Title: Arh, Power FC what are you doing to me ????
Post by: shaunwil on November 14, 2004, 02:04:23 PM
Right, i\'ve just been trying to fit my Power fc. Just done it about three times and are a bit worried about it. I followed the instructions i was given, run for 10mins on normal, run with back window heater on for another 10mins, then stuck the aircon on for another 10mins.

First time it did it it conked out about 6 mins in, fired it back up and carried on.

Main problem i seem to be getting is that it seems to be idling way too high (for the run in) at 1800rpm. Its getting everything very warm. The water temp is staying around 90-100 deg.

I took battery off for 30mins and tried again. Same thing ! I took it out and felt not too bad, but it wouldn\'t idle below 1500 rpm.

I\'ve just unplugged the battery again and letting it cool down for an hour before trying again.

Can anybody please help me and tell me where im going wrong, or even if i am. Do i run the aircon and the rear window at the same time or just the air con.

How do i reset it to get it to go through the process again ?? How long do i have to remove the battery for?

Cheers for any info.

Oh and when i take it out the heater lamp is always lit even when the water temp was 85 deg ! Is this normal ???

Should i have the Power Fc Commander plugged in when i do the initial setup, or am i going wrong there ?

Right i\'ve tried again and have no real luck, take it through the initial bit and all it does is set my idle to 1800 rpm. Is there anywhere i can check which year rx7 it is off the serial number. I\'ve just checked and i have ordered the correct one from takakari, but need to check they have sent the right one. I ordered the 91.12-96.1 one off them and the serial number is PFC FD3S4 020-2051 on the side of the power fc itself.

Sorry my rx7 is a 93-94 type R2 with no mods bar exhaust and airfilter, and rebuild from pip.

Come on guys, please can someone help me, im ripping my hair out here (and i haven\'t got that much already).

I\'ll give pip a ring tommorrow and see what he says, may be something simple (hopefully).

Just was wondering what the hell would cause it to do that if all the pfc stuff is ok and right spec.

Im not a happy bunny at the min...............

dunno about the serial number on the pfc itself but mine is a 414-Z004 (it says on the side of the box). Mine\'s installed on a \'92 import R1.

If the heater lamp is on, do you have a duff sensor?
You can check by going to etc/Sensor SW check on the commander. Any dodgy sensors will be highlighted with a black background. Sorry I can\'t help further

Hi Sean,

The instructions say that if the engine check lamp illuminates after installation then one of the following is not working:
pressure sensor
intake temp sensor,
throttle position sensor,
water temperature sensor.

You run the engine with no accessories for 10 mins then switch on heated rear window. After 10 mins switch of heated window and switch on air con., wait another 10 mins. This should complete the PFC learing cycle. During this period the idle will be erratic. If your coolong fans are working there shouldn\'t be a problem with temperature.
The commander won\'t make any difference.

The instructions go on to say that if the check lamp comes on when you start up them there is a proble with one of the above sensors and you should switch off straight away.

I think you have a problem with one of the above and I would remove the PFC until you have the car checked out and all sensors are working.

Best I can do mate, maybe somebody else can help you more.

Regards
Phil

You may have a point with the sensors, i\'ll have a look, but there is a rpm reading on the commander. The main problem is that takakari has removed the bar code and product number off the side of the box, making it hard to check if its the correct one.

I may need to take the dash off, because i know i cut a wire when i fit the speedo convertor to patch in the limiter removal, but i changed units and the new one didn\'t have the same cables, it could be that !

Cheers, i\'ll go switch it on and see what sensors aren\'t showing up on the misc screen on the commander !

Sorry if this sounds dense, but is the heat indicator also the engine check light (i know i should know). When i turn it on without the imboliser switched off so the power fc lights up in the sensor swich check i get the following:

STR:0
A/C:0
PWS:0
NTR: Å"
CLT:0
STP:0
CAT:0
ELD:0
HWL:Å"
FPD:0
FPR:0
APR:0
PAC:Å"
CCN:Å"
TCN:0
PRC:0

All the sensors on the left show voltages.

This is without the engine turning over.

Just looking at a photo i tried to take and VTA1 is highlighted, so it may be that what is causing the problem....... its showing about 0.2v on the reading.

So the big question is how much is the throttle sensor to change ???

Not been a good day !

To adjust VTA1. Loosen throttle position sensor and adjust until vta1 and vta2 are within spec.

Cheers, the next big question is where are they located in the engine bay and how do i adjust them ???

As Dragon said you need to adjust TPS back into spec. it may not be faulty check here  http://www.rx7.org/Robinette/tps_adj.htm to help you.  Disconnecting the battery does not reset the PFC. There is an option on the commander menu under ETC option which will set the PFC back to factory fresh ( this will also reset any options you may have changed).

Also after setting your TPS I would advise you to pull the electrical plug on the idle control valve and set you hard idle to as close to a constant 750 as you can get (dont forget to reconect pug afterwards). This has given me a good steady idle since after the PFC had been through its learning curve.

Good luck

If you have no luck go and see Pip, only down the road from you Shaun.:)

That is a good point, it was going to get booked in to get the apexi tuned to the car but i wanted to get the idle setup and the unit in the car before i took it to pip. I\'m going to ring him and find out what i should do.

Shaun,
When i installed my PFC a month ago, the idle was all over the place (wouldn\'t stop surging).  What i did was wind the idle speed screw in (located under the plastic intake elbow) to just about close it.  Reset PFC and started again.  Idle is rock-solid now.

Also check clutch switch, the dot on the commander should go on/off as you operate the clutch.  If broken, i mended mine with a ballpoint pen spring!

Let us know

Jon

Cheers Guys, just been adjusting my Throttle Position Sensor and re-done the process again (lost count) and it seems to be working ok. Ticking over at 800 rpm (not too bothered about 50rpm at the min). Nice and solid and the sensor is showing 0.47 on VT1 and 1.1 on VT2 and is all in the green. I\'ll keep an eye on the voltage to see if the sensor is slipping and then it should be fine. I\'ll take it out in a bit to see what its running like. At least there are no errors flaring up, so hopefully all is well :)

Cheers for all the great help, much appriciated. Shows just how good this club is (extremely good !!!)
