Title: Dragon Circuit car
Post by: DRAGON on January 31, 2005, 03:05:53 PM
These are some of the latest pics from the camo car. This is going to be the new circuit demo FD for Dragon. It should be more relevant to most FD customers than the Drag car as it will be set-up for fast road and track use. I will update this thread as more modifications are carried out.
Thisirst pick shows how thefront support has been rmoved to allow more airflow for the custom V mount set-up. The fabricated alu bar allows the nose to still be mounted in the stock location.
Also so you can see that the font relay box has been removed, I am also moving the wriring loom and also hiding the two other fuse/relay boxes.

I am not making a kit to sell, just a one off. Although I would recommend them as a design, over the front mount.

Stacked out with work or sidetracked by Buttman :D :D :D

V-Mount looks pretty sweet though, are you planning on sticking in an adjustable splitter between the rad and IC?

I assume you\'re still keeping the fans for the rad, but do you still have room to mount the undertray or is that being removed?

Post by: DRAGON on December 23, 2005, 11:22:33 AM
Thanks Ant, that reminds me I owe you some cash!

I will be working on this one all over christmas, latest shots show weight reduction, and weight distribution mods.
Already have fuel tank built to go in the rear seats so decided to use it on this project, as the competition for circuit cars is going to be very serious next year, Norris etc, and we cant have the RX7s not being displayed to their full potential.
I have cut out the rear of the car past the turrets, this will be replaced with a lightweight frame for hold kit and diffuser. Design on the white board.
The fuel tank will sit in the rear seats, this will make for excelllent weight distribution. Echoing the engine which sits in approx the same position in comparison to the wheels.

Some people have been making negative comments recently, so if you feel like that please dont post on my thread, (Antinik and Carlos, etc).  Also I\'m sure what I am doing is not of interest to these people anyway.
For those that are interested all comments of positive or contructive critisism about the car will be gratefully recieved, the more the better as the car is still in the design stage to a certain extent.

Yes thats the plan, I want to fly the flag for the RX7. They seem to do very well in Japans Time attack.
We have Guru Gog Box etc now so have all the right ingredients, just need to start testing etc. I have a GT car racing driver that will drive it for me. But I would like to have a go myself first.

Got some work done over the weekend, test fitted the engine which allowed me to work out where the final chassis leg braces could go.
So just welded these in. Had to be careful not to get in the way of the Turbo/manifold.
Just about to make the final order for the fuel fittings. But we are way behind schedule, just want to get it out before the end of the year now.

Post by: AtomicRex on July 04, 2006, 04:46:04 PM
Personally I think Ross\' engineering skills are more show than technical.  The chassis hasn\'t been thought out using any knowledge of compression and tension mechanics....It looks far more like lets weld a bit of metal here and another bit over there.

But this is good, because I don\'t think the car will have a compliant chassis anymore.  As such, despite the fact your engine will be have more horses, the challenge is set for a circuit....which inherently has corners.  And this is where I believe the car wont work as well you think.

I\'m sure it would murder me on a drag strip; but on a circuit this car, I\'m sure, will be let itself down, but time will tell

No I did 2 years of a Mech Eng Degree before changing to Maths with Astrophysics.

I do agree that there are many ways to build something, but frankly I would sooner sit down with a book and understand the fundamental principles before even cutting and welding.  Having experienced this first hand, I am happy to criticise the work

As for trying I do agree, it\'s great Ross posts this up...

The over complication of the roll cage!

I cant believe that you\'ve actually sat down and worked out the design on paper prior to cutting and welding, when i was there even Monkey said that you were welding parts on just because you could!

So are you able to tell me when a join is in compression or tension?  I presume you\'ve thought about the way the loadings are going to translate through the chassis?  When understanding the type of force appropriate to each join, you would understand what gauge of metal to use, and whether the angle is correct.
Title: Dragon Circuit car
Post by: DRAGON on July 05, 2006, 09:02:07 AM
So your assumptions are based on the fact that you dont think I designed the cage? There are some fundamental rules to follow when designing a cage, you will obviously know of these with your extensive knowledge. As you presume mine is random then please point these out!

For your information I used various sources. One being Chassis engineering by Herb adams. And also Multibody Systems Approach to Vehicle Dynamics by Mike Blundel, which is far more involved, but very usefull. I also have the auto math handbook, which gives many formulas for weight ditribution/centre of gravity/weight transfere etc.

Its easy to criticise Jon, and I know your motivation is not positive. I would rather put my efforts into other posts too genuinely interested people, rather than responding to your assumptions.

Your overal theme is that you think this car will not work. And I am impressed that you have followed that up with £1000 bet. So as they say \'talk is cheap\'. Lets see how it goes at the track.
Title: Dragon Circuit car
Post by: AtomicRex on July 05, 2006, 09:14:35 AM
Ross, it is a shame that you didn\'t use these books when designing my roll cage!  There you made huge errors, and i am basing my judgement on these, as well as the fact you are putting bars in irregular places.   Why an earth did you put one that goes up the centre of the screen?  Having followed motorsport for many years I have never seen a bar like this.

Looking at the differences between your cage and mine, bearing in mind mine has been designed by a professional company and is FIA rated, yours is overly complicated....which leads me to believe that although you\'ve bought those books, they certainly weren\'t applied!  For one Ross you forget Ive met you, and personally I don\'t think you are capable of understanding the level of mathematics involved.  I know you are probably going to get this post removed by the mods, but I am only saying what I feel.

As for the bet....how about you name a price and I will match it....make it 5 figures instead???  Talk isn\'t cheap....I can back it up!

Looks good there Ross! As for the comments about the roll cage and chassis being/or not being well designed - those sort of comments should be explained for us mere mortals. Why (in laymans/basics technical speak) is this not a good design? Just because it isn\'t designed the same way as say Safety Devices design theirs does it mean that Ross is wrong? I\'m not actually siding with anyone here, just interested in what needs to be taken into account when designing a cage and chassis bracing?
Title: Dragon Circuit car

Personally think this thread is getting a little unpleasant....I don\'t agree with attempted public humiliation.....AtomicRex if you\'ve got grievences against Ross its probably better to take them up with him in person than use the forum in this way. I don\'t know Ross (other than seen him at RS3) but I think he is generally good for the Rotary scene and shouldn\'t be slurred publically in this way.

This is a brilliant thread and many people are watching it with interest, and i can see this thread ending up being closed, and we all lose out.! QuoteAdrian, Personally think this thread is getting a little unpleasant....I don\'t agree with attempted public humiliation.....AtomicRex if you\'ve got grievences against Ross its probably better to take them up with him in person than use the forum in this way. I don\'t know Ross (other than seen him at RS3) but I think he is generally good for the Rotary scene and shouldn\'t be slurred publically in this way.
Agree with Adrian

As I said, if critiscisms are to be made, let them be on a purely technical basis (with a full explaination as to why) I think that would benefit us all as we could learn from two views of people who are actually involved in building competetive cars. Keep the personal stuff out of the thread eh? Any issues that you may or may not have with Ross personally are best sorted out off the forum.

The mods really don\'t want to have to edit and/or close another thread - but we will if we have to.  AtomicRex, if you respond please keep your  slurs/grievances out of here.  Ross has been good enough to share his work with the forum and it is of interest to many here, he doesn\'t deserve AtomicRex\'s negative comments.

Atomicrex, you sound like a real know it all idiot quite frankly. If you had Ross put in a cage for you that you thought wasnt ok because you did an engineering degree, then why didnt you make that compaint, why did you have him do the work? More fool you pal.

Keep up the good work Ross, there are always internet warriors that know best, just ignore them.

So now you own a \'real race designed car\' well done, the medals in the post.

You guys make me laugh :rollin

Ross - I\'m really impressed with the work you\'re putting into your car and especially for sharing this with us on MRC.  Whilst I appreciate that it may not have been designed using the finest F1 mechanics and developed from the ground up from a carbon-fibre monocoque chasis, it certainly is a fine piece of engineering which ever way you cut the mustard.

I know you\'re knew here Atom, but this isn\'t the place to wash your dirty laundry.  There\'s a community that\'s been built up over many years and it\'s not usually adviseable to wade in the way you have if you want to make any friends.  It would also be nice to see some pics of the build up of your car as well if you have any?

Anyway, it\'s always good to see some friendly rivalry as ultimately this drives the rotary scene forwards here in the UK - which is why we\'re all in this club.  I look forward to seeing both cars in action.

I have spoken with both Ross and John ( Atomic Rex) today after receiving complaints about the personal nature of some of the posts on this thread.

As many of you know they are both embroiled in legal action toward each other so I have asked both to stay off of each others threads from now on as our members do not wish for the type of bitching we have all witnessed on this thread and both have agreed, Ross however would like it pointed out that he has already stayed away from John\'s threads and will continue to do so.

When an outcome of their problems is reached both will be allowed one post on a stand alone thread.

From what I have seen of Dragon on this site I can only say they are very innovative and have some fantastic products/cars.  Reading there posts gives you lots of idea\'s plus they seem to be quite active on this forum which is unusual and good!

I dont think it is fair when clients who have had "disagreements" with garages just post non-constructive crap when really if they have a problem they should speak direct instead of hiding behind a keyboard.

To be honest I think AtomicRex lost the argument when he posted:

Quote from: AtomicRexNo I did 2 years of a Mech Eng Degree before changing to Maths with Astrophysics.

I own a structural engineering business and did a mechanical engineering degree as abit of a side line, the only thing I can say is that it\'s a little bit of everything and a whole load of nothing and definately no where near good enough to start basing an argument about paths of structural loading in cross members.  Especially seeing though you didnt even finish the course????

I for one am really interested to see how ross\'s circuit car turns out, and hope he continues to post here with updates.

I only have one complaint about Dragon.... There too damn far away!!!! :)

Right despite saying I wouldn\'t post on Ross\' posts I will defend myself!

This is going to court where I am asking for a large sum of money back having paid out a fortune, and then having to spend a further fortune getting the redone having trailered it away from Ross.

I haven\'t hidden behind the keyboard as you\'ve suggested...I have spoken to Ross on numerous occasions and frankly got frustrated by Ross\' unwillingness to admit that he didn\'t understand many aspects of putting together a proper track/race car!

I don\'t think that I have lost the argument, as it is good to challenge the concepts rather than accept it on face value just because it looks good!  I wasn\'t using this post to slag Ross of in any way, merely giving an objective point.  A Minardi looks good in the flesh but crap out on a circuit!!!!  You are right I didn\'t finish the degree in Mech Eng....But I did swap to specialise in applied mathematics and finished that degree!

Maybe as Clive has already stated that we are going to go to court, you should lay off me!  Once the facts are out, then maybe you might sit up and realise what issues have gone on!  God if I had read about the problems I now know about I wouldn\'t have ever gone near him, and saved myself an awful lot of money!!!

Gah!

Ross are any of the structural strengthening mods going to appear on your stock list some time in the future if they work out? Or maybe bolt-in versions of the things you are currently welding in? I\'ve always thought the bar that the battery sits on is too flimsy to do anything useful but the whole chassis might benefit from a little more strength in that place...

Andy K, We will have a 3 way strut-brace for retail sales very soon.

Latest Pic of the fuel tank finally installed, its been difficult to get everything to fit, but know it is finally bolted in so I can start routing out the fuel lines etc. The fuel system is pretty special. Makes the drag car set-up look quite archaic! I have tried to keep it as simple as possible, whilst still retaining enough cc\'s for the engine.
I would love to put this much time into Drag car, but struggling to find enough time to finish this one!

Army of Scrutineers will come to you cos I\'ve done the same as your tank and advised me to make a safe box to enclosed the fuel tank/fuel pumps or sheet of ally to cover front of the  roll cage as act like the firewall between yourself and fuel tank.
Silly question:- have you got MSA\'s blue book?.

The car is not designed specifically for competition use. The original idea, was just to build something for myself. However there are many race and track cars that use internal fuel cells without firewalls. And if I do want to compete with this car, it would be possible to create a firewall, between the cockpit and the cell.

Would\'nt the pick ups be better lower down/ or on the bottom of the tank, also in case of a impact would the tank crack along the welds?
It may be worth building another one and testing it in an impact??

The pick-ups are at the lowest point, they are restricted by the the chassis. Although internally they go to the base of the tank.
The tank is a complex shape, so its not really economical to build another one and test it to destruction!

Extravagant cage? Yeah heard that one before, getting boring now.
I\'m not particularly interested in justifying it. I could post up many pictures of more extravagant cages, in world rally cars, touring cars and generally most serious race cars. The reason you dont see these cages all the time, is because the limiting factor is the generally the customers budget. They are very time consuming to design and build, different tube thickness, dia, location, gussets, shear plates etc.

I have tested\\setup\\engineered many race cars over the years. Some cars give you an immediate feeling of being safe when you see it for the first time, some you diont even want to get in.
Your car Ross, just gives me the gut feeling of being SAFE....:D
You can NEVER over engineer a safety device.I have stuck many a car in the armco at quite a rate of knots, the upsetting thing is you can watch a sissy rollcage fold under the impact........this in turn hurts you even more as the safety shell shifts around and takes you with it...

sorry if I\'m being thick but I\'ve not seen anything on suspension set up, being a circuit car I\'m intrigued to know what your going for, how low you are gonna let it drop and how firm you plan to set it up.

Looking very cool Ross!

I read that you\'ve removed the twin oil coolers, which made me think of some great result\'s with brake ducting when I had my Exige... A guy there opened the two front vents (like on the RX for the oil coolers(, and ducted the vents to the inside of the disc\'s. Now the bit he had done differently was the bells he had made up were closed to the out side so the vented air from the front had no choice but to go through the veins in the discs.

It worked really well, he\'d stay out until he ran out of petrol (pretty much an hour or so solid) and could use EBC Greenstuff pads (which normally dis-integrated after a 20 minute track session) as the temps never got that high! May be worth a look. But I guess you\'ve already thought along these lines ;)

I did have some brake ducts made up, but have ditched them in favour of something similar to what you are talking about. The plan at the moment is to just get the car running, and then adjust cooling issues that arise from there.
I have just fitted the rear lights. I chose to not use the standard lights, but to go for some all in one units and wire them into the standard loom. They weigh less than the factory ones, and also I have mounted them lower for better weight distribution :)
We have also fibreglassed in the factory light holes on the RE light cover, I would have preferred to have smoothed it over, but time is a limiting factor.

Hi Ross,
Are those lights at road legal height and position? Or is this car not going to be road legal?

I havent checked if they are high enough. If they are too low I can just move them up. Its not like I have to ESVA the car or anything.
The car will be road legal.

The tyres are Falken, although I will probably be using the toyos this year.

Dunlop D01J or D02J, also Yokohama A032R and A048R, Toyo R888 - all these are soft compound lightley treaded tyres.
Usually available in a variety of compounds. All of them will wear very quickly. Don\'t expect much more than a couple of thousand miles of road use. I use to wear a set of A048R\'s out in a single race season - or less than 400 miles.

Work better than a normal road tyre in damp conditions if you have got the tyres warm and the presures set correctly. Aquaplane very easily when the water is heavy/puddled due to the lack of drainage.
Hopeless in winter as the rubber does not get warm and soft enough to work.

All these tyres usually work better with an increase in static negative camber on the wheels. If the outside tyre edge is going blue it means they are being overheated and more static negative camber is needed.

Post by: McCARTHY on January 04, 2007, 11:01:26 AM
and there you go. It was the D02J i belive i was using pricey compared to the yoko\'s and toyo\'s but very very good indeed. Its funny how some people seem to spend loads of money on coilovers and roll bars, bushes etc but then get Cheap (i.e. not quailty) tyres and never really get the full effect of the cars potential. A huge difference can be made even in stock configuration with good tyres and i don\'t nessessarily mean a cut slick types

Post by: TonyC on January 04, 2007, 11:47:43 AM
I found the price difference between the Dunlop\'s and Yoko\'s wasn\'t worth while. I could run the same lap times on the A048R\'s as the Dunlops. And Dunlops were slightly trickier in the wet.

Post by: McCARTHY on January 04, 2007, 11:57:38 AM
i must say that i havn\'t used the yoko\'s, maybe i\'ll give them ago. i found the dunlops better than the R888 tho had more grip to get the power down out of corners.

Just made some supports for the RE light cover, the mountings are not there as I have removed the stock lights, also with the downforce on it, the extra bracing will be necessary.
Also had to push it of the ramp outside to cut the holes in the front and rear wings. pics soon. Lots of Fibreglass dust.
Just ordered the latest Cartech battery cut-off, which is a nice bit of kit, designed and now produced by the guy who used own Armteck, bought out by Omex.
I run the Toyo 888s on my daily driver all through winter, couldn\'t recommend them enough.

Ross, I know you are feeling sensitive about the cage construction but I want to offer some constructive advice, based on several years of succesful competition. I really think you should consider ditching the central front support on the cage. It won\'t be offering a great deal of extra support when the cage as a whole is taken into account and it will be a real pain in the ass when driving on track. It will be akward and annoying when sighting apex\'s and lines through corners.
Before others jump in, I\'m not being negative - I\'m offering seasoned racer advice; and \'m enjoying the info you put in here and find it genuinely interesting.

What wheel are those? I like that design. They look very simialr to the Compomotive MO\'s that I tend to always fit to my cars. In black as well!
Title: Dragon Circuit car
Post by: DRAGON on January 04, 2007, 03:43:12 PM
I am more than happy to take on advice.
The central screen bar is made from a much thinner walled tubing, like some of the other bars in the cage that are only there for stiffness. Therefore the weight disadvantage is certainly out weighed by the stiffining benefits. Also this bar is not just there on its own, it starts on the tunnel and goes straight over and links to the rear suspension turrets.
The visability is something I cant really comment on until driving the car, it may not be as bad as you think. However if it is a problem, I will remove it, and may have to redesign that part of the cage.

I reckon the bar will drive you bonkers after a few laps - but that might just be me. I tend to plan my lap and car position quite a few corners in advance so like a nice clear view into the distance.
Nice wheels but very expensive new. Compo\'s are about a quarter of the price and will be as light/strong. They build them to your exact offset/rim specs as well. Might be worth considering if you are doing a wheel swap.

Just about to install transmission etc. Quick pic from the rear of the engine first.
The external wastegate is one worry that I have from a noise point of view, but I think I\'ll get the car running first and address that issue later. It will be difficult to route back into the exhaust because with the Blitz kit the WG vent comes through the sunframe.

Is that battery the same as what you would use in the relocation kit? I need to move my battery to where the rear bins were, or preferably behind the passenger seat if I can get a small enough one. Then I\'d need a shiny ali case and mounting bracket - could you sort out something along those lines?
Title: Dragon Circuit car
Post by: TonyC on January 13, 2007, 05:57:08 PM
Quote from: Initial-D... Then I\'d need a shiny ali case and mounting bracket -

Ideally you want to box the battery in something that is non conductive. So that if the battey or terminal cable does manage to break free it won\'t hit the case the battery is in and generate a circuit. That is why the battery boxes you can buy for race cars are fibreglass or similar.
Title: Dragon Circuit car
Post by: AtomicRex on January 14, 2007, 09:24:52 AM
Why do you need to relocate the battery?

Surely unless you are going to strip the car down to completely minimise weight then there is very little need to put it into the cabin.

Why not save on money for the conversion....just spend the money on a redtop battery.  You can still keep it under the bonnet...but not need all of the extra wiring..which as it is a larger gauge will weigh a fair bit!....plus its awkward to get through the bulk head!

But as Tony says dont put the battery in a metal case...Tweeks do a simple grp case
Title: Dragon Circuit car
Post by: Initial-D on January 14, 2007, 12:30:27 PM
Thats a really good point about the cable weight hahaa!!
I am stripping the car down though lol! Having it seam welded and also putting in a full point cage too, I was moving the battery for weight distribution and to free it up from the under bonnet temps.

I\'ll check out tweeks, hopefully they do a really small case for a tiny red top! Do you know what is the min spec I can use?
Sory for the thread hijack Ross!

I\'m going to see my car on tuesday...so will let you know the model number I use.

I put my battery down in the passenger foot well, most of the electrics are up there anyway, its in a good position for weight...between the axels...so meets that criteria.

What are you doing for a wiring loom??  I\'m in the process of designing a new one, it will incorporate the electrical cut off, the standard loom, and the Apexi Engine loom.  It will be optimised for both weight and ease of fault finding.

Which ECU are you running?
Title: Dragon Circuit car
Post by: DRAGON on January 15, 2007, 10:28:01 AM
Ben, I would definetly recommend relocationg the battery, as you have said the weight distribution and eng bay airflow benefits would be worth the cost. Also if you know what you doing the cable doesnt need to be any longer, so weight isnt an issue.
In reference to the battery box, then yes a non-conductive material would be optimum. Although for my car, this simple cage is more suitable.
Title: Dragon Circuit car
Post by: Initial-D on January 15, 2007, 02:28:15 PM
Ahh footwell idea sounds really good, especially since you would\'nt need tons of extra cable to run through. I\'m going to wire in a cut-off switch between the battery too. and have that up by the dash.

I\'ve already stripped back the existing loom so I have what I need to run with the Apexi. Although I haven\'t gone quite as far as you Ross! I\'m still in two minds about keeping the ABS - how much weight will I lose and is it worth it? The air con is going though thats for sure!

at 100,000 rpm Im sure a water droplet is going to do damage to a blade.  It will also potentially cause an imbalance in the rotation.

Also it is going to hamper the air flow through the intercooler.

Sure Rich.

The problem is the atomisation of the droplet. If you spray it from where Ross is the droplets clump together. the larger sized droplet causes the impellor to chip and errode.

You need very fine atmoisation and the ratio needs to be finely worked out.

I have done this in tha past with great success. To name one, high compression rotors running high boost.
S

p.s its not going to unballance anything if done correctly and is not going to do anything to his intercooler becasue he dont have one.

With the meth he will gain loads by having extra ignition advance etc

Dear oh dear my efforts are really underestimated. But dont underestimate holding together an engine on PUMP FUEL at 1.9 BAR with 70 degree + intake temps, with a 1000 HP turbo.
PS, I believe you are mistaken as to where I am spraying it, I think you are confusing a push fitting that allows intake removal for a jet.

Are you spraying it onto the nut on the compressor Ross, or completely away eg opposite direction away from the turbo inlet and letting the pressure differential caused by the turbo to suck the water mist in?

Dont worry if you cant devulge all your secrets on here, I understandy :Thumbs-up

When I was looking at the car i thought that it the water metanaol was getting sprayed into the plenium . Guess the debate is if the water/methanol injection is going in preturbo or not. Wouldent have thought so but i may be wrong.

Id be very warey of water droplets going into the turbo. Ive seen at first hand the damage a blade of sand strikeing the titanium blades on jet engine can cause and would have thought the effects would be similar..

Ross - looks very interesting, no I/C seems to be a very brave move but if it works and the engine holds together then it\'s great.  Clearly good to use this in appropriate applications though.

Blimey, all a bit warm here...

Well, I think it\'s cool to be trying something a little different to what I\'ve expected.  If it works, then WINNER!!  I\'m certainly keen to hear the results, and see what the long term effect is on the components.

I\'m a big fan of different things being tried and tested - in Practical Performance Car mag, the cover car has a turbo in place of the rear silencer...  and it works fine apparently. (athough I love their Rolls Royce track day car with the truck turbo.  Or the SD1 Rover with the 27 litre tank engine).

I\'m not suggesting that Ross hasn\'t considered and thought about what he\'s doing, and I\'d like to think that we\'ll see the results of these ideas shared about...  After all, if it wasn\'t for people thinking out of the box, dear old Felix might never have come up with our fave power plant!!  And god bless Mazda for sticking with it!!

Now a Datsun 240Z with a naturally aspirated Bridgeported 20B would peak my interest....
