Title: Burning Rubber!?!
Post by: OrecaViper on January 12, 2005, 10:05:27 PM
Hi all,
gotta make this quick so here goes........
I have had my FD about 6 weeks now and I have what I think is a bit odd, when i stop the car from a journey to and from work ( nothing silly just steady m-way miles etc ) and there is a strong smell of very hot rubber coming from the rear right wheel arch?

The exhaust system is standard except for a racing beat back box so was wondering if either the tyre was getting hot due to the exhaust closeness or the exhaust mount rubbers are getting hot ( although I dont think this is the prob!?! ).

One thing I noticed is that the tyre is a little warm but then they all get a little temp in them, it isnt excessive.
Had a look at the suspension from the back and the right rear camber marker is pointing is off centre and the left is at the very bottom centre?

If any of these are common or you have heard of this before then please let this FD novice know!!!!
Many thanx, Neil.

Get the rx up some ramps and check underneath all wheel arches to see if there is any contact anywhere??? Wil have to find somewhere with a flat bed ramp though :(

I think you answered your own question \'ere...

If your sus is out of geometry / alignment you might have rubbing on the wheel arches! I\'d take it to your fave 4-wheel alignment centre and get the camber and tracking checked.

Are the tyres worn evenly?

The tyres are worn very evenly, and i have had a good look under there this morning ( although not on a ramp ) and can\'t see any signs of rubbing at all.
Took it for a "spirited drive" felt the tyre temperatures and they were the same side to side which would suggest that the geometry is ok?
The exhaust heat shield isnt getting hot either ( the one next to the wheel ) so its a bit strange!
Still think it could be the xhaust rubbers but it needs a closer inspection.
Thanx for your replies!!

Had my previous RX for 5 years, and everytime I parked up in the garage, it always smelt the same as you describe. Std car + exhaust, by the way. No problems were ever found, it just seemed to be part and parcel of the huge heat that these cars generate, esp with the size of the rear box.
My current RX does this + smells the same to.

Me too, think it\'s just the car.  It usually occurs after some hard driving, I\'ve never noticed from running around town.

Standard UK car. Noticed slight whiff once or twice but nearly always notice huge amount of heat coming from that wheel arch. Think the standard exhaust really does get some heat in it.
