Title: Have I got the right gearbox?
Post by: kbareham on December 29, 2004, 04:25:30 PM
I\'ve just been topping up my gearbox oil and found the part number on the gearbox. It shows FC0006416, and also 80225  R565. Since my car is a \'92 FD, and all the other part numbers on various bits are FDxxxxx, I am suspicious that the gearbox could have been changed before it was imported.

I also looked at the ratio\'s in the manual I have. It says that 5th should be 0.719. That would mean changing from 4th to 5th at 3000rpm in 4th would give 2157 RPM in 5th, which is quite a drop. I have just tried it and saw about 2400RPM on the rev counter.

Does anyone know if this is right, or have I got  an FC (turbo 2???) gearbox? Not even sure if they are interchangable?

They are interchangebale, if you look underneath bell housing just on the drivers side you will find a small square plate, thats an inspection plate, i dont thinnk FC gear boxes have these as they dont have a push/pull clutch.  The TII box is lower reving than the FD.

Thanks Tony, I\'ll look for the plate when I get it over the pit again at the weekend.

I took a look yesterday. It seems that at least the bell housing is FD, because it has the inspection cover and a label warning about the pull type clutch.

The reason I was topping it up was because the gearbox was getting slightly noisy. The oil level was OK. Now after about 200 miles over the christmas period, it is noisy in 1st, second and third. It is very noisy in 4th, and quiet in 5th. Oh, and the syncro on 2nd is barely working, because I can only get 2nd at walking pace or less! So it looks like I\'ll be taking the box out at the weekend. Anyone know any good gearbox specialists?
