Title: Heatsoak ??
Post by: Shaq on December 30, 2004, 12:52:02 AM
Hi people,

I was testing my car on a private race track late this evening , I cant understand why with all my mods I still get heat soak? Temp on the PFC was reading 40-45 ish boosts about 0.4.
As soon as I went on the motorway intake temps were around 33ish and it starts boosting at 1bar again ?

Any ideas why this happens ?

Also my primary turbo is not boosting ? after 3.5k it boosts hard !(when it wants too) usually in third gear rarly in second.

i checked the one way check valve under the Vacuum box thats fine. the Vacuum box holds pressure fine.

Any ideas???

i cant sleep !

HELP !

:(

Sounds like one of the air inlet pipes is collapsing or a sticky solenoid.

yeah I will go with Fish on that one, sticky solenoid.

Question have u still got the double butterfly installed?

The Heat Soak problem is just common thing with the Twin Turbos, they generate a lot of heat espcially when speed is low, soon as you hit the motorway you get good airflow problem disappears.

Hey, this may be a stoopid question, but do you mean you\'re not getting primary boost (from 2000 - 4000 rpm @ 10psi) or secondary (4500 - 9999999999rpm @ 10psi)?

If you\'re not getting primary boost then (as mentioned previously) it sounds like a collapsing inlet - although this does seem unlikely as I\'ve never heard of anyone having this problem before.  If you don\'t get a solid 10psi from the primary turbo the secondary won\'t spin up properly resulting in low boost throughout the rev range...

Hi,

Fish
What do you mean by collapsing inlet pipes do you mean intake if so i have the apexi hard pipes (see picture)

BlitzBoy
Solenoids, i have replaced the double solenoid under the plenum
would you say i have to test all the solenoids with like a voltage tester ?

Spotlamp
the second turbo spools fine i get a good bar out of it at about 4k ish

--------

any one know if the one way check valve (black/green) it suppose to be very hard to blow thru one way.

Ok after seeing that picture I would say its most likely a solenoid thing.

With the standard airbox the OE pipes tend to squash once warm.

Heatsoak and twins....go hand in hand I\'m afraid.......if you don\'t wanna go single have you thought about Water injection;)

great !

i have had enough of this car ! after spending all that time and effort fitting those bits it only managed 336bhp @ 1bar but i think the mazda speed backbox is very restrictive.
a 97 car with blitz air filter and exhaust system produced 370bhp at 0.9 !
something is wrong with mine but then again it is a early 93 so i suppose it would produce less.

i dont have a boost controller on ther car could that cause any problems?, greedy profec B spec2 on order maybe that should sort something out ?

what is the best way to test solenoids? voltmeter or something ?

thanks

Hi Shaq,

hope the car gets sorted soon!

I\'m the very happy fella with 372 fwhp on stock twins

See thread below for the day Shaq and I went to reworx.

Sorry mate, didn\'t mean too .........just thought I\'d confirm your statement...

Any luck with resolving the problem? Perhaps have a quick word with Geoff over the phone?

I will have to have a word with him i think i thought i would post it up here but no luck i guess.
i know i wont be able to fix it and end up buying a single (mmmmm shiny 35/40)

stupid vacuum system!

Would you say when u get the low boost condition in the first turbo u hit 0.4 or closer to 0.5? ,
if its closer to 0.5 then I would say that the solenoid is not bleeding off any air to the wastegate actuator hence the spring in the actuator is operating correctly and opening up at 0.49 BAR as it should. This indicates a problem with that solenoid. You could get the profec boost controller which eliminates this solenoid with its own.

With regards to "Bathurst"\'s good dyno figures its all down to the age of his engine being much newer then yours with less mileage therefore he has better compression hence will deliver more power, still I think your figure of 330 plus at the fly are nothing to be sniffed at thats a fair bit of power.

oh i see i will see what happen with the Profec B then,

I also thought could it perhaps be turbo Lag becase of the large intercooler and pipes ?

but then again why would it boost when its cold ?

when things warm up, problems raise there heads, like splits in pipes and vacumm hoses, or sticky solenoids things get worse as things as they heat up.

The boost controller should cure ur problem I feel, remember there is a setting on the Apexi Commader that tells it you are using a seperate boost controller and to disable the stock solenoid
