Title: Some questions about the FD exhaust system.
Post by: chrisBoid on January 07, 2005, 09:03:04 PM
1) Is there more than 1 catalytic converter on the FD?

2) Where are they located?

3) Where does the air pump actually add air to the exhaust?

4) Does the air pump suck in air through the air filter?

5) If there are no cats in the system, is it worth keeping the air pump - would is still aid the MOT emissions test?

No1 & 2
UK models have a pre-cat in the front downpipe, Jap models don\'t, but all fd\'s have a main cat,
no3
Air pump adds air into main cat,
no4,
yes,
no5
As i understand it, its best to keep air pump as this aids the drive belt to get a better purchase on the water pump pulley, not sure about emisions and mot though,

think thats about as much as i know, other guys will put me right if i got it wrong.

If you have removed the cats, and have an Apexi PFC and fancy getting a pulley kit you can remove the air pump without problem. I think you could even get away with just doing the pulley kit mod, but dont quote me on it. ;)

It wont do much if you leave it there, as it will not be plumbed in to the exhaust system.

The pulley kit option is the cause of all these questions as when I was getting my PowerFC installed I found out I was running a de-catted mid-pipe.

Sounds like I can get it removed.

Thanks guys :)
