Title: half the miles in half the time...or something
Post by: Top_gear_towers on January 05, 2005, 11:02:05 AM
Can I ask what might be a silly question:

If a car has been brought into the UK but not had its km converted to miles during its SVA (assuming this is possible) - can you get the conversion done later in its life?

The reason is thus, I am looking at buying an import that hasnt had its conversion done.

Is noone replying to this coz the answer is so simple?

I suspected that only an importer could change the miles on a car as it goes through its SVA - but dont know...

Anyone?

Hi mate,

yes you can some people were talking about it on another thread very recently. There is a couple of companies, who will convert to mph, and also some will be able to convert the milometer to the correct mileage value.

regards

Gareth

Nice one G - that thread seems to lack a conclusion, so I\'ll email both companies and whack up thier reply here.

Hi,

If you send me the speedo, I can get it done. Have the speedo changed from KPH to MPH, including a full recalibration of mileage display. PM or e mail me for details.

Freddy, I\'ll pm you mate.

If the kms are put into miles - does anything else need adjustment to stop the car thinking its in kms still...

I dont want the miles doubling once the conversion is done!!

As promised above, here is the reply from autoprotec:

Thanks for your email

This conversion changes the clock to miles specs so it (KM LIGHT OUT MILE LIGHT ON)and I charge £100 for the recalibration conversion the postage cost is also your cost (to and return) which judging off other clocks sent by post this is around £7-00 each way

I require the clock only and advise that it is well packaged and bubble wrap protected recorded delivery is a good option

I usually accept payment via pay pal including the return postage (which obviously you would calculate from the price on sending to add in)

For your peace of mind I have feedback on the FTO owner’s site for recalibrations I have done by post in FORUM / NAMED section paul@Autoprotec

//www.ftooc.org

if you have any further questions or require any further info please don’t hesitate to contact me

                                                                                                    Many thanks Paul (Autoprotec)

Hi Chap,

According to my receipts the 1st UK owner of my car whom had the car imported had the speedo converted by http://www.protech-uk.co.uk/

Was £185 back in 1999. Hopefully be cheaper now.

Seems this was the first stop for the car.

The receipt says..

Speedo conversion and derestrict from KM to MPH : £185.00
MOT Test : £31.44
Supply and fit numberplates : £25.00
Fit rear fog light : £40.00
Fit Cat 1 Alarm : £352.50
Reset Odometer : £125.00 (..?)

Hope that\'s of some use if you\'re still in limbo.

Cheers,
