Title: Oh Dear.. What have I done?
Post by: Makino on January 31, 2005, 12:31:34 PM
Hello guys,

I think I know the answer but prehaps I just need to re confirm my fears.

Anyway, tonight I was driving down a long open road. Foolishly, I
thought I would open my FD up and see what it can offer.

I think I may have reached up to 170mph and then as I started slowing
down the car was driving funny. As thou something was missing. Came to
a near stop and the car wont hold idle. I have to give it some gas to
hold idle. However, the car is running. Thou, not properly.

What does it sound like I have done?

Thanks.

possibly knocked off a vac hose that controls idle ( cheap )

you killed it ( expensive )

at the end of the day it could be a lot of things - will it tick over ( in any fashion ?? )

170 - not a bad speed though :)

Sounds to me like youve done a tip.

Do you have a boost gauge?  Is it flapping about at idle too?

If its a vac hose. I\'d buy you all a round of drinks.

I will go and check the boost guage shortly as the car had to be parked up on my parents drive.

Just went and checked.

Here are the symptoms.

Car starts first time.

Idles initially around 1000 rpm and then slowly settles around 500 rpm. Thou the car is shaking as thou it is due to stall.

Boost is just flickering at around -0.2 bar. Flickering between -0.2 bar and -0.3 bar.

Exhaust making a rather unusual sound.

I think thats about it. Can anyone help?

Still think it sounds like a tip to me.  I would suggest getting it compression tested, but im not the most technical of people so someone else may have better advice.

Sounds like you blown the lower intake manifold gasket. I think you engine is ok. Garages charge quite a bit a labour to do the gasket though as it\'s not exactly 10 minutes work.
A known problem on pre 96 cars unfortunately.

I suppose there is light.

However, if I have thrown an apex seal. Then the car should still run, but lumpy?

If it is the lower intake manifold gasket. What do you think must have caused that and wouldnt that mean my car should fluctuate on idle between 1500-2000rpm and give an almost roaring sound.

Thanks for your help. Where are the other tecchies!

depends what part of the lower intake manifold gasket has gone on the symptom you have you can have high bouncing idle or low bouncing idle. You will probably find you can still accelerate and the car will pull okish but you will get a lot of popping from the exhaust. This is also the reason why it sound like your exhaust is blowing because of where the blow is on the gasket.
If it is the apex seals I would expect the vacuum to fluctuate a lot more than what you have describe plus a little harder to start possibly needing a little gas to get it going.
Cause is anything above normal boost on the crappy paper gaskets, or even stock boost as the paper gasket just eventually fails. The 96 onwards have metal gaskets so don\'t have this problem

Mine started fine when the apex seals broke, evne leaving it for weeks before taking it to get fixed and stuff.  It was after it tried to settle down that it wasnt right.

Your symptoms sound very similar to mine.  I thought I can hear a blow towards the front of the car, been told it is a 8-10 hrs labour to change that gasket!!  :O

Worst case - you\'ve chucked a tip
probably due to a lack of fuel at high rpm

Or
IM Gasket or hose etc

see if you can hear blowing in that area
