For the last couple of months my tacho needle has been reporting some pretty weird things - like my engine screaming at 6,000rpm at idle, or sometimes alternating crazily between 2-4000rpm with the engine off! It seems to settle down a bit when it\'s warmed up for some time though it over-reads by random amounts. I\'m assuming a sensor\'s failed somewhere?
It\'s just a little disconcerting to look down and see that I\'m redlining my car driving out of my yard!
Hi Steve
Same thing happened to me, very dodgy readings then nothing at all.
I had to replace my tacho, got a second hand one from a member on here for 40 squid, I tried everything else to fix it but nothing worked apart from replacing it with one that worked.
Cheers
Mine was bust so bought one from Tim at RX Motors. Also try Jimmys.
Ok thanks chaps I guess a new guage is in order then! I have a binnacle for an MX-5 here, I wonder if that\'ll fit? ;) On the plus side it\'s only got 6000 miles on the clock :D
Oh yeah only problem is my rex is an RS-R, one of the rotary 30th anniversary editions... and the only external indication of this is a \'RE 30th Anniversary\' logo on the tacho! :(
In that case id just try Mazda. Try and get them to order you the correct one.
Not sure why you refered to the milage of the MX5, if its the rev counter thats faulty you can replace just that item. This wont effect your milage read out.
If Mazda can\'t help try here, as they are based in Japan and Miguel is a fellow RX7 owner im sure he would be able to get one for you from Mazda Japan.

You will get the contact details of the site.
Thanks for that! The MX-5 thing was a bit of a joke really hence the ;)
I get the feeling a replacement RS-R guage is going to be £££££\'s (or should that be ¥¥¥¥¥?), assuming they are available which is probably unlikely! :( I wonder if the dial face is glued or screwed on, if the latter then I could just swap them over...
Hello again
I still have my old tacho, I will take a look and see how hard it is to remove the dial face for you only problem being removing the needle, you have to make sure its in the right place when you put it bak on.
Cheers
Hi Eddie, thanks for that! Appreciate it!
Hi
Steve, just happened to have the dials lying about and good news mate the face came of very easy, nothing holding it in place apart from the needle and a couple of locator holes, very easy to remove:)
As I mentioned though the needle is a differn\'t matter, the needle comes of easily enough (please remember if removing the needle, use a fork I found this to be the best way becasue even pressure can be asserted on both side and you will not bend the pin the needle goes onto)
You need to make sure the needle goes back on in the same place other wise you tacho reading will not be acurate.
You may want to remove the pin holding the needle at 0 and see where the needle settles before marking a guide line.
May be someone else on the group can help someone who may have removed needles to put new faces on ect.
Hope that helps mate.
Thanks that\'s good news, saves a lot of hassle looking for RS-R dials!
Cheers and a happy new year
Steve
And a Happy new year to you Steve
