Title: New Member! :) no RX :(
Post by: gerlewis on November 26, 2004, 06:46:01 PM
Hi guys, Im Ger. This is my first post!

I currently drive a 205 mi16 with 200bhp per tonne, but am looking for something a little more mental for next year.

My current car of choice is a RX7, followed by a TVR chimera. Ive been reading the buying guides and for sale threads with interest.

I really like the idea of a RX, but I havent yet seen one in the flesh. The worries I have is an endless list of problems, which is why I keep thinking about the TVR (ironic eh!), Its seems as though the TVR will put out as much power, and as its a V8 theres no engine trickery to go wrong. As someone once told me \'there aint no replacement for displacement\'

But my heart is on an RX7 i must admit. Can anyone suggest why an RX7 is a beeter bet than a TVR?

Anyway, Im thinking of spending about 6-7k in feb/march, and would ideally like a rebuilt one, or a low mileage one, this seems more important than getting a newer one with high miles.

I hope you guys are patient cos I might have a lot of questions for ya!

Cheers, good forum by the way.

Ger

Because its not a bath tub :D

When I got one I was considering a Griff though, but I know that my FD is faster than most TVR\'s anyway.  The power outputs are a little suspect after seeing some RR figures ;)

one of the managers at work used to have Chimera, it didn\'t used to be parked at work that often but I saw it leave on a flat bed on more than one occasion !

The rx will be more reliable I think but it will never sound as good as the TVR without adding a few rotors.

I had a play with a Tuscan S on the way back from Le Mans this year and there was nothing in it.  Think it suprised him a little.  So a moderately modded FD should be a Chim beater.  Chim has the benefit of top down summer action though.  From what I read on PistonHeads TVR reliability seems a tad worse than the FD.

All said though for 6-7k you\'re going to be looking at something that may need a rebuild in the near future (i.e. < 10k miles) in either car.  A decent rebuild FD would set you back about 8k.

Now Iain mentions money, thats going to be about half of whats needed for a decent TVR anyway.

If the weather is reasonable then there should be a few people at oulton park on sat 27th November for an open pit lane track day. TBH the RX7 Type R is only 225bhp (ish) per tonne standard, what have you done to your pug to get 200 bhp ???

They are amazingly quick cars and first look and you fall in love. Plus it\'ll go round corners much faster than the pug ! maybe sideways, but faster :)

mi16 is an awesome car but yeah gota luve the RX7 like Iain i had a play the other month with a tuscan S & well so funny the look on his face (not tat i was in any way looking at anything but road at that speed lol
by your description mental it\'s gota be the 7 TVR\'s are great i guess but strike me as a more money than sense car but that\'s probably ignorant & shallow of me you\'ll soon get to know me as a more knowledgable type if you hang round (http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/ups/dvx_rune/smooch.gif) lol.
Anyway i\'m talking poop now the stella has kicked in......lol
Welcome & enjoy thou matey we\'re all friendly really....

Hello, seen you on the 205 gti forum haven\'t i.

I have had my rex for over a month now, there great motors handle v. well (Not sure about better than my pug tho) especially at higher speeds.

Drop me a line on MSN and i\'ll chat more about them.

Oh and the fuel bills are silly!

yeah im on the 205 forum.

Just starting to look at what else is about in the world of motoring, and these RXs seem like a great car!

I have a mi16 engine conversion with cams and stainless exhuast and induction.

Anyhow. my msn is ger@breathe.com

I guess I may be able to stretch closer to 8k when the time comes. Another alternaive seems to be a r33 GTS-T. Whats the general concensus on those?

Cheers for all the replys!

Essentially FD\'s are super reliable if maintained well, the only pit fall is if the engine blows, which if you\'ve got a rebuilt one and has been maintained well then it shouldn\'t be a problem. Depressing thing with the RX is there are no half measures, the car is either fine or it\'s blown meaing full rebuild, but that also means that 99.9% of the time you know that when you get in and turn the key you\'ll get to where you want to go:D Now i\'m not sure that is true about the TVR. Just take a look here and on fduk in the events sections and you\'ll soon see how many people are now driving to the ring and on track in their FD\'s and as far as I\'m aware not one car had a major problem or even a problem at all
:bandit

An Mi16 205 is a sweet motor and I would be tempted by one as a track car, however the rx is also an extremely good track car and has some serious power on the straights. The cars are very similar and I think that if you were to get a skyline, it simply wouldn\'t give you the same kind of kick. And speaking of a TVR chimera, one was at Donington last weekend, on the straights I was pulling away from him and when we had to stop due to someone rolling their car  he said "that\'s got some power hasn\'t it?!?, what have you done to that?" and with that I replied "suprisingly m8 it\'s a completely std import" ;)

Hope my little rant aids your decision.

Paul:)

I quite fancy a TVR tuscan but until funds willing the rx7 is your better bet, just as quick just as eye catching and just as head turning!!!!

Also from what i gather from other people TVR\'s aren\'t the best for reliability so............... get a rx7 kiddo;)

You would probably find that the power that you could get from the same money as a tvr would easily be much more ! You could have a big single turbo car for a few grand more and then that would just be mad !

I\'m not saying this is standard of all TVRs but, a mate has a 97 R plate 450 Chimera which is really only a fair weather car and he averages £4k per year at Henley TVR on servicing and repairs. in the last year he did 1000 miles between MOT/services and that 1000 miles cost him £3200! excluding petrol  I would say the Rex is a much cheaper and more reliable option. BTW his car is still worth £15k even with that track record so for £7-£8k you\'d either be looking at an absolute dog of a Chimera / Griff or a nice TVR S3. In my opinion, NO CONTEST!

the Skybus is a different animal, not as pretty, a strong engine and reliable but I always think they are more of a GT than a true sportscar (I know the GTR croub would disagree but hey ho)
