Title: Aircon removal.
Post by: JamesFD3 on December 25, 2004, 07:37:36 PM
Anyone on here done this job themselves?

Apart from the obvious of having the system professionally de-gassed before I start,is it a fairly straightforward job?
I will be removing the compressor, aircon rad and I understand the heater box under the dash has to be gutted and modified to allow for hot and cold airflow?

Any helpful tips much appreciated.

Cheers
James

I didn\'t do this when i did mine last year, and the heater controls work absolutely fine...

It is quite straightforward really, just tricky getting the bolts for the pump and the pipes themselves out.

1st thing is to take off your existing belt and measure up for a new one (piece of string or whatever) or the power steering will not work.  I got a new belt from local motor factors for about a fiver.

Underbody tray has to come off to remove the air-con radiator.

Took about 2 Hours

Good luck

Jon

I took the heat exchanger out of my car and it was a bitch.... you need to to retain the box it sits in so don\'t knacker it when you are trying to get it out...

You don\'t have to do it by any means but if you want to make sure you undo all the clips and bolts which hold it in place.  The easiest way is to remove the glove box whilst you work on it but even then it\'s tricky.

It\'s a pretty straightforward job, and it\'s satisfying to rip out the condensor that sits blocking the rad  :Hammer

Haven\'t got round to removing the heat exchanger yet but have done it on a previous car as monkey has already described, should be well worth it when it\'s done :)

Is the new belt that is needed a fixed size or is each car different?  If its the same does anyone know what size it is?
