How much did you guys pay to get your engine mapped? (although we all have different mods)

Will be getting this done soon and dont wanna be ripped off, also is there anywhere around essex to get it done?

Andy, cost depends on where you take it and who is mapping it.

The closest you you would be either Abbey Motorsport (Westerham, A25) or Guy at Sheerness, sorry cant remember the company name.

It also does depend quite a bit on how much the car is modded too.

WGT charged me £287.00 (almost stock car), which i thought was a bit dear (or is that me being a tight git?).
They did weld the wide-band O2 sensor thingy on the downpipe as well.

Cheers

I think with mapping you are also paying for the experience/knowledge of the mapper, I would like to get my car mapped once I have the 1200 injectors in place, I found the prices to be from £200-250

Title: Things I think I\'ve learned about mapping
Post by: Shark on November 25, 2004, 02:22:41 PM
make sure that you have a good conversation with whoever is mapping your car while it is being done.
If you are asked no questions, are you actually getting the map you want or even need?

You should be able to learn at least a bit about what is being done - yes there will be some trade secrets and your tuner isn;t going to tell you them all, but at the very least make sure that they understand what you want from it and are taking that into account when mapping.

For example -
- How much boost do you want to run?
- Is low end pickup important to you?
- are you looking for economy? (LOL with an FD)
- do you want to deliberatly leave the fuelling a bit rich in preparation for your next mod to save another  couple of hundred quid for remapping when you do that?
- are you planning to run the car throughout winter? if so and it;s being mapped on a hot day make sure that attention is be paid to the fuelling adjustments the ECU makes according to intake temps?  - Vice-versa should hold true as well.

Apologies if anyone thinks I\'m talking bollox and that I should just blindly trust my chosen tuner to know what I want better than I do, and to do a good job .   :rollin

Depending upon the mods I\'d expect to pay about £250 or more
Cheapest would be for a standardised map for common mods with minimal individual attention that is.

Going up for more attention to your needs.

If you have a heavily modded rex then expect to pay a lot more for the map as much more individualised attention will be required and a standard map that the tuners start with may need much more than tweaking and tkae more of their time.

If it\'s being mapped on the road instead of the rollers, budget for a bit of fuel too :D  :rollin

Just as a small add-in to that, is it necessary to have any special tuning parts installed.  By that I mean I have a standard RX7, but have just bought a PFC and getting a new exhaust (inc downpipe).  I don\'t have an O2 sensor, but I guess one is needed for tuning?

Can the tuning be done on just rollers or is it adviseable to take it out on the road?  If so, would it be worth getting an O2 sensor fitted before hand?

Cheers

you can do it without an O2 sensor.

Rollers or road is a preference/necessity thing.
You can do either and argue which is better.  Map it where you\'ll drive it or under optimum control?  You pays your money and takes your choice.  Just make sure you\'ve thought about why you want it maped and what you want from it and then communicate with your tuner.

Cheers for that guy\'s, thats a big help.

The only mods are de-cat, HKS Super Drager exhaust, HKS filters and a Greddy Profec B Spec II.

Would this be in the £200 group ?

Thanks

If you are having it done on the road, I would strongly recommend using a wide band lambda sensor. If done on a set of rollers, they should have one to hand.

As Fish said, you must invest in a wideband if tuning yourself. Having an EGT guage is very usefull too. Bare in mind too, that once mapped on the dyno, your fuel ratio will tend to be richer when driven on the road.

just out of interest what is the base map like ?? ..

my car is currently 100% standard other than a RE-A cat back exhaust .. i\'ve bought a PFC and plan to install it shortly.

until i get the downpipe/decat am i correct in assuming its ok to run the car on the base map ? .. the £250 odd doesn\'t bother me at all but i don\'t really want to spend that money if im going to have to have it remapped once these items are in place ..

was thinking of upping the boost ever so slightly as well once the PFC is installed.

Ta muchly

Steve

Base map is very safe and will run de-cat, induction kit and uprated down pipe.
You will find it will run smoother ironing out the transition between 1st & 2nd turbo:D  Be very cearfull about upping de boost though you dont want to run lean.
