Title: Full information on Air-con required.
Post by: Warthog on January 05, 2005, 11:06:01 AM
Could somebody please direct me to a full easy to read explanation of how the air-con system works, with idiots guide in picture form. Looked for it on iluvmyrx7 but the aircon section is not loaded onto the site.
The reason is I\'m thinking of disconecting it from the ecu and incar electrical normal use and to reuse it as my cooling system for my charge cooler it\'s just an off the wall idea at the moment but it may work. Your views from those who can see the potential of very very cold intake temps.

This is not entirely crazy, some proffesional rally teams have used Air Con for charge cooling, the down side is that using your air con consumes 3-5hp and the amount of air flow verses the performance of the system may give negligable improvements over a certain RPM.

Also, the coil used in your air con system has a fairly dense fin structure which may slow the air you are trying to pass over it, I used to work for an Air con company and did consider this as an option, if you do go ahead please let me know as it would be interesting to look at the results. Good Luck

Chris

found this site quite helpful explaining stuff about air con....

Sorry I\'ve not posted a reply sooner but have been very busy at home.
Not sure which way to go. -- use the air con rad as my c/c cooling rad flush it out etc.--- fit my PWR full c/c kit which has its own rad and e/fan and leave the a/c alone ---- or to divert the a/c pipes that would go to the inside of the car and have another heat exchange unit made so that the a/c gas cools the fins that air would flow over but have it so that the water coming from the PWR rad flows into this new heat exchanger over the a/c cooled fins and then onto the c/c it\'s self therefore having extra cool water going into the c/c fins inside the c/c that the turbo air is then cooled by as it passes through back into the turbo. I\'m tempted to try this but the down side is having to run the a/c all the time . I may be able to get around this with a temp/switch that turns the system on at at pre-set temp. I did think of just sending the a/c gas into the c/c but i don\'t think that the c/c will take such massive temp changes.  VIEWS PLEASE.
