Right need a bit of advice from you guys, im selling my supra and planing on importing myself an rx7 but do i buy a high mileage 100K KMs ish car (cheap) and expect to be rebuilding the engine soon or do i buy a low mileage 50K Kms (not so cheap) and get a good few miles out of it?
Are there any other parts of the car that could potentially be knackered after 100K kms like gearboxes or diffs?
im planing on getting a 1994 Type r and a high miler would cost me about £5000 and a low miler about £7000.
any advice much appriciated.
If you are gonna buy a high miler for £5k and then spend £3k on a rebuild then buy the lower mileage one.
If you are gonna rebuild the engine yourself for approx £1.5K then get the high miler???
Although if you buy a rebuilt engine one here thats been rebuilt already its gonna be approx £7k - £9k depending on mods of course???
Gurj:wave
ok, cheers gurj. How about the rest of the car, anything else that would be likely to need replacing on a 60,000 miler?
Id probably rebuild the engine myself, i like taking engines apart and it would be nice to see how it all goes together!
High mileage will take the same toll it will on any car:
Body will have more dents and dings
Interior will be flakey and worn (pre-96 cars especially)
Some cars may be starting to rust - UK cars especially!
Turbos and drive train will be worn
Suspension components will be past their sell by
The last is an important one. The FD is renowned for being an awesome handling car - they often arent after a lot of miles though when shocks, springs and bushes are knackered. And its not cheap to replace ALL of the cars bushes...
Ideally I if were going to buy cheap I would get as late a car as poss with a dead motor.
ok so it sounds like i would probably be best going for a low miler 30,000 miles ish. im going for a 94 because i dont want all the hassle of the SVA test, especially if the cars already modified because it would all have to be put back to standard.
cheers guys
Didn\'t think of what Rich just said,
See if you can get a modded rx with a blown engine, that way the car should be ok as modded and then you can rebuild the engine when it gets here???;)
righto, can you rebuild the engine stronger so it can run higher boost without shortening the lifespan?
Having done some research now i can probably get a 30,000 miler in good nick for about £5500 and an 80,000miler in not such good nick for about £2000. im going to try and get an unmoded one so i can decide what to do with it.
so is it worth saving £3500 and rebuilding the engine & changing bushes etc? id probably get coilover suspension anyway.
If you are looking to run high boost then perhaps while the engine is being rebuilt it might be an idea to either get it street ported or bridge ported.
Although a bridge port would leave the car diffecult to use as a road car??? as i believe the idle will be around 3000rpm!!!
Street port would be better for usual driving.
Life span of the engine is diffecult to engage as if the car is used as a road car without much high boost driving then can last up to 70000miles, but if you are looking to use as a track / drag car the life span will be alot less longer.:(
To throw a spanner in the works......
A low mileage one may be close to a rebuild.
A high mileage one may have already been rebuilt.
I think whichever you choose - ie expensive low mileage one, or cheaper high mileage one - you should keep in mind that it may, or may not, be close to rebuild time. And even a low mileage or a recently rebuilt one can go bang just like that.
are there any rx7 specialists in Kent?
