Title: MY TYPE X, pic\'s
Post by: ro284 on November 17, 2004, 09:07:15 PM
A couple of pic\'s of mine,
This is my dream car, I particularly wanted a type X with sun roof, cruise control, and full Bose and leather, but i wanted a manual, not auto, air/con, and aftermarket alloys, 255 x 17 tyres, i haven\'t seen many manual type X, and a jap model, more power! when i was looking for a rex, and i looked a lot! i had decided whatever colour it was i would re-spray it silver, if it did\'nt have a sun roof i would have changed the roof! this one was sprayed silver this year, new wheels & tyres! & t-timer.
Unfortunately? the engine needed a rebuild. and previous owner could\'nt stretch to that, so i bought it knowing that! and at what i thought was a good price, as it had everything else i wanted. and only genuine 50k,
I took the engine out, but decided not to rebuild it myself, I got Chris Philip to do it for me, after he kindly confirmed it was seal failure, a good clue was water gushing out of filler tube when running,
As the engine had got too hot too many times, he found that both front and rear plates were distorted, the seal had broken down because of corrosion, i think its important to emphasize that it would have had a longer life had it had more anti corrosion coolant in its past, but it is 12 years old! anyway new rotor housings, plates seals, bearings, viton hoses where needed, etc, anything needed, all put together by Chris, which i was lucky to see being done.
Basically a new engine, all run in now, running beautifully, and will stay pretty much standard, i\'m getting on a bit, and its certainly enough power for me! this is a my dream car, the whole car feels like a new one, and is a great drive, and to think i used to dream of owning a Harley, Ferrari! or a Vincent Black Shadow! (thats an old motorbike!) well all of them would\'nt come close to this, truly fantastic car, the RX7.
So big thanks to Chris for all his meticulous work, help, and advice, and all hours speedy work, Sorry to go on a bit guys, but it took a long time to realize this dream, Thanks for looking. (some pic\'s to follow)

Many thanks Gman for help with pics! i have included the seal pic again, as this is something which can be avoided, by using a good coolant/antifreeze with somthing to protect against corrosion in it, once it gets to this stage its all down hill, as all too quick the engine gets so hot apparently things start to distort, i had often wondered what was meant by the seals have gone, now i know,

Very interesting pic of the corroded end plate. I would\'ve expected the rotor housings to go first, what sort of condition where they in? You\'re spot on with the antifreeze, a good inhibitor is essential for rotaries especially considering their design. Did you read any of the threads where we disgussed Evans NPG+ waterless coolant? I recon you\'d do well to give it a try, especially since you\'ve got a nice freshly re-built engine to preserve.

Hi mate, For this year i have used a lot of top quality antifeeze,
strong mix, as i plan to flush it in the spring, then i will think about waterless coolant! i have just done a thousand miles so run in now, i was surprised at the damage done by corrosion though which is why i took the pic, but the car is 12 years old, the rotor housings were pretty good really, that surprised me as well,

That\'s lovely, looks so smooth in silver! Out of interest, was it sprayed in a mazda silver or an after-market one? A rare beast too, first manual Type-X i\'ve seen!

Can i be a little cheeky and ask how the leather is holding up after 12 years?

Pleased you have managed to buy your dream car...a great choice too! Having just spent the last 2 days reading an amusing thread on a Ferrari owner\'s club, you\'ve definitely done the right thing! Great looks, exclusivity and stunning performance.

Congrats! :wave

Thanks Adrian,
As i said i wanted the silver, and i asked previous owner who says it was sprayed to the original colour code, which i think might be Silver Stone, i cant match it though so far, and iv\'e just sprayed the black front spoiler/splitter with a merc silver, not far off! and better than black!
The leather is really good, very pleased with that, which i think is down to the car only done 50k miles,
i am even having a new windscreen fitted tomorow, after i got hit by a high speed stone! it will all be new again at this rate.
Cheers Bob

Think you\'re right Bob, all version 1~4 FDs (before jan \'99) that were silver were indeed Silver Stone metallic, i think the next version (5) changed the colour slightly and called it Highlight Silver metallic, and the final build (version 6) changed the colour again to Sunlight Silver metallic. Not that anyone could tell the difference between them though!!

Always surprising how much better the FD looks with a lick of paint on the splitter!! Unfortunately it might mean a re-spray every now and then but it must be a small price to pay!

Bit unlucky having to replace the windscreen so soon, but from the sounds of it you are driving it fairly regularly and as with any true sports car it can hit the wallet hard and fast from time to time!

I like tha Mazda metallic silver, the merc silver looks a bit like a christmas toy colour!
Brand new genuine Mazda screen fitted today, cost £50 on insurance, the guy reckoned it was the only one in the country, there must be more i reckon, they usually fit pattern ones he said, with no mirror fixing place,
nice dark tint at the top, well happy,

Think i\'ll fit new wipers and flush out the washer bottle now,
