Title: Buying A Rx7 With Blown Engine ..price
Post by: ONE on December 02, 2004, 05:54:58 AM
Hello

It’s nice to be part of the Rx7 community

I am thinking of buying a 3rd Gen. Mazda RX7/Efini

I have been told one of the best ways to guarantee reliability is to Buy a car with a blown engine then take it to one of the U.k\'s engine rebuilders.

I have a few questions

1.  What do 1992 manuals with Blown motors sell for???
Has anyone one on the board sold one?? If so for how much??

2.  If i opt for the fitting of 2 piece or Ceramic Apex seals can I be certain the engine will not blow up for at least 20 K

3. Can these engines take abuse once rebuilt (if they are well maintained)??

4.What kind of MPG do you see??
:(  I have had a Wrx type RA and tuned GTO so bad MPG wont be to much of a Shock.

Thanks in advance

G\'day,

can\'t say if this is a really good Idea, or if you save any money or not. Decent RX-7 with low mileage should be a better choice for you. RX-7 will not blow as quick as many people think, it depends on the previous owner and about how and if any him serviced the car. Cars with blown engine will probably have a high mileage so other things may need service as well. (maybe it will be necessary to replace shocks and springs or in more wors case to replace all the bushes which will ending is high $$$$ bill)

1) Don\'t know exactly for how much cars are sold for in UK, but I think you should get a decent car for about 3 or 4K.

2) 20K shouldn\'t be a problem to a rebuild engine even if the rebuild was done with stock parts. Mazda seals are good, using ceramic seals has just one advantage, you can reuse them at next rebuild. How ever, stock seals should do the job well enough to get very high mileage. But it depends on the quality of rebuild and the things which may need replacement.

3) It\'s highly recommended to port your engine due to rebuild. It will open your the option to tune your car on a more wide rage of power gain. Many of the high power RX-7 out there have a rebuild done to it with porting option. I think they are just a few (if ever) RX-7 out there with stock ports with about 400RWHP.

4) MPG depends on your driving quality. Pushing hard, will end with a very low MPG, decent driving will give much better MPG. I see about 13Liters/100 km on my RX-7 driving "normal".

Hi and welcome, here are my answers to your questions:

1. What do 1992 manuals with Blown motors sell for???

Seen one sell for 2k, if you look at it this way - you would pay 5k - 7k for a working one now subtract about 3k to cover the rebuild and then a bit more cos people don\'t want the hassle.

2. If i opt for the fitting of 2 piece or Ceramic Apex seals can I be certain the engine will not blow up for at least 20 K

Nothing is certain.

3. Can these engines take abuse once rebuilt (if they are well maintained)??

What is abuse for a normal car is the norm for the RX7.

4.What kind of MPG do you see??
I have had a Wrx type RA and tuned GTO so bad MPG wont be to much of a Shock.

Best i got was 22mpg

Worst 8mpg

Mixed i would say about 16mpg depends how you drive.

Thanks Gwan and  Iwan :)

If any other People on the forum have any answers to my questions please post

The engine builder I spoke with reasoned that by buying a FD with a Blown Motor and getting it fixed
I would know for sure that the cars engine was in a good state and that it would be better in the long run.

DAMM :eek 6 MPG and 16 Average :eek

MY GTO  (http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/7/web/559000-559999/559527_19_full.jpg)is better On MPG
But The RX7 Will make an amazing INITIAL D Machine

Id be happy it I got 16 mpg average.  Its nearer 12 for me lol.

Not sure how easy finding a blown one would be.  Most people fix it then sell as broken they arnt worth much.

Thanks

J4P RX

Thanks for the opinions I have been told there are usually a few knocking about on the net in the U.K.
On forums and online auctions

Maybe
ro284  Can point me in the right direction ,so I can find one.
I am not in a hurry anyway
I got to sell the chest wig first.

DRAGON

Man what can I say.. I love the Dragon logo
I saw a picture of your white 12.7-second RX in the December 2003 issue of Japanese performance
And it looks amazing
I would love to have the same type of Dragon decal
(the one coming from the left rear Arch in Gold)on ,my Rx when I get it . ;)

I\'m not sure I want to go the Jap route I know it will take around 2-2.5 months to get the car on the road.
(Waiting for ship-shipping (possibility of ship sinking (My friend lost 3 Really nice cars because this happened to him )
Waiting for clearance-Doing the MOT-DVLA then Doing the Interpol Check-Then registering..........very Long )

I appreciate the gesture I just want to get a blown car in the U.K. and
Give the car to a specialist and a week later drive it out...:burnout

I got my 93 on the autotrader site....ready to go... no problems as yet, well a few minor replacements of worn hoses and rad caps but less that 300 quid in total... and thats at £65/hour labour

they arent as expensive to main tain as some people maintain.

I am sure ytou could find some with blown engines on there... if you do decide to go for one that works I wouls suggest rying to find one that is as standard as possible, so you know that if you do decide to upgrade/mod anything that ti is running perfectly as standard before hand.  and you know it will have been done properly.

though I think a rebuild will take more than a week...

once you get a rex I am certain you wont buy another car in your life.... hope fully the rumours are true and the RX7 is being revived due top the popularity of the RX8...

be nice to see what they could do these days with a rotor...

ok I will stop waffling on now

erm hard question to answer but a rough guide, as I am probably the only member on this site with an RX with ceramics and min 20k under belt, although technicly sold car last month.

Firstly I used  Hayward Rotary, there a link at the top of the forum board, in my opinion, the top engine builder in the uk at the moment and the reasons I say that his race engines have won races than anyother tuner/builder in the UK, he is a friend of Dr Ienetti (spelling) the guy that makes the ceramic seals, the only tuner I know using ceramics, and whilst in his company on several occassions, he has recieved phone calls from other tuners/builders asking advise. So that why I personally use Mr Encylopedia.

If I was thinking of ceramics again without hesitation I will get the engine dowled like it is in my black car, will withstand higher boost levels.

My yellow RX7 had a Hayward rebuild in in the 2 years that I had her, I used her on track at Brands 3 times, Silverstone once, N/Burg ring once, Spa twice, Drag raced at Shakespere once and dragged at Pod in excess of half doz times. On top of that she was used on the rd quiet hard at times, inc 2 trips to Le Mans where the trip there and back are always off the clock, and showing other marques what the RX is capable of. So all in all a very hard time for her, never once let me down and was never refreashed inbetween.

Apart from using the best incredients and best engine builder you also need the best tuner, again I used Carl Hayward and my single turbo was a small TO4e, used as it spooled up nice and quickly and had little lag, although 2 years down the line, if doing again I would betempted with something a little bigger :D  .
Why do I say Carl as the best tuner. My yellow RX7 had the biggest bhp for any to4e run car here, producing 365 at the hubs, which is as much as a lot of bigger turbos are currently making. I dont know of anyone with a dyno chart evidence to show larger on a to4e.

Probably the most important item in this whole list is the tuning as the best engine will go pop if not tuned properly, and if a ceramic engined goes pop it will do more damage (possible) than a steel seal.

Hope this helps, I\'ll go get my flame coat so the others can jump on me.

Thanks for taking the time g11ary

Thats real good information.

The kind of use you put into your car is what i want to put into mine.
I was thinking i would not risk taking an rx7 to the Ring in case it lets go :(

BUT your set up sounds SAFE

How do i get into contact with Dr Ienetti ??
How much does he charge for 6 seals ,i have been given a good price from the states but its always good to compare .

I want to use ceramics as although they are a little more expensive ;) than steel ones.it will be chaeper then having 2 rebuilds .
And its another good reason to get a blown car ..so its Done properly.

You wont get to Dr Ienetti, Speak to Carl, his good friend. He will supply them to you, depending on which ones you want and the exchange rate about £1400-£1500 or give or take.

Max and George have probably driven the ring as much as any one here - and they arent on ceramics, just standard 2 piece steel mazdas like the majority. Tuning is the key. Ceramics still break if u ping them enough. Sure they may live longer than some other seals but the key is to tune the thing so it doesnt detonate in the first place...

Cant say I\'ve used ceramics, and I know many people swear by them - but there are also a hell of a lot who dont have problems with and even prefer \'conventional\' seals.

I\'m not saying ceramics arent worth it, just that u shouldnt expect them to be indestructible - they break like any other seal if the tunings not right.

Are you intending on building your own motor?

and your Thoughts on ceramics

The major advantanges of ceramics are that they do not wear like the steel seals and also whilst not indestructable as Rich has said they are stronger than any steel seal.
If they do go due to poor tuning then they do cause damage to the engine but so do steels.
If you build your engine with ceramics seals then when the engine needs a refresh you can reuse them along with your rotor housings. You allways have to replace steel seals.
At the end of the day the tuning on any engine is important.Any engine will go wrong if not tuned properly.
Of course the down side is that they are expensive.not quite as much as Gary indicated for the one piece and about that  for 2 piece.
There are cars that have run both steel seals and ceramics that have had problems since going to Belgium and Germany, but once again the primary reason for this is likely to be tuning.
If you do build your engine with ceramics then tuning by a proffessional is probably the most important thing to be budgeted for.

Regards
Carl

P.S. Rich,thanks for your input.

Carl, I\'m interested in knowing more about ceramic seals before I collect my next Rex after Christmas which I intend to have some work done on. I\'d heard that ceramics are more likely to fail in an extremely short time (like instantly) if the engine dets as they shatter, and the ceramic pieces can take out a lot more than steel seals do when they melt. Is there any truth in this, only I\'m not sure how knowledgable the person who told me this is?

Again - no seal is indestructible - dont tune it wrong and your seals will be fine :)

If u have a spectacular failure the insides of your motor are likely going to be mince meat whether u have 3 bust steel seals per rotor, or 3 bust ceramics; the worst inside of an engine I\'ve seen was with ceramics but bust is bust at the end of the day - a major failure will likely wreck the lot regardless of seal material...

I will go for the poor mans sequential twin turbo bypass to
get the turbos working at the same time.
maybe i will get it ported too .

As for tuning .
I know a bit about mapping .
whats the best ECU option .
Do you guys Chip your ECU\'S (If so what programs do you use) or do you prefer a Apexi power FC route.

I know about runing with uberdata or Hondata and the principles are the same.

How much do you retard the ignition by on 98 Optimax ???
As I have been reading about tuning 91-93 Octane American eyerack Juice.

I have a very good wideband AFR meter with logging and i will use a EGT gauge too.
