Title: Prices: Whats Going On?
Post by: Chiron on January 18, 2005, 12:20:44 PM
I am looking to buy 3rd gen but i\'m a bit confused about how much to pay. Basically i\'m looking for a car that needs work ( rebuild no problem etc). It seems that cars up for private sale go for £6k upwards but dealers seem to sell them for under £5k. Whats going on? are dealers just keen to shift them on?

Hi

Have you looked on Ebay, I have seen a couple that need rebuilds going for around the 4K mark and they look like nice examples.

The only advise I can give is themore you spend the better you get.

Cheers

Be very careful when buying cheap RX-7\'s,I\'ve lost count of the number of accident damaged examples I\'ve seen for sale in dealers.Poor RX-7\'s can be bought for peanuts at auction in Japan but good clean examples still command good prices.

As a general rule, you get EXACTLY what you pay for with an RX-7.

I\'ve seen a couple on ebay that are going cheap but need engine rebuilds, whichis kinda what i\'m after. Basically I dont have £6-8k going spare at the moment ( trying to buy a house ) but I do have the technical/mechanical/electrical skills to rebuild cars and usually enjoy doing it.
Any ideas how much an engine rebuild would cost if you were to give it to a specialist?

Ah JamesFD3, i\'m also in Hinckley :wave

Currently getting mine rebuilt and i\'d say your talking at \'least\' 2k upwards for a proper job. ( let me stress the least bit too)  But if you fancy your chances mechanically there is a guide on rebuilding under technical i think

you really do get what you pay for with these cars ..  if it appears to be a bargain there is likely to be something wrong with it (aside from a blown engine) ..

believe me .. you can pick up some utter rubbish in the auctions .. a good quality grade 4+ car will still fetch good money .. good early FD\'s still go for 1 million yen plus ....

take the £5k cars from dealers and work the price backwards ... by the time he\'s made his profit, got the car over here, VAT, Import tax, shipping, auction fee\'s, De-registration etc etc ..

oh and "race spec" £4k cars do not exist  .. blown engine or not.
