Title: Engine rebuild possiblities
Post by: hot RX on December 23, 2004, 08:09:30 PM
Just wondering how much one costs and what the best way of going about doing it is.

What are my options? Should I go for a normal engine rebuild with no enhancements or go for a bigger bore or single turbo etc...

Where is the best place to go near croydon Juncion 7 M25.

I don\'t need one but am thinking of the possibilities of getting one for piece of mind before I have to end up towing the car to the nearest garage. Would prefer to drive it.

I have a 93 FD3 Auto (no rude remarks please).

NOTE:
just a small point. Took the car out today but it would not start initially so I had the jump leads on it. Didn\'t start for a little while, I just got a ticking noise, like the engine was trying to turn over. I then took the cables and \'followed the manual\' connected them in correct sucession. The car started first time!

Plugs have been replaced etc so no flooding. has anyone experienced this?

yeah mate..i had that problem too..my car has been standing for a while so i try and start it once a fortnight or so..the last time i started it i only moved the car forward a couple of feet then switched the engine off.. when i came to start it up a few weeks later, the battery was flat..all i had was a ticking noise (its caused by the starter motor solenoid not having enough power)..after charging the battery for an hour the car eventually started(it took a bit of turning because for some reason the engine was flooded)
when started,it really stunk of fuel..with loads of clear smoke to match!

come to think about it..the engine was flooded because the first time i started it and moved it, the choke was letting more fuel in..and i didnt give it enough time to burn the excess fuel off.

so if your rx is standing or unused..when you come to start it LET THE ENGINE RUN UNTILL WARM(ISH) OR THE NEXT TIME YOU COME TO START IT, IT MAY BE TOO FLOODED TO START

Robbie you are correct, if you start the car up when cold DO NOT switch straight back off again have heard of a few people doing this and ending up flooding the engine.

Either let it warm up or take for a quick spin to allow the choke to do its job:)

hehe..i found out the hard way..i bought one of those battery booster units (got it cheap £20 from netto.. £40 in argos)..i connected it to the battery and turned the engine over but to no avail..i later read the booster`s  instructions to find out that when you first connect the booster to the battery, you have to wait 2 minuits BEFORE turning the engine over due to the very large current..that was the mistake i made..after reading that i was shitting myself thinking i had ruined the ecu or anything electrical on the car..so i decided to charge the battery and hope to start it normally..at first it would not even try and fire, but the more i turned the engine over it began to try..you can imagine how relieved i was when it went fired up...PHEW!!

When my batt went flat i simply hooked it up to her cars batt and jump started it, started straight away, then took for a long drive !!!

Has been fine since:)

Do you guys think that replacing the starter motor and checking the car electrics to see if the Earthing is working is  best for peace of mind?

I got stuck in a petrol station and luckily had a guy come and jump start the car for me which started straight away.

The batter is fine, so I read some other thredas from older posts and narrowed it down to:

needing a new starter motor
bad earthing
battery draining (this was eliminated as the battery was checked and was fine)

The car was not flooded as it started straightaway with a jump start.

Does the battery booster act like jumpstarting the car? Does it stay connected to the battery permenantly once it is one. Did it solve your starting problems once and for all??

well basically the battery booster unit is just a high current battery in a case with 2 very thick cables to connect to the car battery.the booster unit also has a built in air compressor, torch and a 12volt ciggie outlet for 12v appliances..its a bloody good bargain for £20 because it will definatly get you out the shit some time in the future..its handy to carry around if your in a situation like your in (having to keep jump starting) if you your local netto still has them in stock id grab one..the only problem is that it will only boost your battery once, after that the booster unit will require a recharge with the supplied charger. it is very simple how it works..it just transfers the charge from the booster battery to the `dead` car battery.

have you ever thought of getting your alternator tested?

just take it to your local garage and they will test it in minuits..probly cost around £5-10.

i dont want to piss on your bonfire but if it is the alternator,i have heard they are very expensive to replace. they are very easy to remove..around half hour work and the one on mine was made by mitsubishi?!

oh im soz mate..i didnt quite answer your question..yes the battery booster works in the same way as jump starting and it WILL get you out of trouble..you just need to keep the booster charged in order to pump high current..you connect the booster cables to the car battery, turn on the booster unit, turn on your car ignition (DONT TURN OVER THE ENGINE YET!!) wait 2 minuits for the current to transfer.then turn over the engine. it as simple as that!! :p

surley getting a more powerful battery would be better? Else I have to wait 2 minutes everytime I start the car up?

Thanks for the advice in any case.

well you could get a more powerful battery.that would be the better option..but the booster unit is good for emergency`s just incasy your in the middle of nowhere with a flat battery..or tyre!!

what you need to do is search for a topic on earthing (grounding) wires because i have heard stories that the stock earthing wires are not the best!!  ive seen a few RX-7 with nice thick colour coded earthing wires going around the engine bay.  also i have heard that the engine runs a bit better or something along that line!!
