.

Absolutely spot on. Common sense is just so, well, er, common! ;)
You wouldn\'t be the envy of all your mates when they are standing round your graveside.
Just look how many RX\'s the club has lost in recent months that were being driven by ppl with driving experience.
Sorry I still think it\'s a stupid idea.
I would be interested to see if anyone would insure [even as a named driver] anyone who is 17 with no driving experience and if so at what cost.
Is there anyone here who didn\'t have a prang or two in the first couple of years driving.
John
[AKA grumpy old man]:D
Hehe, everyone condemns young drivers, im only 23 and i know im a better driver than most people out there, mainly because not only do i enjoy driving but i care about my car (whatever im driving) and i feel very responsible for my actions on the road, driving fast or driving a fast car doesnt necessarily mean your going to have an accident. :o
Theres a big difference between taking risks with your own well being and putting other people in danger because of your own carelessness/lack of skill/irresponsibility/sheer idiocy, there are just as many people who cause horrific accidents due to driving around with the wrong attitude, being arrogant or even driving a **** car that doesnt brake/steer or do anything well, just because they want to "Get from a-b" and consider driving to be a mundane thing that requires little effort.
The amount of people ive sat ina car with and noticed how poor their driving is, regardless of age, its all down to the person, and tbh having your first car as an rx7 is nothing todo with age, as im sure a 50y/o would be just as excited and tempted to be reckless as an 18y/o would be if an rx7 was their first car, as everyone knows how exciting it is when you pass your test etc.
/Rant Over
:cool
Quoteand tbh having your first car as an rx7 is nothing todo with age
But it has everything to do with experience.
I wonder why the isurance companies group them at 20 mmmmm?
I\'m sure a 17 year old who had been karting since he was 7 would be an excelent driver.
However put someone who has just past their test probably in a front wheel drive car in an Rx with around 300 bhp to the back wheels in the wet and.......................
You think it makes sense?
as someone who managed to do the ellusive (or maybe not so) crashing of RX7 having never had any even fender benders in the previous 4 years driving experiances it does as above enforce the idea that these cars need ultimate respect, yeah OK & i\'m sheet (got that in before you lot start :p lol). All valid points & personally i still feel strongly about any new owners irrelevant of age experaince etc getting on a track or such like & if not under instruction at least learn the limits in safety :god
Si
Experience only accrues if you learn, as far as i can see age doesnt seem to make you a better driver, e.g just because youve rowed a boat all your life doesnt make you able to sail a yacht immediately. :p
Johnf, i dont look at the car n say im gonna race people on the roads, if i wanted to race, the subaru would beat most on the road, i want the rex cuz there jus gorgeous to look at! I think of it like this, having a high powered car isnt about drivin it fast, its about drivin it at normal speed limits but just knowing you got the power under the hood if you want it.
p.s. I can control my foot (most times ;) )
OK I\'m by no means an old miserable old git (my g/f may say differently) but like John said unless you\'ve had good driving experience from an early age steping into an RX7 as your first car is asking for trouble.
Fly - I also agree age doesn\'t make you a good driver. I guess it depends on how much you enjoy driving and if you learn from mistakes and any tuition you may have had.
Back to my first paragraph if you havent any proper driving experience don\'t just step into a performance car cos it will bite you in the ass at some point and if you don\'t know what to do it normally ends in tears.
Back to the red wine now he he. I\'m really not a kill joy just don\'t want ppl to get hurt.
Rich

Poor bloke, i think he originally meant this post to be about servicing and runnings costs!
Opinions are like assholes among rex drivers it seems :)
Mate im not being a tw*t, but comon think this thru logically for starters no1 is gona insure you unless your at least 21 trust me i know! and how are you gona pay for it even if they do(id like to know who btw) have you thought of fuel bills? not to mention speeding tickets fines etc, i can pretty much safely say that im the youngest FD owner on here and iv got experience with performance cars since a very early age and moved up gradually, im not saying im the most experienced or the most skilled but i know how to drive!
An extract from yesterdays METRO "Four teenagers have been killed in a car crash. They died when their ford fiesta collided head-on with a volvo on the A92, near eden bridge, Fife, on monday night and ploughed into a field. The exact cause of the crash is not yet known. But police said initial inquiries \'support the theory that speed was a significant factor\' The victims were apprentice plumber craig lawson 12, college student steven garland, 17 and 16 year old school pupils mona and lisa holliday."
This was only a ford fiesta, imagine the scence including an RX7
A FD for a kid ur age wud be the worst idea in the history of bad ideas...for starters have you ever driven a rear wheel drive car before? my litl bro bought a BMW 316 coupe last tuesday without telling any1 its got full m3 kit and alloys etc so anyway hes been driving for 5 months and on the way home at the m62 roundabout at cleckheaton he lost it and crashed into the pavement! wrecking his alloys and front bumper! this is a 1600cc 100bhp car ffs!!!! compare that with a 300bhp rwd rx7!!!
Ok you might think that he might just be a bad driver ok so what thats not the point and if you dont get the point then you definatley shouldnt be driving a rx7.
Sorry just my thoughts but i dont think any1 has the "courage"(if its the right word to use) to say it without offending you, im not trying to be a tw*t but evry1 reading this thread will be thinking the same thing and seen as though im young aswell i thought i should be the one to say it!
At the end of the day its your money its your life you do what you feel you want to do but think it through logically before you do
Rixio:wave
haha, ive been go kartin, rally drivin school and stuff like that, thats what i mean. Im no muppet risking losing my license before i have it!!! :)
Nice words rixio. Im not going to drive like a nut no matter what car i am in. I "think" im a sensible person for my age and thats no lie.
The reason i thought i would get insured is because someone on another forum said they went from a subaru impreza to a rex and the insurance was cheaper so if i can get a quote on the scoob i dont see why not on the rex.
The subaru would be easier to control, but then again so would the rex if i am obiding by the speed limits dont you think? My dad would also be driving which ever car i have so thats the bills n fuel issue sorted :D.
Must say, everyone so far has been nothing but great help! cheers guys! :wave
yeah that\'d be me elsewhere :god lol
The insurance thing i should add was primarily down to being able to get the classic car insurance thing on a RX7 although the main deals involve being over 25, being garaged, limited milage & having a second car. So not a total like for like comparison but i\'m still paying less on my rex & a mondeo than i was on the scoob alone so it is accurate.
Dunno if you\'d be able to get classic car insurance on an >10 year old car which might not require you to be over 25 etc (the deals we have to get classic car ins dont need car to be over 10 years old)
As previously thou insurance is always guna rape you if it\'s getable on a group 20 car (as both type R & RX7 are) at any especially such a young age (sorry to keep harping on about that but it is a key factor :rollin )
Si
ive already thought about that. The subaru can go for about 11k and if i get a rex for about 7-8k, surely that should pay for insurance for a year and any left over will go to servicing, fuel etc.
I thought I would add my twopeneth (an expression used by old people):p to this as I used my Rex on a daily commute and intend to again.
This is just a question of economics surely. Insurance shouldn\'t be a problem so long as your willing to pay for it. After all I bet Wayne Rooney doesn\'t drive around in a 1.0l VW polo...! Money is a great Persuader.
Now I imported my rex 18months ago. I paid £7000 for a \'92 example (cause you don\'t need a cat!). I paid £1000 for sercurity of which I will get no money back on that... The value of the car is somewhat subjective as they have all been modified and the engines are in differing conditions - however lets assume that a \'92 example will cost £5000 and already have adequate sercurity on it.
Lets also assume that the engine will last you 60,000m before it needs replacing and that you travel 12,000 miles per year (i did in my rex and I enjoyed every single one of them) - for the sake of argument lets also assume that you intend to keep the car for 5 years. Lets also assume you pay cash for the car and don\'t get a loan so will not pay interest...
Now, I got an average of 18MPG from mine on dual carridge ways and motorways on the way to work and back...
12,000 miles/year will burn 670 gallons (3041 litres) of Optimax. I paid an average of 82p/litre (oh them were the days...) it\'s closer to 92p/litre now... so that\'ll cost you £2798/year or £230/month
Insurance... I paid £1200 or £120/month once I paid the interest on the installments - this was not a classic policy as they all restrict you to a limited milage.
Wear on the engine... Now a decent engine rebuild will cost £4000 - we\'d assumed you would get another 60,000 - so in 5 years you would have burnt another £66/month not to mention the oil changes and spark plugs. Other wear on the car we should leave to one side but to say that tyres arn\'t free and any wheel bearings or brake pads/disc etc also cost a bomb.
Tax will cost £18/month
And the depreciation in the car over the 5 years - Judging by turbo 2 prices now, and with the 4th gen RX7 on the way - which will hit 3rd gen residual values hard, I think you could probably wave goodbye to the total value of the car - another £83/month. If you have to take out a loan to buy the car then thats even worse!
So far we have a monthly total of £517/month... Scaring you yet!
Now for go faster goodies - well lets not go there. Any money spent will be worthless when you come to sell anyway. Spend £1000 on a vented bonnet and that is just gone. you\'ll never see it again...
So now your paying £517/month just for the pleasure of driving a rex... don\'t get me wrong it\'s quite a pleasure... but what else could your money be doing?
Well in 5 years in a cash account (paying 5% yearly) you could have ernt £4975 in interest alone with your total bank balance being the best part of £36,000.
Enough to buy a 4th gen RX7 cash!
Now consider using the money to buy your first house... Dull I know but follow the logic on this one... Previously house prices were going up at 20%/year. this is unrealistic but lets say that it levels off an you get 2% growth per year for the next 5 years...
£500/month will get you an £85,000 mortgage. Ok so the house may not be the biggest and the you may not be able to afford to live in it but hey... rent it out. You cover your costs... Now your 2% growth in the housing market has just ernt you £7,000 and if you\'ve rented the house out it has cost you next to nothing...
So why do I drive one daily...
Well it is a nice car, and it is very enjoyable, but I\'m 34 years old, have a Msc in electronic engineering and cycled to work for 7 years because I didn\'t have 2 brass farthings to rub together. (another expression used by old people :p ). I saved my money and now have 2 houses here and 1 abroad, am safely into the higher tax bracket and the costs of running the car still make me wince!!!
I don\'t want to sound patronising but save your money - get an education - take a gap year then work your guts off, Change jobs every 2 years, don\'t have kids and spend on long term investments as in this consumer world someone willing to put the work in with an eye on the long term will be o.k.
Now I have a feeling that this will get flamed on here but oh well!!!
Mike
I think that is a great explaination of the costs involved.
Im glad ive got mine as a 2nd car on a classic policy if that is the costs involved in owning a FD and driving 12k a year.
BUT:
I dont think common sense has a lot to do with it when your local ( and very friendly) bank assistant is willing to snare you with any level of loan. And then rip you off for years to come.
Mike, i had to read that about 3 time to understand it:confused: . Very helpful i agree. I understand the stuff your saying about saving the cash but i dont really wnat to be thinking about anything beyond university yet. Youve got me all confused now :(, sounds as if your all screaming "keep the scoob" to me, am i correct or have i lost it!
fookin ell anyone wana buy me FD (http://www.clicksmilies.com/s0105/lachen/laughing-smiley-017.gif) lol
Si
Just a point of view... When I was 17 I used to run around in my dads Porche 944. That was great for a while too.
Personally I wouldn\'t touch a scooby and I prefer rear wheel drive. You do have to be careful especially if you have been used to front wheel drive but... and this is sad... I have been play need for speed underground 2 on my PS2 and that is quite good for handling traits.
You will lose more power through the transfer box with a 4wheel drive so hp on the tarmac will be less.
A guy a work has a WRX and he drives like a nutter on roads I would dream of putting the rex through it\'s paces on. Maybe thats just me though.
The rex is lower and as we all know driving sensation is through your ass!
hehe..the fd`s look like remote control cars compared to the URABUS..oops..:D i mean SUBARU
definitly sexier!!
yea they are, but then you gotta consider that the subaru is more practical so u can take more than just 1 mate out.

Thats the beast from the east which is an alternative to the rex.
correction..1 mate and 2 midgets!!!:D
haha nice 1. you lot av got me thinkin both ways now, subaru or rx7,
It\'s your decision what to do (funding permitting) at the end of the day mate.
BUT (you knew that was coming)
I hope you don\'t go for an RX or the Scoob.
You are very young, this is not a slight on you, but you will not control your right foot. If people on here are honest, we all have lapses. And the car doesn\'t forgive lapses, even when you\'re not pushing it. - trust me I know from bitter experience.
The insurance thing is bollocks. You WILL be dangerous. That is why they will ask you for a lot of money to insure it.
I personally don\'t much care if you can afford it, you choose the risks that you take but being on the road in a powerful car, there are other people around you at risk who did not have that choice. You could kill yourself and/or someone else and you don\'t want that on your conscience.
I can\'t believe that your family is in agreement with this.
For what it\'s worth, here\'s my constructive suggestion.
Get a \'normal\' car first. If you can go MR2, MX5, something like that then you get some RWD experience. Ask your dad if he\'ll let you take the Scoob or an RX for track use ONLY.
Learn how to drive in the right environment.
The first time you lose the car on track, and you will do so, think what would have happened if you had misjudged something on the roads. Yes tracks are faster but your judgement has to be just as good on the roads as there is less space and margin for error.
I don\'t mean to pi55 on your parade, but I don\'t want you to kill me or anyone else I know, including yourself! If you claim to be mature and responsible then prove it by making a wise decision and not jumping into a car like this without experience.
i understand. A smaller, less quick car has been on my mind for the reasons you just pointed out. you migh tall get a bit peeved with me for asking this but what suggestions do you have then because i want something a bit nippy but not life threatening. I was thinking of something like a 98reg civic type R or 95reg integra type R. Bet you all like :reallymad now.....sorry! It was sharks fault! ;)
My 2 peneth from the younger end of things (I bought and rebuilt mine when I was 20 whilst still at university). The FD can be driven normally/slowly/at the speed limit and if this is done then you would run no higher risk of death than from driving any other car.
There the problem lies, great for preserving life, but kind of defeats the purpose of owning the car.
Then there really is the cost, there is just so much of it! I would seriously say wait until you can really afford it. I am almost certain you would not get insured at 17, I tried all sorts to get that sorted.....ended up at £350 a month.
I am not making any point really, just saying it can be done, it is a lot of fun, but you do either need to be able to drive beyond your years or be mature significantly beyond your years....or the second your mate in the passenger seat asks you to lamp it, you will, and you will end up wrapping it, which has many cosequences.
Its roundabouts that seem to be the perennial reality check for so many people.

- Golly these cars are mighty quick, but I’m planning some modifications that will make it quicker. Currently I cannot drive it.

- These little devils are a tad hard to control if the weather is slightly inclement and tending toward precipitation.
I HAD A ABIT OFF ACTION WITH MY REX ON BLACK ICE WITCH I WAS GUTTD N MY CAR HAS BEEN OFF ROAD FOR THE PAST 3MONTH.
- I lost control of my Mazda RX7 3 month ago when I slipped on black ice. This has resulted in my car not being drivable in the intervening period.
EAZY TO DRIVE IN THE DRY U CAN PUSH IT AS MUCH AS U WANT N IT WILL STILL COME BACK IN.
- These mazda cars are very enjoyable to drive in the dry and you can drive very quickly without to much of a problem.

- It would be advisable, dear friend, to have these very temperamental cars checked by an expert before you exchange funds with the kind gentleman that would be selling the said vehicle. I got ripped off!
Communication is a wonderful thing!
;);)
Cheers Mike.
That makes sense now.
And welcome ZAB, It would be nice to see some pics of your FD if you have any before your black ice incident??

i understand. It was sharks fault! ;)
Just read my last post and that came out a lot more aggressive than I intended. - sorry for that.
As for suggestions, I would say MX5, MR2, at a stretch maybe 200SX in stock trim. I know that others on this board have graduated from each of these cars to their RX\'s and have an MX5 myself as a daily, because I just don\'t want to risk the RX in bad weather conditions again.
Civic and integra are both good cars but are front wheel drive, will get you used to the pace but not the handling. I;d suggest RWD if possible.
MR2 non turbo, and MX5 should be on the top of your list if you want rear wheel drive experience without 300HP to contend with, and the insurance worry.
Other models to take a look at might be:
BMW 3 series: a bit slower but they are RWD. not as much fun as an MX5 though.
Also why not look at a 2nd gen RX7 before going into a TT 3rd gen?
Take a quick look on autotrader and see what you think about prices, then have a look at insurance quotes and see how you go from there.
I havent read all the post but if I get the jist of it this is my response.
For a first car I wouldnt get a rex, they are too fast and therefore more likley to spin crash and result in injury even death. You need to get a normal car to start out with for 2 reasons, to get a feel for driving and get a feel for other trafic on the road.
After being on the road for 7 years now I have alot of experience with other drivers which has taught me alot, I admit when I was younger I used to love thrashing my cars about and I guess you will do the same, its nothing to be ashamed of we all do it, but a sports car like the rex will only end up in tears for someone.
Be sensible, get a normal car and if you want to drive a rex buy one and put it on the track but dont put it on a public road without some experience with other drivers
Im 24 and hopefully going to be buying a rex soon and I know its going to take a while to get used to the perfomance and handling but then I have experience on the roads so I know what to look out for.
Hope that helps and good luck with your decision
