Title: i am going to buy RX-7, but i have few doubts
Post by: Zyu on December 17, 2004, 04:11:52 PM
i am going to buy RX-7, but i have few doubts
1.) about the insurance.
someone said that there has no one will sell insurance to me for RX-7, because i am too young for it.
is it ture? or how much should i pay?
i am 20 years old, 2 years licence, student, live at bristol.

2.)about petrol consuming.
my friend siad RX-7 consume a lot of petrol. is it ture?
can someone give me some example.
how many miles you drive per month? and how much you spent on petrol? ( i know everyone has different situation. i just want to have example only. )

thanks for anyone give me advice.

there are not many which will insure you, most want you to be over 25, but try elephant, tescos, I believe they have done so before, but shop round is the best answer, as ever insurance co will be diff to diff people.

On average with gental foot, expect approx 18-19 to gallon, if lucky 20-22 on m-way.
On average only expect 15-17 mixed driving from a tank.

Although when you 1st get one you wont get much more than 10-12 to gallon. You\'ll be too busy showing everyone your boost.

If you want to go totally mental, I have seen figures as low as 6-8\'s

Less on track.

buy one - worry later :)

if money is an object then maybe a rx isnt for you

i have a 2nd gen TII - i did about 2500 miles year - petrol wise - i worked on the theory of £40 of juice gets you about 200 miles

but i only use mine as a weekend toy - so those figures arent an issue

so in those miles i probably spend about £500 on juice ( eeekkk better not let the better half read that ! )

you can get insured at your age - but it will be STEEP - i have a friend who is 19 - and to get insured on a TII he is looking around the 1500 mark

im 28 and pay about £260 fully comp ( but its a second car and under classic unsurance - limited to 3K per year )

hope this helps ( and doesnt put you off ! )

when i was a student i drove a mini - how times change eh :)

Thanks

stu

"if money is an object then maybe a rx isnt for you"

i got about 11 grands. so my plan is buy one about 8 grands and spent abot 3 grands on the engine or something else

and i probably can spent about 150-200 pounds per month on my car. but i am not driver too much, i only driver about 2500 miles for 9 months.

grinder, so do u think is it a problem to me?
because i am student, so i cannot spend too much on my car.

Buy the car and save 2k for insurance, and then spend the other grand.

Grinder was trying to give some advise, not Criticize .

Lots of guys buy the cars and then cant keep up with the petrol, servicing and general running.
Great it looks as if you can. You are a lucky student, most dont have two brass farthings to rub (that shows my age)

Good luck and hope to see you and the car at some of the shows next year.

yes, i know grinder\'s advice is well intention.
maybe i  represent myself not very well,
grinder, if i make you feel i am offence to you, i will say sorry about that.
anyway, thanks for anyone who gave me advice.

No problems my friend,
most important make sure its tested before you buy, and try to buy from a reputable dealer, there are several on here, and make sure it has a proper warentee.
For 8k you should get a nice RX and have a little to insure and look after with balance.
150-200 a month should be ample for occassional use roughly a tank a week, approx 150-180 miles a week.

Good luck on the rotary adventure mate.

Just remember to budget for a service every 3,000 miles as well or for the parts necessary to carry out servicing yourself if you plan to get your hands dirty.

Only other thing I\'d suggest is be conservative with your petrol estimates.  I get just under 200 miles from £50 of my FD and that\'s without boosting too much.

honestly, my favour is type r version, hopefuully is 1995. i don\'t care how many miles on clock, because i must rebuilt the engine anyway. but most important is i want a standard car, not a mod one.
how much you think i need to pay?
and "Rx"??? i haven\'t heard this one before.
would you mind give more detail about RX?
Title: i am going to buy RX-7, but i have few doubts

"RX" is just referring to any Mazda with an RX number for example "RX-7"

If you go through the sale adverts on this site you\'ll find a good idea of prices there.

Why do you think you\'ll have to rebuild the engine?
Title: Insurance
Post by: mazda bait on December 17, 2004, 06:32:41 PM
It is possible to get insured.  I got my FD Rx7 when i was 20, but everyone is right the insurance is a \'lot\'! I paid £1700 3rd party fire and theft for limited mileage, garaged and no mods.  I would recommend going fully comp straight off and taking some lessons in driving rear wheel drive cars!;)

You can halve that with an FD :)

When I was a student I drove an Integrale Evo. Now I drive a mini (some times) :D

I think that with your 11k budget, getting yourself an FD for 8k, the rest will go on insurance! :(

All imports now have to be standard to pass the SVA, this might be incorrect but I thought they just changed the rules to that effect.

Running an FD is an expensive car, there may be better suited cars to your budget.

Try to get a UK RX7 if you can.  Insurance is quite a bit cheaper than import insurance.  At 21 with 2 years NCB (3 years ago now) Adrian Flux quoted me £1550 fully comp.

With imports, I really struggled (at 24 with 5 years NCB) to get anything below £1000 and ended up with Admiral for £663 but that only happened as I got called randomly by one of their managers... that was on a standard car.

Thats said, if I were you, i\'d go for something slightly less fancy but Jap still - something like a late S14a 200SX (you could pick up a year 2000 one for circa £5-6k) stick various mods for about £2k on it to give you around 300bhp and enjoy cheaper insurance and lower fuel costs (around 250-300 per tank) with around 25 mpg.  All the mod cons too like a/c, leather interior, full electrics etc etc or  maybe a Scooby of similar age around £7000.

RX7 fuel costs are a serious consideration to bear in mind.  When I had mine, I got put off by the horrific drink problem they have - I drove 80 miles over 2 days to work when my work horse diesel was in the garage and it drank £24 worth of juice - thats 3/4x thirstier than the diesel.  Also, think about it latterally - 15 MPG on the RX7 is over 50% thirstier than a 25 mpg 200SX and 400% more than my diesel...

Try to think about it sensibly and with your head, not your heart - its fantastic to have one (I loved mine) but the costs are VERY VERY real and they will drain your resources just maintaining it basically (eg servicing, fuel, oil, insurance, tyres, pads, discs, filters, air con refills etc).

In your shoes, I\'d buy a powerful jap car, definatley, but i\'d allow several thoudsand left spare to cover any mishaps that happen when you mod as they can and do happen.  Also, spending several thousand on insurance is just daft - if you wait a while that cash could be spent on some serious mods rather than line the insurers pockets :)

you\'ll find a good example without need for a rebuild within your budget mate.  It will depend on the car you buy as to whether or not there is a need to rebuild in the near future.

Besides if you rebuild using new parts the only real costs saving of doing it before it goes pear shaped is that you do it on your timescales.   Up to you bud, but don;t go in and just rebuild it for the sake of it is all I\'m saying.

Grinder mate, how on earth are you doing that????? I get about 170 miles to a full tank (£55-£60 depending on where I fill up!) And mine is a TII as well (ok it isn\'t exactly standard :o but......

Zyu, as everyone has already said an RX7 is a costly venture, but probably no more costly than any other Jap Supercar. £8000 will buy you a good example which should have either low mileage or a rebuild already. If you intend to rebuild spend much less and buy a higher mileage car. Sounds as though you have thought this through, I\'d say go for it, the other options in that price bracket will cost you loads to insure and probably won\'t be exactly what you want (subaru Impreza - difficult to insure now, Early Mitsubishi Evo - III or IV, 200SX s14a, Skyline GTSt, etc they are all good cars, yes they will be a little less thirsty but not much and they won\'t be an RX7)! If you are buying a high performance car fuel costs are always going to be high.

what the hell do you lot do with petrol - put some in the car and then the rest on the floor

and i drive very "petrol safe" , 75 on the motorway with the cruise control on - it drops all boost off and does a decent MPG

i think when i really batter the living sh*t out of it - its more like 9 MPG :)

i havent run the rx7 for about 6 months now - so not sure on the petrol cost for it

but with what you lot are saying the car will stay on the drive :) LOL

and i wish i had 11K spare as a student - ooohhh yeah that would have been nice

Zyu : good luck with the hunt :)

Try admiral by fone.

I tried their online system but they wouldn\'t quote.  They rang me and then offered a quote bypassing the "we won\'t quote" bit on their system and did it for £663 FULLY comp :D

I\'m 24 with 5 years NCB, same as you :)

Personally I found A-Plan the cheapest and easy to deal with.

I\'ll try not to Dave,

Fish Tailed her the other day,  gave it a little bit too much stick in the wet! back end was all over the shop, quiet dual carriage way luckily!!

Got her back under control but clean underwear required! Leather seats so no serious mess to clean up!

Although that will drop pretty quick if you drive with full boost all the time.

I\'ve had 22-23mpg on a long run. However I mostly get around 18mpg and if just driving round town 15mpg can easily be seen. My car is pretty std bar a HKS panel filter.
