Post by: scooby_si on January 07, 2005, 06:46:10 PM
just to get another stupid question off my mind what are the notable difference between the various porting options...
Now basics as i understand it is bridge will give potential big gains but idle real high & be a total beatch in traffic idleing etc.
Anything more specific productive or otherwise would be nice.
Love the idea of a stoopid bridgey but come on folks what\'s the devil in the detail........

Are you talking with or without turbo? Or just a naturally aspirated 13b with a weber? more detail for the audience!:D

go 1/2 bridge best of both worlds! :D

decent streetport on the primaries
bridgeport secondaries

I don\'t have much problem in traffic, get som odd looks as it hunts a bit at idle but that\'s all. Braking is interesting (I\'ll let a more teckie person explain why!)

I\'ve just started digging into this...

It would be good to know what the differences would be for both twin and single turbo set ups in terms of power gains and when the benefits run out for a twin set up...

As far as I can make out you can go as far as you want with porting on the twin turbos but the benefits of more extreme porting are really only realised once you go to a single turbo set up.

Any info would be good...

Cheers

That\'s because the twin turbo pack is rubish... yes you hear me... RUBISH, and a bitch to remove and refit. A GT51R fits just lovely... why doesn\'t every FD have one?????:D

Because Matt, while you are waiting for the thing to get on boost you could read the whole of War & Peace! :rollin  Admittedly once boost arrives you could travel back in time to before you read it but still!

you\'ve been told!

back to the topic though; generaly, the more aggressive the porting the larger the power increase at the top end and the more "undrivable" at the bottom end. The glory of the Mazda rotary though is that as Mark pointed out, you can "tune" the primarys independantly from the secondaries, which might offer a good compromise. Some tuners focus more on the exhaust ports and make them really bloody big, this can bring faster turbo spooling and better top end. The other thing to consider is who to choose to do the work... the craftsmen avaliable in this country have different styles and their signiture techniques are based on different backgrounds and experiences. Saying this, there\'s nothing worse than a really well ported engine with a crap map. Mark, I do believe you have been told twice, if you make it a third time, you\'ll have to stand in the corner and face the wall!!:D :p Hope my incy wincy bit of knowledge is food for thought Si.

I think this may help you to understand types of porting:
