Title: Intercoolers
Post by: Mr_7 on January 22, 2005, 11:52:54 AM
Any one know of the best aftermarket intercoolers out there?

What is the biggest size (length, width and height) that the FD\'s can handle with chopping them up? Is this affected whether you have single or twin turbos?

What sort of price are they and what sort of pressure are they tested to cheers,

Would imagine the APEXI kit is the top of most peoples list, best price? - ring round the usual supplyers, there seems to be plenty of after market traders these days.
You do have a number of options on IC\'s - uprated SMIC [try rotechnics in Reading or WGT up in Cheshire] FMIC - well there are any number of suppliers as stated before. As to wheather you have twin or single it makes no difference only how deep your pocket is :D

can you tell me where you got the red silicon hoses from and how much they cost (going to be doing the same to mine soon)
does the front bumper have to be removed to get the radiator and a/c out, will be removing my air con too,

Looks really cool. Are they the red coolant pipes from carl you where talking about ?? Was it a big job to make the new brackets for the new position for the rad ? I\'ve got quite a bit more to buy before i get mine fitted. I\'m going to relocate my battery as soon as possible. How much is the kit for taking the air pump off the car ?? Is the peice of carbon fibre in the pictures you sent me the cover for it ?

Have you upgraded your injectors yet ?

Cheers

Gavin: The battery is relocated in the boot ( not wired it yet tho ). The silicone hoses came form Clive @ SHY AUTO and i think they were around £70. The nose cone doesnt need to be removed to do the air con. But i had to remove the black platic frame thing from inside of it. It is so much easier once its removed.

:)

Shaunwil: Answered the pipe question above mate. The brackets were easy once i had it all secured in place. The carbon plate is the blank plate used for the air pump blank. Had it made by a friend at a well known local sports car manufacturer. Shame it wont be visable. I gotta now make sence of the rads nest in order to remove the bits for the air pump.
gonna map it with the stock ones for now and hopefully they should be sufficent untill further development.

Cheers. I\'ll have to try and get some stainless punched out to blank it off. Will i definately have to remove it to fit the fmic or can i leave it till later ? How much of the original y pipe is plastic ? I\'m wondering if i can replace it with a 90 deg silicon bend and then make my hard pipe off it, but the air pump is in the way.

God, loads to think about. Lots to do !!!!!

i dont think you need to remove it at all mate.  I did mine coz i wanted to decat my car and get rid of as much clutter as poss.
I think Trust make a metal piping kit which replaces the stock plastic pipes. If you put a silicone 90 deg bend on the y pipe outlet i dont think it will fit under the strut brace.

Good point on the strut brace ! I\'ll probably have to buy the 90 deg bend anyway for the piping, so may be able to see if it is possible while i have it in bits !

Depends what nose cone u have - if its stock only a 1/3 of it will get air any way!

i looked in to intercooler design a while back and it is well documented that you only have to duct between 1 sixth and 1 quarter of the total core size. i will probobly get shot down but i have seen it writen and said a number of times.
Scott
i reckon you could get a stock R34GTR intercooler in the nose of a fd. 600x 260 x 60 as measured by R34 owner + end tanks approx 200mm
if you cut the nose cone right

If you want big you won\'t get much bigger than this racing spec unit from the US.Measures 790mm in length.
Requires some good old \'chopping\' at the front and is a pig to fit but as my car is a trackday toy I need something very chilly!

Aircon system will be removed so the WGT alloy rad will get plenty of airflow.Front bumper is after market.

Cheers
