Title: Help
Post by: dturpin on December 22, 2004, 04:26:36 PM
I have a 1992 FD, with cat back exhaust and twin filters.  I was having a problem a little while ago where the car would stop accelerating when the second turbo was about to come in and the engine would cut out.
After changing the fuel pump it was fine for a couple of months, then it started again.  So after many e-mails to Geff at REWorx (very helpful) he thought it sounded like a ECU problem, so I got another ECU to try and agian it has been fine again for about a month and a half and has just started doing it agian.
When it cuts out I have to pull over and re-start the engine, sometimes it will start straight away and other times it takes a few atempts to start, it is totally ramdom when it does it.
Can anyone help?

If changing the ECU worked for awhile, and does\'nt now I would start looking for an electrical fault thats giving the ECU a poke.

Disconnect the battery and press the brake pedal for 5 seconds, then reconnect the battery and see if this makes a difference to the performance.

Doing this should erase the ECU\'s current settings and return it to its defaults (if it works in a similar way to some other ECU\'s I\'ve played with) after a few hours driving it will have optimised itself within its parameters and the problem may return.

If this has no discernable effect on the problem then I would start looking at solenoids and throttle butterfly control etc.  It may be that you have a sticking butterfly or similar as well.

hmmmm, I have a similiar problem on my car - not quite the same but similiar.

When accelarating it seems that when the second turbo is coming in it stops accelarating and loses power. I also get a noise too - not had the car for a week or so due to a boot install being done but if i remember the noise was almost like air whistling/rushing past something..... on that note i\'m thinking something is jamming the Charge control actuator that opens the butterfly to allow the second turbos air to join in. I think this as I can hear the prespool being vented then when it should come online i lose power.

Don\'t get any cutting out though but as soon as I hear the noise i back off in case of problems!
