Title: Strange clutch problem
Post by: Brett on January 05, 2005, 01:51:26 PM
This is with regard to my Egi:-

Sometimes the clutch starts to slip during acceleration, so my first thought (about 5 months ago!) was oh well another clutch plate has become lunched.  So when it started slipping not far from my workshop I thought, \'oh well, lets just finish it off!\' an floored the throttle.  The clutch slipped for another 3-4 seconds, then picked up and all was excellent again.  used the car again a few weeks later, all was fine.  Used it again about 2 weeks after that, clutch was slipping, floored it, problem solved.
I think I must be getting something leaking onto the clutch plate whilst its parked up, I\'ve tried parking it uphill and downhill etc, but the problem still persists if its been left standing for any amount of time.

Bear in mind it doesnt slip immeadiately, it usually starts after 20mins or so of driving and sometimes not at all.

I\'m going to purchase a new uprated clutch anyway, but was wondering if anyone could shed any light?
If it was wear then I think it would have worn out long before now.  Clutch was checked over and had a new plate fitted about 9000 miles ago.

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Maybe the pressure plate is wearing out, i.e lossing clamping force???

Possibly, but you\'d think it would be getting progressively worse though?

You would but possibly when you floor it the heat created is enough to create some friction and overcome the intermittent clamping.... Its a strange one...

I dunno.  I\'ll just have to play around with some clutches and see what gives when I take it out.
