In a moment of madness (i think I may have taken 1 too many blows to the head at kickboxing this week....) I let Tim at RX motors loose with an open mandate to build me a powerful engine. :burnout
His last joyfull words were: \'\'no expense spared then!\'\'
He hung up before I could reply.
I\'m getting scared now........I may have to sell the flat & live in the car when it comes back
Oh yeah - we now know I was properly done by that Moss fella that sold me the car. He said he\'d put new tips in but Tim reckons its never been rebuilt hence why it died: natural causes, old age.
Thanks again to the cowboy that sold it to me....
You can live in a car but you cant drive a house.... :D
Bread & water for the next 10 years
jeez mate sounds like a life changing experience. :D Awesome to know that there are some guys here in the uk doing some fun and fast stuff to 12a\'s. They are so underated. I wish you all the luck. Any firm idea on set up? injection etc...?
cheers, michael.
Yes & no - its hard to get a serious answer out of Tim when he\'s in an ecentric comedy type mood.
So far all I know is: high boost 12a turbo, EFI, Microtech thingamy, 3" all the way loud zorst, BOV.
Maybe\'s are: porting, Water inj/intercooler & goodness only know\'s what else.
I think he\'s feeling creative.....
Buddy, seems kinda scary yet somehow exciting at the same time. Kinda like chicks.
Any sort of time frame for the finished article?
Try getting that information out of Tim!!
eeeekkkkk ! open cheque book surgery ! will be nice to see the results at the end of it.
Tim was at Geffs the other night, had his new housings with him for the purple drag car. Some very aggressive porting produced with some superb workmanship. That thing should fly next year with the big turbo :)
Don, you should be very happy indeed :D
It flys already!!
However, I think you\'ll find mine is the Gentleman connoisseur\'s choice ;)
He took 3 months on my 12at,Don!:D hehe, another 12at with a microtech, damn they\'re getting common!Mine cost £600 fitted, still haven\'t set it up properly, yet. Are you getting an LSD?I\'d imagine your back end will be extremely twitchy,i know mine is with about 200hp and new Toyo Proxes! And how about uprated brakes?i\'ve been very thankful of mine on several occasions!Suspension too,i remember the 13b-rew powered FB Tim built,it had a load of running gear from an FD in it,and it was still a total biatch!Be VERY careful when you get it back.
You paid £600 for a 12AT??!! Fitted!!!???
Nope, the running gear\'s completely standard. I shall have to screw a block of wood under the gas pedal.
I may fit a line lock tho
£600 just for the microtech I think.
I agree with mike about the £600 just fior the microtech. What kind is it? As for brakes. If nothing else then upgrade the front one to at least turbo II spec. For your own safety.
I thought I might fit some Morris Minor hubs I had lying around:D
dont laugh mate, at the moment I have 1098cc of pure terror powering my car and the brakes failed on it today. Scary stuff at 35mph on a wet bit of single track.

hahahaha, that sounds very familiar!Yep,the £600 was just for the Microtech(LT-8),and that was with a set of 4x 550Tii injectors,Tii ignition coils and Tii crank angle sensor. It was beautifully installed, too. As for brakes,i have Black Diamond Drilled and Grooved discs on the front, did have Hawk pads, too, which i thought were shite.Maybe i had a duff set,i\'ve known of plenty of other people to enthuse over them.Oh yeah,i\'m really curious about what dump valve you\'re getting. My original 12at one sounds fabulous!
It\'s gonna be an absolute monster.... When Tim put the phone down he had a ridiculous smile on his face (more ridiculous than usual!) and a rather sadistic glint in his eye (more sadistic than usual!). When we split the block last week, it was quite clear the tips had worn clean out. There was little else to it, no horror story. I\'ve been rumaging around in the "store" for the best 12A Turbo bits we can find, there are plenty to choose from! Just relax and let the mad scientist do what he does best.:D
Wahey!!!
Will it get ported I wonder?
Any bets as to a standing 1/4?
I was chatting to Tim earlier, sounds like he is still formulating some plans for the car!

i reckon sub 12...
open diff, narrow tyres hmmmm mid to high 13 is my guess
Tim ran a 13.2 with a "standard-ish"12a turbo.Depends if Don is as much as a turbo nutter!Tim ran a slower time with NOS!Until it sucked his air filter through his exhaust pipe! Then it surprisingly died... oh yeah, and he got a 14.4 with a standard FD.
Ported? What does that mean? LOL of course it will be!:rollin I\'ve said enough already.... Just really looking forward to working on this.
Ah ha.....so I\'m collecting some clues now:
Porting work
TurboII turbo
microtechy nerdbox
exhaust you can shelter from the rain in
& I\'m asking Tim to TRY & make it look in keeping with the rest of the car....(his looks like birds are nesting under the bonnet!)
Mike, my dear boy, those skinny tyres are 215s I\'ll have you know.
Just flicking through the december issue of fast fours and noticed a black 1st gen pulling very impressive wheel stands off the line.
....Don, do you like wheel stands?:D
your not the only one on here I think trying to put the clues together.;)
Yeah! Wheelie bars & a parachute!! Get in!!!:spank
Lots of porting, but not a bridge port job. Hmm the plot thickens.
You have a PM.
SOOO excited!!
I must have been on the phone to Tim almost every day asking silly questions.
Its getting aggressive porting & custom manifolds this week:cool
Cant wait to get this thing on the rollers.
Looking into LSD (for the car this time...) + new brakes.
Does anyone know how practical independant rear suspension is?
Can anyone recomend better springs & dampers?
Goodness knows what I\'m running (spax I think) it rattles your teeth.
WHYG?
Hey don, are you thinking of converting to IRS at the back? your 7 should have a 5 link rear end from the factory and can be set up to make your car handle extreemly well. Also a fixed rear end will be better for drag racing.
Go the wheelie bars!:D
LSD, gearbox & shocks next year me thinks.
My daily driver is broken down, so I suddenly have higher priorities for the ££.
Just in time for the festive season - doh!!
Sounds like a wicked project don........will love to see it run at rotorstock.
Similar with me.....rebuild, single turbo, apexi power fc.......you think fooking hell how much.....but i think at least once in your life you have to sort a project like this.
Good luck with it all man.
Cheers,
Dan!!
Yes, I think I\'ll actually be in physical pain when I have to write the cheque for this one! I\'ve never spent this much on 1 thing in my life:eek:
i\'m sure it\'ll be worth it
Yes I\'m sure it will too. Will have to tighten belt for 6 months tho.
It may even be ready for the S E meet in jan. Hope so.
Just need to sell the Elford kit....
hey Don, great to hear that the project is well and tryuly on the way. Can yu tell me about the turbo that you ar eselling with the elford kit? I think i recall that someone had said it was a t3 item? Does it use an intergrall wastegate? Is the exhaust manifold standard? do you have photos?
sorry for all the questions. Cheers, michael.
Hi Mike
The elford kit came to me with a non standard turbo a T3 I\'m told - off a cosworth RS200 & 500. The fellow who sold the kit to me was unaware that the elford configuration is different from most other turbo applications in that its draw through bot blow through.
So, you need possitive oil seals to stop the oil being blown through the turbo. Some helpfull chap who\'s a club member clued me up on this.
So I took it to Universal Turbo\'s (as recommended by Tim @ RX motors) in august. They found impact damage and so I had to buy a completely rebuilt exchange unit with the new oilseals.
About £500. First time I used it was to take the car (a new build from bare shell) to RX motors for a check over & shake down & on the way back I lost compression & had to be flat bedded home.
Turns out the "Rebuilt engine" I got with the car had never been apart ever, only painted, and was at deaths door. 1 motorway dash killed it.
As a result turbo has only done 100 odd miles.
The rest of the kit is mint:
New down pipe, new braided oil feed pipe, new boost gauge, new bleed valve,
Everything painted & heat wrapped. Even got new inlet gaskits for it. All you\'d need is a sump gaskit.
It is complete, all inlet/ex manifolds, sump, oilways, SU (serviced), K&N cone filter, the lot.
Only part you may have to modify is the downpipe to suit the exhaust you have. I had to weld on a flange to suit the rotechnics pipe I was using. Easy enough to do , or get done tho.
Can\'t take any new pictures cos the car went to RX motors with the kit on it & it\'s still there. Will attach some pictures of my car with the kit. Hope this helps.
from the other side
thanks for the photos and info don. What price are you looking for all the bits? and will you separate and sell them off separately?
perhaps sadgoth would be interested for his new series 1?
:D
Hey Don, me again, can you tell me what distributer you were running with the old kit? Are you going tobe running a distributerless system with the new set up?
cheers, michael.
from the piccy above it looks like a bog standard 12a dizzy with the vacuum advance plugged.
Thanks again Mike. I have heard of tuners "locking" distributers, where by < if I am right, they lock the advance mechanism at a certain degree but it cant advance or retard. (somebody PLEASE correct me if I am wrong).
I am mostly interested because I am wanting to know what to do with mine!
that sounds about right, the standard dizzy has the weights which change the timing with RPM and the vacuum advance which is just for part throttle running I think. Neither are going to be what you want on a turbocharged car.
The 12a turbo\'s have a special dizzy I think ? I also thought the Elfords had somthing rigged on the dizzy ?
a solenoid that opens at a given amount of boost pressure and retards the timing. It\'s in Don\'s boot... so all the kit is there for the conversion.
Hi Michael
I\'m selling the kit as a whole. Its not the sort of thing you can break - I\'d never be able to sell the rest of it if I did.
Money wise, I know I won\'t get back the £1200 odd it cost me to get together, but I like to get back the cost of the new turbo.
I\'ve had a offer of £600, which I think is a bargain. Thats CHEAP power. My new lump is costing £3k+ & doesn\'t make that much more power than the elford kit.
Dizzy is standard 12a. Dont know what the new lump will use.
So Matt, hows my car comming along? What kind of magic are you lot working on it down there in deepest Dorset?
The wand is waving... that\'s a fact. If you check out Tim\'s website, you can see for yourself! Go to www.rxmotors.co.uk (http://www.rxmotors.co.uk) and follow the links on the left for FB > Mods. The manifold was being fabricated in house this week, all going swimmingly!;)
Such tiny things 12as - hard to beleive they\'ll pull a car at all!
Looks nice & clean tho. Can\'t wait to hear it running.
Looked at that strut yet Matt? Bit worrying that.
Got some custom manifolds. Looks comlex
Hiya Don, the new exhaust manifold looks great! It must be getting close now?
Your guess is as good as mine! I expect it\'ll take some setting up once its all together. Got some suspension problems to sort out too, so......doubt it\'ll be sooner than mid feb?
Perhaps a sweepstake? My bet is another 3 weeks.
Getting close now! Exhaust is on, inlet is on. Be running soon :)
ooh I saw it today! looking good, nice turbo set up there! Looks very promising there mate!
Been really busy on your car.Haven\'t gone over your £10K budget yet!
Is that a close up or is my new turbo really the size of a small moon?
It looks fantastic & shiney! (don\'t recognise anything under there now)
Wonder what it sounds like?! :)
****! Waddayamean £10K!!!!
Now Don...... if my memory serves me correctly I do recall that you would be hoping, ..was it? or simply wanting something that would have the same amount of power to your original elford set up??? Now, I am reall, really, really, no expert but is that an injection perfection throttle body? or some jenvey thing? and that snail is big enough to put a smile on the most miserable of faces.
so eith er you really didnt know what tim was doing or you have been planning a verrrrrrrrrrry nice and quite a substantial set up all along. :D
looks great too ya bugger.
thats looking a bit special under there now, the TB looks good, what are those injectors from ? using the hose looks a lot simpler than having to make a fuel rail.
There\'s a reason why you don\'t recogise anything under there :rollin Tim\'s such a meanie! Your car does look like it\'s gona fly though. Microtech, turbo, oil cooler and inlet manifold are all blossoming from prototype to finished article. Fuel supply and throttle body are inching closer and closer, it\'s looking like a flying machine
Well, apart from the fact that a 12AT was going in there, I knew nothing of the feindish plans for my car.
I left Tim with an open mandate within the budget to make my car faster in which ever ways seemed best to him.
As for power figures - a standard 12at makes about 165BHP.
Mine was never going to be standard my dear chap! ;)
That isn\'t my bleedin\' car is it!
Mines got a strutbrace & no electric fan! (& stainless nuts)
:reallymad
thats evil :rollin but amusing !
oops, sorry, did I post the wrong picture?:rollin Try this one!
Tim, up till now I have heard nothing but good about you and your work. But showing him a picture to wet his appetite that wasnt his car! evil. just plain evil.:rollin
Grrrrrr!
Well MY CAR had best end up looking that shiney & posh else there\'ll be trouble!
Im sure I can see rust under there!
Whats going on???!!!
Anyhoo,
Tim, am I getting Water Inj or an intercooler?
And does anyone supply silicone hoses for 12ats?
Clearly not an intercooler cos its got the filter on already.
Doh!
Are you referring to the bog roll shoved down the comopressor exit Don? ;)
Oi, that\'s top of the line "blue roll"!:D
No, the green spongey thing, but maybe thas not mine either....
Don, you need to get your butt down to that workshop to see what exactly is going on with that car of yours:D
Or not, coz this thread is not only informative but funny as well:rollin :rollin
What & spoil the surprise?
I trust the RX guys (even if they are a just a BIT ecentric, there is after all a very fine line between genius & complete insanity....) to do what ever they fancy with it.
I have no doubt it\'ll be worth the wait.
Anyway its blinkin miles away - im not doing that too often!
QuoteAnyway its blinkin miles away - im not doing that too often!
yes but the run is a nice series of A roads with quite a few twistys! Not so much fun it the Chav-alier that sounds disturbingly like a diesel (even though it isn\'t  )
The TB on my rover sounds like a police siren in the distance. On last legs me thinks, so no long distance jaunts.
Will be going by train to dorest when the big day arrives.
I wonder if I\'ll make the march southern meet?
Waddaya think Tim & Matt?
