Title: Cutting out
Post by: J4P RX on June 08, 2003, 11:45:38 AM
My car keeps cutting out when I stop.  It always starts ok, so I drive off.  When I next stop, the revs just kind of drop down and the engine cuts out.

Its done this a few times now, but starts ok again as long as I blip the throttle whilst trying to start it.

Any idea whats up.  It only seems to do this at night, and when cold.  Towards the end of my journey I have no problems.

Cheers
Lee

Hi Lee,

Has anything changed on the car recently? i.e. exhaust etc.?

When were the spark plugs last changed?

No nothing has changed, spark plugs are pretty new.  Dont know exactly but probably < 1000 miles on them.

It does seem a bit odd, and I cant work out what its doing.  Im just paranoid about it at the moment so keep my foot on throttle at idle to make sure it wont happen.

make sure the throttle cable isnt caught/stuck or the bolt that secures it to the plenum is in the right position.

Check the water and oil temp too.  Is it doing anything strange from cold?
I know its a dirty thing to say but, If its cutting out when its hot it sounds a bit like poor compression, especially if your having to play with the loud pedal to get a restart.  How many miles has it done since new/rebuild?
Also check your electric fans are working too, if the heat is spiking due to loss of the fans then any wear could start to show up...

DOH!!!! Must read posts properly, its doing it when COLD!  I\'d check your idle controller then.  Sounds like the wax pellet may be sticking or summat!
