Title: Air filter re-posistioning
Post by: Eddie on December 20, 2004, 08:02:29 PM
Hi

I currently have apexi air filters in my gen 3, the guy before me fabricated some sheilding to protect from heat but I cant see it being that effective, but better than nothing:)
I was wondering what the effects would be if I moved the twin air filters underneath the drivers light, seems to be loads of room and I am going to be installing a static twin hella setup shortly.

So can anyone advise if I will run into problems by extending the air filter pipes which the filters attacth too? should only be another 7, 8 inch\'s to reach into the section under the light.

Also Does anyone know if I can also increase the diamiter of the pipes or will this cause problems? for instance 3 inch at the filters going into 5 inch then back down to 3, or is this a waste of time?

I am currently using what I think are the standard black air filter pipes from the original setup, so I am going to fabricate some new pipes.

Any advise welcome as I have no idea what the effects will be if I try these alterations.

Cheers

If you "box off" the filters in there it will be ok, so long as you have ample air feed in there, if you are using ally pipes and keep the diameter the same this too won\'t be a problem and will look better, another upside is less heat trapped in there unlike the black rubber pipes,.

Hi

Thanks for your reply, I am going to use ally pipes.
I potter around town a lot in my car daily drive and all that, so air feed is a problem because I am stuck at trafic lights most of the time.

I am going to extend the ally pipes and put the filters under the drivers light rather than box them off, that way I know the air is cool when pottering round town.

Thanks for your advise

Why not get rid of one of the filters? Put a large single filter in where the light motor is and fabricate a \'Y\' pipe the tail of the \'Y\' being  75mm and the arms [going to the turbos] 55mm [from memory] will save you space and still give you loads of airflow from a cold place:D

Hi John

Sounds reasonable, I may go down this route.
Out of interest you seem very specific on size of tail on the "y" being 75mm, can you enlighten me and let me know the formula for calculating diamiter, for instance if the trailing arms are 55mm each then why not go for 100mm tail spliting into 55mm on the arms to the turbo\'s?

It is an approximation 2 no 2" pipes don\'t make a 4" pipe:D  A single Blitz cone filter will handle all the air you require to run twins, I made up a flange and swept both 55mm pipes into it - worked a treat good enough to support 390fwhp:cool

Hi

Thanks for the info, I was thinking of the HKS mushroom filter when you mentioned moving over to one, I think I will do what you suggest, I will post some how to pics once I have done the job.

Thanks for your input

So over to thew sale section to sell my apexi filters:)

Thanks

What is best carbon or ally? for the filter tubing.

Would have thought carbon would be the job - not only less heat conductive but looks fduking :cool :wave

Cheers once again, I was not sure on the heat conductivity of carbon, I have found a company who will make up something to specification so here I go:)
