Title: Been to see a 7 just a few questions
Post by: Get GReddy on June 13, 2003, 06:49:30 PM
Went today to see a 1992 Elfini. Can you tell me what the Elfini is all about, and are they worth anymore?  It\'s a standard car apart from a HKS zaust and 17/18" Chrome Alloys.

It had a Bose sound system in the rear, do not know if these are standard but it had like a air ducting going from the unit to the rear speakers. This didnt aperar to be working, although the head unit was fiddly to say the least. I couldnt pick up any local radio stations due to the search program not looking for the right freq. I\'m thinking that it is still set to pickup Japanese stations?? Can this be altered to pick up UK radio. any ideas on why the Bose rears wouldnt be working? and do i need a new head unit.

Went for a toot out in it, all i can say is     :D gave it one in 2nd, and up untill 5000rpm it flew, then on 5000rpm there seemed to be a flat spot. I never got it past 5000 due to heavy trafic. Is the flat spot a problem?

Do the turbos kick in both at same time or are they independant ?
Also i thought that the 7\'s had drilled and grooved disks all round, this had solid disks all round, and dont know if its coz im not used to them and not pressing hard enough, but they seemed a bit lazy.

Only other car ive been out in that turns so many heads is a 355 and belive me i\'ve drove a few cars in my time, made up with the experience.

Think thats it for now, sorry for the long post, but please reply to all my questions

  ;)  :D

Efini is the japanese name for the RX7

the turbos are sequential and there should be a dip in the boost at the transition 10-6-10 ?

The BOSE head unit will still be looking for the Jap frequncies and you can buy a frequency expander to sort that out

Not sure why the rear speakers wouldn\'t work, but all that ducting is just for the Bass :D

I\'ll let someone more qualified take over now :D

As Mike has said the Efini is the Jap version of the FD. So no difference is cost.

The Bose sound system is standard in certain models, as for the radio not being able to pick up stations, you might need a freq. expander on it. Or better still change it to a UK headunit.

The boost pattern for a 92 model would be 10-8-10, best get a boost gauge on it and check that. It sounds like it is making primary boost but a little strangled on the secondary. This could be down to a couple of reasons, the main being either a collapsed CAT, or the inlet pipe to the secondary turbo has collapsed due to heat over time. CAT\'s can be replaced/removed, the inlet pipe to the secondary turbo is nothing major.

The turbo\'s comin seperatly, so you should feel the kick when going above 5000rpm. If your not getting that kick, put a boost gauge on, and see whats happening.

Brake discs are vented all around, some people do replace them with drilled/grooved discs to help cooling. But the stock brakes are VERY good. Up until a couple of years ago they were the best you could get.

Hope this answer most of your questions, if you have any more, please post up, and someone will reply.

Cheers Guys, so standard brakes are not vented/drilled as standard then? It\'s looking most likely that by next weekend i\'ll have it :D

Fish any ideas on why the rear sound system is not working?

Thanks again

Chris

Regards rear tubes not working, mine was the same when I first got it. When I changed the head unit for a double din found the wire had degraded and broken down so just replaced it, the aucostic wave system is powered by a seperate amp that is under the rear seats. You can get a frequency changer from most car ICE dealers and they are cheap but I found the original Bose unit (actually rebadged clarion units) a bit low rent so would advice changing the unit all together. As regards the brake discs are you sure they are solid and not vented because they should be vented, just changed mine to drilled and grooved only slightly better than standards so not sure it was worth the extra money. Keep the questions coming always someone on here willing to help out.Oh and if you want people to notice you and stare the RX is the car to be in, it attracts looks and comments from all onlookers. Hth, cheers Leigh.

Chris, as Rotorboy said, the discs are vented all around. Some people fit drilled (holes in the surface) or grooved (grooves in the surface) of the discs. These just help cooling.

I\'m all :D :D :D  just gotta wait for the AA report on mine Monday which is gonna take 3 hours    then if all is well i got a guy coming from Glasgow to buy my 200 and next weekend we rock and roll :rollin

Have you checked the engine out at all?  Service history since he\'s owned it? Regular 3 or 4k mile oil changes?  How many miles has it done? You should get a proper compression test on it, with a rotory compression tester.  Where are you based, are you near any specialists?

Hi again Chris, have too agree with Rich if you are thinking of going a head with the purchase check out the service history and then check out the service history and then check it again, also get it looked at by someone who knows wankels inside out. When I bought mine about 3 years ago I let my heart rule my head and ended up with a rebuild after just 3 months, overheated and cracked the front rotor plate. Take a look on the Autotrader web site there are  a few out there for sale why not have a good look around at others before commiting yourself may help you negoiate a better price. Let us know how you get on and try not too get caught out, all the best Leigh.

It does\'nt come with any history :(  guy said he bought it from the 1st owner in this country as the log book is only showing 1 owner. Has all the Jap certificates but no history. He has about 3 other people on it, and i know that i shouldnt let my heart rule me, but you all know how hard that is in practice.

AFAIK there are no rotor experts near me to do a check on the engine, do you guys have any lists of anywhere that are close to Liverpool/Chester/Cheshire area?

Cheers

What extra\'s has the car got added like engine mods etc, have they been put in properly don\'t forget the Rex needs copious amounts of fuel or it will run lean and expect the wankel too expire rapidly. As regards the history if it is true and he is the second owner since import there must be some proof of history even if only oil changes. There is a links page on this web site that gives a list of rotary experts/dealers one in particular is Jimmies they have started to import and sell Rexes with their own engine rebuild guarentees the guy who runs the company is Andrew he own\'s and drive\'s an Rx7.Like I mentioned before there are a lot of Rx7\'s out there my neighbour also drives an Rx7 and he looked at 5 cars before he made his mind up. Take your time it will be worth it in the long run, why not consider travelling a bit of distance for the right car a bit of time and patiance will pay off, don\'t be put off and keep smiling because once you have the right car you will be smiling every time you turn the key:rollin :rollin all the best Leigh.

They\'re lot\'s of rx7\'s for sale in the uk at present. My advise is buy anyone that works. There should be no flat spots or anything affecting performance. You\'ll know when you found a good one because it will go like an absolute rocket.

this is how they get bad name\'s, when a bad one is bought and the owner has trouble and puts it down to the car being unreliable and not the previous owners neglecting its needs.

I wouldn\'t touch it untill a specialist looks at the engine, and not the AA or RAC, I think there was a post where someone had the AA diagnose a rotary\'s problem as the timing belt had snapped.

A flat spot? Doesn\'t sound good mate
