Title: Getting a new front bumper....
Post by: hmltnangel on December 18, 2004, 05:34:27 PM
just thinking......

if i was to replace the bumper then obviously a new intercooler and radiator will be needed too but on speaking with my local fitting joint they weren\'t sure about the right setup....(not an rx7 specialist so I though I\'d ask everyone on here first)

apparently on an rx 7 putting an fmic on the car then the radiator behind it could cause problems as the ic could disrupt the flow of air to the radiator. Needless to say I don\'t want to overheat the engine. What would everyone reckon as the best idea? From looking at the FEED bumper I reckon either way - cos it has an intake right in the centre of the bumper for either one. I was thinking a new aluminium radiator mounted at the front then an intercooler bahind using that lovely intake cut into the bumper.

Anyone else agree or would you lot have it the other way around? Whatever way what ic\'s and radiators would you recommend?

Again I have ideas .... was thinking of the fluidyne or the koyo radiator and either the blitz ic or the one from //www.shaneracing.com the replaces the standard ic.

all your suggestions welcome.

cheers

there is a thread at moment about fmic or charge cooler..never heard of anyone placing icooler behind the rad..doubt anyone makes a kit that does it this way anyway..u have a few choices
v mount and new rad some swear by this but defies all conventional tuning logic as intercoolers in engine bay will allways suffer heatsoak/
chrge cooler is good idea but if pump for water packs up while u are booting it and u dont notice then intake temps will soar
i prefer to stick with fmic and larger rad and then look at getting water temps slightly lower by either different thermostat/purple ice or water wetter
on the road fmic shld not cause any cooling probs with larger rad as boost is not sustained
on track however this may well be a different story.best to think about what use ur car will be getting before spending ur money
speak to one of the tuners..geff at re worx uses charge cooloer but his is a 1/4 mile car and charge cooler is better suited for sitting on the line as nil airflow but wnen running on the road a fmic will get cool air all the time ur moving

Charge Cooler?

Well the car will mainly be used as for cruising around in - some sitting at the quarter mile occasionally. Mostly to show off. Def getting the FEED bumper - it has an extra air intake on the middle of it that could be used for sucking air in towards the radiator or the IC depending on what\'s at the back.

What IC would people recommend? I\'m kinda leaning towards the dragon radiator now. so thats half the battle.

Also my car has the twin oil coolers in the side air ducts at the front. (least i think that swhat they are) what would I do with them?

dont touch the twin oil coolers as they are fine.it really is best to speak to maybe on of the tuners ie re worx/wgt/carl if mainly road use then intercooler/if track and 1/4 mile the charge cooler as smaller rad for charge cooler and more air for normal rad.chrge coolers are a good set up but as i said if pump goes u are up the creek as nothing to pump the water means excessive intake temps.reason people go for front mount icooler is the air is free and hits the intercooler first.but is is expensive as intercooler plus radiator etc etc.a rad and v mount is also a pricey set up both these set ups are prob near on 1500.00 plus fitting..charge cooler would be approx 8-900..nothing is cheap when tuning

so not to seem stupid and ask really stupid question but what is a charge cooler?

basically it comes off the turbo same as intercooler then a cylindrical tube with a core that has the intake pipe thru the middle leading to the plenum and a kind of radiator set up round it.the water is pumped thru the rad at front of car then water cools the intake pipe and flows back to the rad again cooling the intake constantly even when stationary...not very good explanation but imagine a small exhaust box with a pipe each end one attatched to the turbo and one the plenum then add a rad and water pump to flow water round the inside of the exhaust box

sounds like a great idea........ think i\'d want a new water pump though..... just in case!

What would happen if you had both? a small fmic or even an smic and the charge cooler?

Best of both worlds or making the air too cool?

The charge cooler water is not part of your engine coolant it\'s a stand alone system with it\'s own elect/pump. look at PWR in ausssie land they are the kiddies. Kit can be purchased in uk from Geff at Reworx. I\'m fitting one at the moment.

silly question but are charge coolers also known by another name only when i tried searching originally on the US forums there was booger all, maybe they\'re just behind us for once (http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/otn/realhappy/xxrotflmao.gif) lol

me too!!

though as far as I\'m aware they are just essentially just water cooled intercoolers! If someone had said that to begin with then I\'d have known exactly what they were on about! They were commonplace on the MR2 forum when I used to have one. People swore by them because the 2 has a crappy airflow to the ic! SO DO WE!

I\'m gonna try searching for them under INTERCOOLERS tomorrow.

For now though folks...... I\'m off out to the pub and hopefully i\'ll be finding some nice chick!

This is the system that Geff at Reworx is running on his fd and it\'s keeping his turbo supplied with cool air. He ran in the 10\'s. But his fd is fatter now over 500bhp at the rear wheels. RESPECT.:3gears-lh

I think the full kit ( not including pipes ) was about £800. But give Geff a ring he will tell you. The only other thing you will need is a Greddy elbow but Geff has those in as well. When I\'ve done mine I will post pictures etc . Not doing any work on the FD at the mo as Mum-in-law is terminal with cancer she only has a few weeks left and we are nursing her at home. Matter of priorities and she comes first.

For your purposes charge cooling is probably overkill mate.

FMIC is great for drag racing as the really imporant bit is the have as cold an intake as possible.

Personal opinion only, but I\'d say V-mount for you (based on what you said you use it for) the same reasons as I plan to go that route.  The airflow is split between the IC and rad giving the best of both worlds and you can install uprated and larger rad and IC than the stock system so you will see better cooling.

It seems like such a good idea though.

And when you look at the costs of it ..... £450-£500 for the 4x6 pipe then it does seem like a bargain.

IC\'s are way more expensive - £900 for a decent one.

Don\'t think either would be too much of a problem for fitting but the charge cooler also takes up less room.

Done some measurements and it looks as if the charge cooler rad will fit in the slot that the FD intercooler sits.It may mean moving the battery box a bit but with the air pump out of the way there will be room for it all to fit. I want to put the cc-rad in the ic slot as the way i look at it mazda r&r guys designed that slot for airflow for theic so the water will get cooled. :cool

well, i\'m planning to get the feed front bumper so I think I might get it set up as follows...

radiator at the front - obviously a fine mesh there to stop any debris from poking holes in it!

I will use some of the space to run a cold air duct to the induction kit.

I would like to actually put the cc right at the front - in front of the radiator so everyone can see it .... kinda  paralel to the ground right at the bottom?

as for the cc radiator? I think that lovely air vent in the centre of the bumper can be used for that? put the cc radiator right behind there or have a duct coming from there to the cc rad?

what do you think?

Post by: Warthog on December 19, 2004, 07:07:55 PM
I can see where you are coming from but i don\'t think you will have the room to put the cc unit where you want to . You also need to be aware that the shorter and smoother the air flow through the cc the better. You would be sending the air a long way. The only difference with flow is with regard to the water, you can in fact have that flowing to a catchment type container in the boot where you have the flow going via dry ice. This is used when doing multi-runs 1/4 mile drag, it keeps the turbo intake air as cold as possible. They do it in AUSSIE LAND and they run very fast times.Hope this helps.

oh well, it was just a thought! Def think the cc radiator needs to go behind that little central vent eh? That only leaves the cc itself? What about at the front of the engine bay - dead centremounted up near the bonnet - sort of where the ic is at the moment except slightly to the left?so that it\'s the first thing you see when you lift the bonnet?

I\'m not really going for the all out power thing. Just want the car to look good and go really well. The cc def looks like the best value for money. easy to fit too and it looks way cool!

Got a place local that\'ll knock up any hard pipes I can possibly need for it too. I mean what would you rather pay ---- £1000 for a greddy ic  and the pipes to fit it or £600 for the cc and the pipes? Besides the cc will do as good a job if not better! Reckon for cruisin it\'ll be a god bet too - lots of sittin around winding up the chavs and their "cars". the cc could be useful there?!

Have you done a de-cat and got rid of the air pump????
Yes you are right it will sit there. Also when you eventually change over to a single turbo the cc will handle it with ease.
What are you hoping to do mods wise and what have you done so far.????
Title: Getting a new front bumper....
Post by: hmltnangel on December 19, 2004, 08:04:36 PM
Well to start with I aint gonna be using the car much more than the odd quarter mile here and there - maybe a track day once a year and mainly to take to meets. I also like cruisin slowly past the chavwagons that sit around the car parks up here! It really winds them up when I go slow. Only one stretch of road in the area good for zippin down reeeaaallll fast. So the cc does sound like a good idea.

Mod wise - at the moment

The cars in gettin a boot install done - mmmm gonna be nice when it comes back next week.

Not much done performance wise.....

just a new air intake and a stainless exhaust and catback.

Also just about to put some polished intake pipes on soon along with a manuam boost control. Not going to up the boost at the moment - just want it to cut out any boost creep and to ensure that the max boost is 10 psi exactly (don\'t want to bust my engine) thats it.

The airpump will be going soon.

My next real mod is going to be the front bumper - thats why i thought I might as well do the ic and radoator at the same time.

some people have been saying that a cc is less reliable cos of the wter pump?

What you could do is to set up a small warning light that comes on if the pump fails?

Shouldn\'t be too hard eh? that way if the light comes on then stop the car and get it towed home where you can have a spare pump waiting!

Post by: Warthog on December 19, 2004, 09:15:27 PM
The best ideas are always simple. It\'s a simple sytem. If it is a concern then just keep a spare in the boot if the light comes on 4min job--2 x j-clips undone at next garage, top up with water, job done. Also if light comes on stop and loosen one of the joining pipe connecters = total loose of boost = running on normal asperated engine. Not a problem.

So the only question I have left then is - would the 4" x 6" cc be good enough for the uses I need it for? anything bigger just seems like overkill?

The man to ask is Geff explain what you want to do now. But also what you really want to do later. Then buy the size for later. You know it makes sence. Think of all that boost you can run £££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££.
