Title: Boost controllers and Fuel Cut defendars
Post by: Steve Burnett on December 12, 2004, 12:57:04 PM
This is kind of a continuation from another thread. Instead of hi-jaking it I thought id start a new one.

Okay so the boost controller stops the car overboosting but why fit one if all it does is cover up a problem?
Or is it really a safety device to stop boost spiking in the event of it happening.

Also what does a fuel cut defender do? I just bought a Knightsports one. I think I have an idea but not to sure.

Fitting a boost controller doesn\'t really cover up an overboosting problem but could cure it. It depends on what is causing the problem.... you could have a leak in the vac lines that go to the wastegate actuator, then the wastegate wouldn\'t open.... so the turbo just keeps spinning up.

The PFC (using the stock solenoids) is as good at controlling the boost on a modified car as a turnip would be. Having said that you could probably shove the turnip up the exhaust to give you some back pressure.  :rollin

The FCD will stop the ecu from cutting the fuel when you hit the speed limiter the stock ECU has in it. This cuts the fuel when you hit 180km... whatever that is in british money. This is built into all JDM cars under JDM law.
I honestly couldn\'t tell you if the FCD will also stop the fuel being cut when you hit the rev limiter or overboost the car. But in my opinion there is no such thing as "overboost".... just throw in some more fuel and make use of it :rollin

I believe the FCD cuts fuel when you hit a certain boost level.

It does the opposite, PREVENTS fuel cut when the boost goes up.

so you better make sure its got enough fuel to cope with that boost otherwise its :wave  engine.

The fuel cut is there to stop you from overboosting (not that it does the engine much good!)

But if you were winding the boost up you would put an ECU in...... unless you have deep pockets for a new lump.

I\'ll stick with my Speed limiter explanation being its main function..
