Title: 13B swap for Gen. one
Post by: professor on November 16, 2004, 03:36:37 AM
My son and I would like to do an engine and transmission swap in an 84 (currently with a 12A Auto).  I have a 13B with a 5 speed from a 90 FC.  It seems like it should be do able, but I need to talk with someone who has done it for first hand knowledge.  What are the pitfalls we will encounter?  Some of the things I thought of would be: fabricating engine and tranny mounts, mating the electrical systems, physical size with intakes, differential swap may also be necessary, and probably a hundred other things.  I have an entire 90 donar car for the harness, ECU, and any other parts we could salvage.  If anbody can help I sure would appreciate it.  Thanks in advance.

It should be more than do-able, the later 1st gens had 13B\'s in them anyway.  Is it N/A or turbo?

I would reccommend talking to one of the specialists about it though, would also recommend putting the steering rack etc from the FC in too (if it will fit).

I think Pip, Carl et al will be able to give you better advice when they see this thread.

Anyway, welcome!

I see you are in the US, most of the parts for your swap are available from Mazda as the GSL-SE model had a 13B which was very similar to the one you have from the 2nd gen (I presume it isn\'t a turbo)

As you say the transmission mounts are different and the engine mounts will need to be swapped with GSL-SE items (will need a front cover for the motor) + the sump will need to be changed for a GSL-SE item.

that is by no means even a short list of the parts required , but the basic chassis is capable of taking a 13b NA engine with almost no other mods, obviously brakes etc. are a good idea to uprate at the same time though as I think your car will be a basic model.

Cheers ~ Mike
Title: HELP NEEDED for 13b to 12a car ! ! !

Thanks for the information so far.  Is either oil pan able to be modified to the needed GSL-SE configuration?  What is the critical difference?  I can easily fabricate engine mounts, but what is needed for the front engine cover?  Since I have all of the 90 to use as parts, could I adapt the brakes and or suspension to fit the 84?  I think my biggest concern is the electrical system.  Is it better to keep the 84 harness and modify, or put in the 90 harness and modify?  Does anyone have a log / pictures of an engine swap such as this?  How can I get in touch with the people who have done this and would be willing / able to give me pointers?
