Title: Newbie questions
Post by: Matt J on December 14, 2004, 03:53:32 PM
Hi all, first post on here!

I\'ll try and keep it short and sweet cause you probably get alot of the same old Q\'s.

I\'ve had a bit of a read of a few topics but cant seem to find any mention of what power can be had on a standard engine or what parts are uprated during a rebuild if more power is wanted

I\'ve looked at the how stuff works site for the rotary engine and it seems a fairly simple design although its obviously got its flaws, what are the most common problems/failures to a rotary?
Cheers
Matt

Quick reply:

Standard engine and turbos, good for may be 320atws with boost and other stuff to support it e.g. fuel mods and management. Single turbo will make some more but really wants porting for best effect.

Upgrading would include opening out the intake and exhaust ports, oil and coolant system mods, balancing and may be dowelling depending on intended boost.

Most common failures are water seals and compression sealing items with high mileage, and Apex seals with mod\'d engines and bad tuning!

Do you want cheese or chalk?

No comparison, 200SX is a slow wallowy boat alongside an FD. Be it a reliable and economic one :)

Blimey now there\'s a nice problem to have.

S14a are supposed to have really good balance but that\'ll probably cost you more than an FD won\'t it?

Basically just depends if you want a boinger or a rotary, when it comes down to it. Anyway, you gotta come on Sunday, it\'s the only way to make these important decisions!

I sold my 200sx for a FD. Completely different cars (as stated above) imo.
If you have a daily driver and want a pure performance car, get a FD. Otherwise don\'t :)

S13 or 14 btw?

I wish i worked at Royces Gurj! Toyota unfortunately :(

Would have to be a S14a if i went Nissan and i good one can be picked up for 5-5.5k, which ever way i go it wont be a daily driver and it wont be standard power, its time to move on and start looking at some serious power, if i go RX then i may look into a 20B transplant. The other option would be to save a little longer and go for a R32 i might just see how things pan out before i make my mind up but they\'re deffinately the 3 options i\'ve narrowed it down to.

What power are some of the uk RX\'s at?

Well just to put my view in - for what its worth...

I have an fd and my mate has an s14a

as everyone says totally different cars....

the rex is very small and slinky compared the huge s14a which feels like a boat when you\'re in it....

I\'d say build wise the s14a edges it as it\'s damn well screwed together whereas my fd has a few squeaks and rattles from the trim, (my fd is 6 years older than his s14a though).

Peformance wise thers not a great deal in it - the fd is much sharper i\'d say but the s14a is pretty quick too.

If asked to choose - i\'d definetely go with the fd - it turns more heads, it looks better, it\'s faster, sexier and much rarer. It handles amazing too. The only downside to fd ownership is fuel economy which to put it mildly is crap! Besides if you get an fd you can still talk to us friendly lot all the time and when things go wrong we\'re all dying to help out.

Had a bit of a race with a S14a the other day.
My FD has an Apexi PFC and feels very quick,  fair bit quicker than the car I had before - 300zx twin turbo .
So I thought I\'d leave this S14a for dead when he started playing with the FD , I was dead wrong!  It kept up from about 40 to 130, then I pulled away.
Dont know what the guy had done to it but it couldnt have been standard, could it ? lol
Agreed, the fd interior is cheap, plasticky, rattley,  but the looks,   handling and performance are amazing!

Totally agree trev - the fd is a quicker car but with some minor tuning the s14a can be made almost as quick. My mate is just about to fit a new intercooler so I reckon he\'ll be keeping up with me for a while until I get my new IC.

The s14a is a fantastic car .... the power gets put down so smooth it\'s almost like being in a speedboat ... the back of the car pushes itself down and just goes real smooth ... thtats just the problem though - it does feel like a big boat.

Easiest way to compare them ......
the FD is a Spitfire and the S14a is a Hurricane.....
both very similiar .... one a  little smaller, faster, lighter, more agile, and just plain sexier. Though both perfect for what they were designed for.
