I agree with Sam, looks like a relocation kit. The middle picture tells more details, looking at the location its where the oil filter goes.

the most obvious advantage is that u can access to the filter a lot more easily when u want to change it!!!!

I didn\'t think they were that bad to get too ... certainly not worth all that £££\'s for braided hoses and stuff. I would have thought there would be another reason, like you can fit a larger filter ?

Brian, ease of change for the filter. Mike if you wanted to run a bigger filter, looking at some old US posts you could run a 12A filter.

When you think that the FD\'s filter is the same size as an MX-5\'s. Seems a little small for a performance car.

Talk about the owner going over the top, as mike said they are pretty accessable. Then I guess he takes his car to a garage to get work done so it\'s of no use to him but rather his mechanic if it\'s just ease of fit?? Mayve it\'s been relocated as there is something fitted in the oil filters original position. What they may be I have no idea.

maybee its another engine dress up thing ? lots of shiney hose = more HP :D

As for the oil filters being small , they are the same oil filter for the whole mazda range ( I use the same one on my 1st gen, my 323 and my dads 626 which is a span of 10 years ! ) and I have been assured by Mazda (via my Dad who used to work for them) that the small filters have more filter area and perform better than the old "big" filters

Depends on who you trust ... the big filters are still available from FRAM etc. but having seen an engine failure from a poorly designed pattern part oil filter I would never skimp on what is such a cheap item in the first place.
