Title: False low coolant warning
Post by: boltoa on June 09, 2003, 10:42:33 AM
Hi all

My car occasionally gives me the low coolant warning light - accompanied by a very loud insistent beep. I know this is a false alarm as I keep a close eye on coolant levels and have never needed to top it up.

I remember reading something somewhere a while ago saying this was a common problem - something to do with the switch corroding or becoming dirty, but now can\'t find the web page I saw this on.

Can anybody help - I\'m not even sure where the switch is, and whether it is just a matter of some contact cleaner or do I have to replace it?

Any help much appreciated.

Andrew

well on mine - it did this - 1988 2nd gen non turbo

the filler cap on the TOP of the radiator has a wire from it - this is the switch/sensor

just track this back and see what you can find

hope this helps

The sensor operates when it becomes dry to indicate low coolant.

If you look in your engine bay and the filler to the left of the alternator, about three inches down from the filler cap you will see a wire going into a sensor this is the culprit.

Great, thanks. I\'ll take a look.

Sorry, should also have mentioned it\'s a 1994 Type R FD. Although it sounds like this is common to 2nd and 3rd gen.

where are you checking your levels aswell ?

i used to simply check the over flow bottle ( yeah i know ! )

make sure you check the radiator and the other filler pipe up

i know on mine the rad one had to be very very full to stop the buzzer
