Hi,
That is pretty hard to accertain, as unless there is written history or the car comes directly from a builder, buyers can only take the word of the seller. The majority of Jap street owned and driven cars are unlikely to have ported engines. They tend to go for finesse and make the most from bolt on parts.

When WGT stripped my engine they reckoned whomever had rebuilt it didnt really do that great a job on it, not all Jap rebuilds will be of good quality...just like anywhere else i suppose..

Think about it why is the car being sold in the first place? in my experiance ther is normaly some irritating problem or a major problem with every rex that comes over. if it was perfect why would it be sold.

cjr - i have heard that as cars get older they become harder to pass the shaken (like an mot) and hence instead of throwing so much money at them, they sell it and buy something else which works out cheaper and i doubt anyone else would want a car in japan without its shaken so it is shipped out.

from several purchases from me and my friends from japan (including a rex) i can say it depends on where/who u buy off as all our cars have been mechanically sound with only the body defects that were stated before purchase

Yep Mr Babz is correct, the shaken can cost in excess of £1000 and couple that with the fact that Japanese culture tends to look down on people buying 2ndhand cars, most buy new.

the above are all very valid and true points. The other thing to remember is that these cars are 5 to 10 years old and may off been looked after or my not, they are also performance cars that have had a hard life and long may it continue.
