Sounds like you may have lost a rotor? Does it still run?

You can take the spark plugs out and turn the engione over by hand. If the engine has even a half decent compression ratio it will makes a pfffft noise. Kinda like a soft spitting noise. Hope that this wasnt to bad a description! If the noises arnt there, on either or houseing then I would have to agree with Brett. Wouldnt advise trying to turn it over on the starter motor again until you know what is up otherwise you could damage rotor or housing beyond repair.
Good luck and i hope it is something simple.
  cheers, michael.
